ALBANIAN LANGUAGE PARADIGM IN THE WORKS OF DRITËRO AGOLLI

Summary/Abstract: Dritëro Agolli is one of the most prominent personalities in our contemporary national culture. His work carries many values and meaningful messages. His place in this culture can be very well understood when one looks at Agolli’s relationship with Albanian language. This relationship is evident in two major planes: First, he focused on issues, phenomena and problems that are directly related to our mother tongue, especially on issues of the unified Albanian literary language (otherwise called the standard language); Secondly, his work reveals his uninterrupted work for the literary and artistic elaboration of the mother language and for its refinement and syntactic dexterity, for the purification and enrichment, especially with the ethos of the language of the people. He knew the power and the magic of the word, so he fought and worked to increase its values and claimed that "the word carves the stone". The contributions he made with his language crafting in all of his work are an added value in the raising of the national and the international prestige of Albanian. Dritëro Agolli has addressed in his writings the inseparable connection between language and people, the concept that language is created by the people and not individuals, no matter how prominent they are, even if they work with language and for language. He emphasizes that people are the spring and the source of language, people are its creator. People are omnipotent in language. He is known as the writer directly related to the language of the people, who skillfully raised this language in art. He is spontaneous in the use of linguistic means, forms, spaces and the endless possibilities of expression that language offers. D. Agolli admits that the writer creates wonders with language; in his view, language is a gold mine. The writer identifies himself and his work through language, so he must know his mother tongue well and use it skillfully. He also knows the pressure that other languages have exerted on Albanian, knows the ways, the means, and the possibilities of countless inflows of infiltrations in the language, especially unnecessary ones, and has been concerned about its purity. D. Agolli was a participant in the Orthography Congress (Tirana, 1972) and a signatory of the Resolution of this congress. He remained until the end of his life a fighter dedicated to the spread of the unified Albanian literary language (now known as standard Albanian), a strong and coldblooded defender and an enlightened laureate of it. But he was a defender of dialectical linguistic richness and was not against the creations and publications in dialect forms, appreciating publications that bring forth content, artistic and linguistic value.. He was deeply concerned about the decline of the language culture today and criticized the disregard of the state, society and the individual for the linguistic culture of expression. D. Agolli is for the increase and the expansion of the popular character of the standard, in order for it to be as close as possible to the way people speak. The writer must trace, record lexical items and popular syntactic constructions and incorporate them into his work by elevating them to art with the skills, mastery and the culture of writing. He knows closely the strength, the conatational, denotational and expressive values values and, among others, the artistic function of the Albanian word, especially that of the language of the people. He notes that often this word is not appreciated, even despised. He was a writer and a citizen concerned about everything related to the nation, and closely followed the literary creativity of Kosovar authors and beyond. His literary creativity, quite rich in genres and types, enables an approach for linguistic values. The writer's works are artistically realized and easily receptive. This, among other things, comes as a result of his highly-achieved linguistic form. Thus, Dritëro Agolli highly valued language and returned to school to use and hone language skills.
