Summary/Abstract: Karel Antonin Macháň (1867–unknown) was a Czech musician, theorist and composer. He came to Bulgaria in 1891 and worked as a music teacher in pedagogical schools. There is evidence that he composed an opera titled Khoro (Round dance) after a text by Kiril Hristov (c. 1901), but the score was not preserved. While looking for new information, I came across a letter to Hristov, kept in the Central State Archive. It was written in Moscow, dated 1935 and signed “G. А. Macháň”. And yet, Macháň’s authorship is almost indisputable – the letter speaks of Dobri Hristov and the opera Khoro. But, also, about Soviet power and the successes of Soviet music education! This has determined the aim of this paper – to present the contents of the letter and, in parallel, to comment on the links between art and society.
