Summary/Abstract: The definitions of the Francophony vary according to eras, territories, countries or regions, socio-economic contexts, to personal feelings too.It can be understood from the outside, as a simple object of study, or from the inside through personal experiences.Beyond any theory, concrete examples and numbers, it offers, next to the French language, a complementary chance;a significant chance in personal fulfillment and a starting point towards the understanding of foreign people and countries, of the other, of oneself among so many foreigners. We have brought together in our article key concepts, moments, symbols and famous names of the Francophony. Apart from general information, the in-depth study of the Francophony teaches us how to understand a phenomenon in its evolution, as well as to make a difference. It is necessary to distinguish between countries where French is the official language (unique or not), those where French is the mother tongue of a large part of the population, those where it is a language of culture, those where it is used by certain social classes. In some countries, for example, although it is an official language, French is not the mother tongue of the population, nor the one commonly used. The language criterion does not always correspond to the nationality criterion.Francophony also teaches us what all passionate and educated Francophones have in common: the love for the French language and for France, the desire to reach an advanced level of linguistic competence, to become a Francophile, to become aware of the best valuestransmitted by this organization, the openness towards relational with French people and with inhabitants of other French-speaking countries by virtue of common goals and feelings; and last but not the least the willingnessof putting to good use all the qualities and skills acquired throughout our francophone evolution as French-speaking persons.
