Summary/Abstract: The year 1924 knew two overthrows by violence of the powers in Albania in a very short period of time, in June and December 1924. This complicated to a great degree the situation of the recognition of these governments in Albania and reopened for discussion the Albanian question in the European chancelleries. This article on the basis of British archival sources aims at presenting the sight of the British diplomacy of these events. After the pact of Friendship and Reciprocal Collaboration of 27 January of the year 1924 between Italy and the Serbo-Croatian-Slovenian Kingdom, England was very interested in preserving the equilibrium established in the Adriatic, which imposed even an equilibrium in the region of the Balkans. In this framework, the consolidation and stability of the Albanian state, because of its geographical position and the political and economic weakness was very important. Foreign Office (further F.O. - P.D.) was convinced that this stability in Albania could be achieved only by a leader of “strong hand”. For F.O. very appropriate for this position seemed to be the figure of A. Zogu. This sympathy remained permanent in the relations of Zogu with the British representative in Durres, Eyres, who continually furnished the centre with his opinions in favour of this created confidence. When took place the events of June 1924 and the power was transferred by violence in the hands of the democrats of Noli, Eyres desillusioned by the fall of the government went away to London and proposed to the centre to pass the Albanian question to the League of Nations. F.O. reacted against this proposition, because it was unknown if Albania represented any interest for the League of Nations to take this responsibility, and, secondly, the League of Nation would pass to Italy the political mandate on Albania according to the Decision of November 9, 1921 of the Conference of the Ambassadors (...)
