Summary/Abstract: In the early twentieth century, intellectuals and politicians in Central Europe used racial and social Darwinian metaphors to support the idea of national superiority. This succeeded in transforming the idea of the nation, previously defined as a political community based exclusively on language, into a biological community that differs from other nations by different racial origins. In Transylvania, these ideas served two opposing principles: the Hungarian idea of national superiority and the Romanian argument for national self-determination and independence.
