Summary/Abstract: The article examines some characteristic features of standard spoken Bulgarian in comparison with other oral formations that are used in non-regulated spheres of communication – colloquial speech, in particular. A description of the different repre-sentations of spoken Bulgarian is offered, along with a definition of the scope of the con¬cept of ‘pronunciation norms’. The differences between pronunciation and spelling norms are discussed with a view to the codification of the rules of spoken Bulgarian. The author summarises the conditions, factors and challenges with respect to the codification of standard spoken Bulgarian, revealing the peculiarities of the oral and written forms of the language and the relationship between them and the way these characteristics relate to language codification.
