Summary/Abstract: Specialized discourses and vocabularies are micro universes of different professionals. Having access to their meanings is not always easy. In approaching this topic, we have taken into consideration the situation where a translator, after having acquired the advanced level of linguistic competence, a general culture and the ability to manage research and information, decides to focus on a (few) specialization(s). Personal development in specialized fields is generally ensured by the national and international academic systems - Master's and PhD level. However, we bring here into discussion the status of an independent learner in search for his own study path. We have explained in this article how specialized knowledge can be acquired by going through the following three steps: 1. The acquisition of general knowledge of the targeted professional field(s). 2. The study of the different types of discourse built around metalanguages. 3. The study of specialty terminology(ies). Although these stages might be used for the study of any professional field, we have given here the example of impressionist painting.
