Summary/Abstract: The Yugoslav government attempts to annex Trieste immediately after World War II, or at least to obtain its special status, clashed with the military-political interests of the Great Powers. The importance of Trieste, first as an allied logistics base in the final battles of the World War II, and then as a port on the border of the communist and capitalist systems, influenced the determination of - priorities in the conduct of Yugoslav foreign policy. Attempts by Yugoslav representatives to achieve the annexation of the Julian Region to Yugoslavia during the Paris Peace Conference failed due to opposition from Western powers. At the Peace Conference, Yugoslav representatives sought to make Trieste economically connected to Yugoslavia. They were ready to agree to the international statute of Trieste as a free city, but with its borders being reduced to the area of Trieste and its immediate surroundings. After the Paris Peace Conference, the Free Territory of Trieste was formed, which represented an independent state entity under the protectorate of the United Nations Security Council and which was formally enabled to participate in international relations and pursue an independent foreign policy. The period after the formation of the free territory of Trieste marks the beginning of a new phase in the Yugoslav government's diplomatic struggle to resolve the Trieste crisis. After the failure of Yugoslav policy at the Peace Conference, the Yugoslav government sought to elect a governor of the Free Territory of Trieste who would best suit Yugoslav interests. Due to the impossibility of reaching an agreement between Yugoslavia and Italy on the election of a joint governor, the stay of Yugoslav and Anglo-American troops in the Julian Region was extended until the final solution of the Trieste crisis on 5 October 1954.
