A NEW TECHNIQUE FOR THE VALORISATION OF A TERRA SIGILLATA VESSEL WITH RELIEF DECORATION DISCOVERED AT ALBA IULIA

Summary/Abstract: The present article aims to present a technique applied in restoring the shape of a terra sigillata vessel with relief decoration identified following the processing of all the ceramic material recently discovered in the eastern part of the town of Alba Iulia. From the contents of a household pit within the Cx. 12 complex, a rich ceramic material was found, very diversified in terms of the quality of the paste (fine, semi-fine, coarse) and the shape of the vessels. After the processing of the ceramic material, a single complete vessel was noted in our laboratory. This is part of the category of fine luxury terra sigillata ceramics of local provenance in a poor state of preservation in terms of engobe quality. The weak adhesion of the engobe, but also the ornamental motifs represented by semi-ovals with three corners characteristic of the centre of Cristești, give us the right to believe that our vessel is a local product. In order to develop the most suitable method of completing the shape of the vessel, we also took into account the quality and adhesion of the engobe to the ceramic support. In this case, we chose the method of the inner impression on plasticine moulding and obtaining a perfect profile, restoring the decorative elements by hand carving in plaster according to the model from the original area.
