Summary/Abstract: The conversion to Islam of the eldest son of Petru Rareş has been studied thoroughly by the Romanian historiography but there are still a few unsettled issues concerning the aims and the consequences on this extreme choice. The present paper discusses a number of six contemporary accounts, written in July-August 1551 by the Venetian bailo in Constantinople, Bernardo Navagero. These new pieces of information bring new insights on the apostasy of Iliaş Rareş. Navagero’s avvisi discuss the chronology of events, the reasons which pushed the prince to become Muslim, the reaction of his Moldavian subjects and the subsequent hesitation of Iliaş Rareş to pursue his intentions and, finally, the intervention of grand vizier who compelled the prince to fulfill his promises. The same documents give some evidence about the situation in Moldavia after the abjuration of Iliaş Rareş and on the political state of affairs of the principality in an age dominated by the confrontation between the Habsburgs and the Ottoman Empire.
