Summary/Abstract: The Covid-19 pandemic has intensively magnified many social problems. It is the cause of, and the acceleration of a processes of transformation, which are especially related to the world of work and work relations. The present article shows these aspects in reference to the “social dividing line of gender” and points out that in insecure working con-ditions it is women who are especially afflicted by the social consequences of the pandemic. The viewpoint, (and still one that is lacking) of recognition of work carried out in the care profession now deepens and the question raised is what should be understood under the con-cept of professions as “relevant for the system”. Finally, the author refers to the discussion raised by Pope Francis namely the theme of basic income as a possible means of easing the negative consequences of the pandemic and the financial appreciation of tasks that are “rel-evant for the system” and which are not so far rewarded. In conclusion - and in reference to Pope Francis - the author reflects over the question, how social ties can be strengthened and which changes are in this regard necessary.
