Summary/Abstract: The article is based on documents (chiefly inheritance minutes), contained in a register of the Sofia Şeriat Court in the 70s of the 17th c. The author follows the comparative approach customary for studies of this sort which includes comparing the data on the two sexes, comparison on a confessional basis and, insofar as possible, comparison with the synchronous materials on the position of women in other regions of the Ottoman Empire. The analysis of the empirical material has resulted in two principal conclusions. First, a typically feminine nonhazardous model of economic behaviour is outlined, expressed in preference for quickly liquid forms of ownership, a minimum interest in farm property and commercial-artisan assets, modest participation in credit operation, etc. Second, the impression prevails of a relatively low degree of social mobility among the women of the Roumelian capital, a conclusion which is valid both for the representatives of the provincial elite and for newly Mohammedanized persons, including emancipated women slaves.
