ABSORPTION OF EUROPEAN FUNDS IN MUNICIPALITIES OF THE ŚWIĘTOKRZYSKIE VOIVODESHIP

Summary/Abstract: Purpuse - Central places play a significant role in theories related to regional development, as they not only concentrate the most important functions of the region but also possess the necessary resources to stimulate economic growth. Therefore, the paper focuses on the importance of the central place in the absorption of European funds. The main objective of the paper was to analyze the absorption of European funds in the communes of the świętokrzyskie province. The main research question was: "Did the distance from the regional central place had an impact on the absorption of European funds in a given municipality?" Methodology - The theoretical part of the paper uses a literature review of regional development theory. In the practical part, the following statistical methods were used to analyze the data collected in the Local Data Bank: location measures (average and quartiles,), variability measures (standard deviation, coefficient of variation, dispersion). Findings - In the 2014-2017 period, the distance from the main regional center had an impact on the absorption of European funds mainly in municipalities that were in close geographical proximity. The research results for the 2014-2020 period illustrate the dispersion of European funds in municipalities and do not confirm the dependence of European funds absorption on the distance of the municipality from the regional central place. Therefore, it can be concluded that, according to the development theories that were presented in the article, there was a saturation effect of close area.
