Summary/Abstract: The article presents an overview of tools for monitoring early mother–infant interactions in a free-play situation through video recording. The quality of early interactions is essential to child development, making observations on mother–child relationships a method for detecting early disturbances in interaction. This review of tools used in Europe and North America is intended for researchers and professionals working directly with both infants and their parents, and who are involved in early childhood development research programmes. The aim is to review the existing tools for early monitoring of mother–infant interactions, from birth to the third year, in a videotaped free-play situation.
