(The Echoes of the) Muted Mimesis

Summary/Abstract: The following essay attempts to provide a critical overview on the protocol of renowned French philosopher Alain Badiou’s re-reading and re-writing of Plato’s allegory of the cave. It focuses on the close textual analysis of the allegory provided during the seminar Pour aujourd’hui : Platon ! (2009), but also ventures to speculate on some of the more salient features of Badiou’s militant philosophy (such as Truth, the event, the process of subjectivation, the theory of double separation, engagement, fidelity). The main issue is evidently the way the actualization of the Platonic heritage unfolds; but the specific concern is a certain unacknowledged Christian overdetermination of Badiou’s reading of the (neo-)platonist concept of anabasis (in Badiou’s lexis: conversion) on the one hand, and the more general relation between „anti-representational” critical philosophy (alongside Badiou, with particular respect to Guy Debord) and religiosity and philosophical education on the other.
