Syria – nowy plan pokojowy i jego szanse na sukces

This article explores the concept of peace, the conditions necessary for its effective and sustainable implementation, and outlines the latest peace plan for Syria adopted by the United Nations Security Council in December 2015. It indicates that the success of the peace process can be ensured by the participation of civil society, especially women. Recent research increasingly emphasizes the importance of women in the peace-building process. In addition, the sustainability of the peace agreement can be ensured by sentencing those responsible for the most serious international crimes and investing in the construction of efficient democratic institutions that will prevent the collapse of the state.

Aktorzy na scenie politycznej Japonii a kwestie pamięci o II wojnie światowej w relacjach ze Stanami Zjednoczonymi

The purpose of this article is to describe certain political actors in Japan and their attitudes to monuments, memorials and commemoration of the events of World War II in the country’s remembrance policy. Firstly, the author tries to answer the question of how monuments and physical places of remembrance in the region of the Pacific Ocean, referring to the conflict between Japan and the United States during the war, influence the creation of relationships between these countries and the attitudes of leading politicians towards the events of World War II. Secondly, this article attempts to determine which political actors in Japan decide on the creation of memorials associated with Japanese-American relations. The article provides an analysis of the speeches of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and politicians who have spoken about commemorative sites in parliament, as well as existing sources, such as statements issued by individual institutions.

Utopia modernizacji surowcowej na przykładzie Federacji Rosyjskiej w okresie 2000-2008

This article presents the state of research into a particular type of states called petrostates, including the Russian Federation during the rule of President Putin. Countries whose economy is based on raw materials face a number of problems called the “curse of mineral resources”, which significantly hinder modernization processes. Petrostates are characterized by conservative structures at the levels of the elite, the bureaucracy and interest groups which only look for gains from resource rent. Russia is no exception with its very limited capacity of modernization rooted in the industrial age, which when combined with the system limits of the Russian economy makes all top-down modernization plans unrealistic. Ideas of rebuilding Russia’s position as a superpower based on raw materials, which are manifested in the concept of an energy superpower, must therefore be regarded as imitations of modernization – the Russian version of a petrostate.

Błędy interferencji zewnętrznej w interjęzyku ucznia

A linguistic error is one of the most fundamental problems of modern language teaching. Causes of errors are complex and result from different factors. Insufficient language competence triggers the mechanism of interference, involving the transfer of habits acquired in a native language to a foreign language. The aim of the publication is to highlight the diversity of linguistic errors resulting from crosslinguistic influence in a learner’s interlanguage system. The research material consists of written tasks performed in English by 116 students of secondary schools in Bialystok. The analysis of the errors excerpted from the corpus led to the classification of interlingual interference errors of lexical and grammatical categories along with linguistic commentary. The application of the research results in teaching practice can help teachers understand the nature of errors and take appropriate methodological decisions concerning prevention and treatment procedures.

Updating the school: neurodidactics in foreign language teaching

Neurodidactics or brain-based learning, a relatively new interdisciplinary science, constitutes an interface between didactics, neuroscience, pedagogy and psychology. Based on the latest findings of brain research, it provides principles and suggestions for effective brain-based learning and teaching. This paper entitled “Updating the school: neurodidactics in foreign language teaching” describes the principles of neurodidactics or brain-based learning with reference to foreign language teaching. It presents the basics of neurodidactics and brain-based teaching and the way it affects learning and memory. With this in mind, some brain-based ideas and approaches for the foreign language classroom are explained which may help to find a better and more effective way of foreign language learning and teaching.

The author notices that insufficient mastering the foreign language vocabulary may remarkably impede the communication process. Thus, it is important to form proper lexical habits based on methodical enriching the lexicon and the grammatical rules. This positively influences the communication improvement – both oral and written. The article presents the analysis of psycholinguistic regularities that influence the proper vocabulary acquisition, with the special attention paid to the memorising processes and the rules of proper memorising, as their knowledge is crucial for planning the work on enriching the lexicon and creating exercises on learning new vocabulary.

Sposoby wyrażenia praesens i futurum w Kronice Supraskiej

The article focuses on the analysis of forms of praesens and futurum perfect and imperfect excerpted from the Supraśl Chronicle, which belongs to the first Belorussian-Lithuanian compilation. In the examined text the forms of present and future I tenses are frequently observed. However, not a single form of futurum imperfect of type II has been found. The forms of third person singular futurum perfect are used as praesens historicum.

The following article relates to practising the didactics of multilingualism in teaching German as the second foreign language after English as the first foreign language. In the theoretic part an attempt was made to define a concept of multilingualism and to present the psycholinguistic background of the didactics of multilingualism. In addition, the tenets of the DaFnE concept that pertains to the above language constellation were presented. The practical part refers to an empirical study that was conducted among teachers of German in the area of Trójmiasto. The aim of the study was to investigate if and in which fields teachers of German practise the didactics of multilingualism using their knowledge of English, as well as their pupils’ command of this language.

O tutoringu akademickim, czyli o nowej formie nauczania francuskiego jako trzeciego języka obcego w ramach lektoratu języka nowożytnego

This article is the description of a project implemented at the University of Gdańsk aimed at individualised work of a tutor with selected students attending a foreign (French) language course within the study of Applied Linguistics. The project had two basic objectives: to introduce information about culture and literature (basic knowledge of culture and literature of French-speaking countries) and to teach language (to improve French language skills as the third language). Both targets were fulfilled within a cycle of one-to-one meetings (tutorials). During such meetings, custom-made forms of work were applied, including: reading selected fragments of critical literary studies in Polish and French (a preliminary work of a student conducted individually before every tutorial), elements of an academic lecture (the characteristics of selected epochs and cultural and literary phenomena discussed during tutorials) and the shared analysis of selected fragments of French literary texts, being the grounds for the deeper reflection on selected grammar and lexical issues. The summary of every tutorial was a discussion on literary problems mentioned during the meeting (a literary epoch, literary currents, authors, works, similarities to literary phenomena observed within other great European literatures) and varied grammatical and lexical exercises that referred to the covered material. An additional element that reinforced the gained knowledge was homework that involved writing short texts in French that concerned the analysed literary works and the presented grammatical and lexical content. The preliminary results of the project implementation weigh in favour of its continuation.

Odniesienia kulturowe w nauczaniu języka obcego w grupie wielokulturowej – pułapki i wyzwania

The aim of the article is a more detailed analysis of the intense intercultural communication during foreign language classes. This type of communication is based both on the information contained in the mother tongue language system of each student as well on the cultural level, ie. when cultural patterns are translated. The ability to use a new language code are associated with socio-linguistic competence, without which one cannot really use a foreign language in order to produce correct messages and expressions in different socio-linguistic contexts. A clear awareness of own culture and cultural identity is the key to develop the theory of intercultural communication. A person communicating in a language other than his/her mother tongue, changes not only the linguistic system, but a whole framework for cultural references (as well as the personality), which confirms the need to understand another culture in order to achieve full communicative competence in a foreign language. In the article selected issues of interculturalism are reminded (and their implementation, eg. the lack of pragmatic equivalence) and practical examples of difficulties which may arise in the classroom while teaching in a multicultural group are given. Understanding the processes taking place in the classroom is possible with the help of the tools used in lincuoculturology and during linguistic comparison.

Angielskie ekwiwalenty terminów „pełnomocnictwo rodzajowe” oraz „pełnomocnictwo szczególne”

This paper constitutes an attempt to assess English equivalents of the Polish terms “pełnomocnictwo rodzajowe” and “pełnomocnictwo szczególne” suggested in four most popular bilingual specialist dictionaries. The English equivalents discussed include: “special proxy”, “special authority” and “special power”. In order to conduct a thorough assessment of the suggested equivalents, the definitions of the Polish terms and their English equivalents presented in English monolingual legal dictionaries have been analysed. Moreover, the study aims to verify whether or not the suggested equivalents occur in the texts of the British sources of law. Finally, translation techniques applied while forming English equivalents under discussion are identified.

Od zajęć tradycyjnych do MOOCów – role nauczyciela języków obcych

Intensive teacher support is the major factor in e-learning being an effective learning and teaching environment. Different teacher’s roles are associated with the specific nature of the online educational process, which results from the adopted educational paradigm, instructive or constructivist, the number of participants, the course structure together with its resources and activities, as well as the subject matter of the e-learning programme or module. The teacher responsible for developing and supervising a massive open online course has to perform more varied activities and tasks than that working with small groups participating in an e-learning or blended learning programme. In the first case their work involves mainly pre-emptive support, in the second one both pre-emptive and many-layered responsive. Therefore their duties may include helping students solve not only their academic problems, but also non-academic ones. The paper shows how teacher support impacts the effectiveness of teaching and learning English during e-learning courses and modules for groups of a limited and unlimited number of participants.

O zastosowaniu tłumaczenia avista w dydaktyce języków obcych

Advancing globalisation, informatization and integration result in changing expectations of employers. People who aptly switch between at least one foreign language and their mother tongue as well as trained translators/interpreters are higly sought-after. Perception of translation is undergoing a change, too. It is becoming an increasingly attractive component of study programmes. Sight translation is an oral rendition of a written text, usually done instantaneously. Sight translation combines features of translation and interpretation. Thus, it can be an effective method to develop not only translation but also general linguistic competence. Consequently, the ability to perform sight translation can respond to the needs of current students, universities and job market. The aim of this paper is to present opinions on application of sight translation in teaching as well as to share information collected in an interview and a questionnaire among academic teachers of translation/interpretation and teachers of practical foreign language classes.

Z wpływów międzyjęzykowych u osób wielojęzycznych

The recently changing socio-economic and political European reality largely influenced the intensification of economic, technological and scientific exchange between European countries, among which there is also Poland. New migration opportunities of societies for earning and tourism purposes and the new language policy entailed changes in the linguistic model of a contemporary European. The modern European is a person not only bilingual, but fluent in several languages other than their own. As the statistics show, monolingual people are a minority in today’s world, and the phenomenon of multilingualism is widely regarded as the norm. Polish pupils on the first and second stage of education and Polish students, in line with the trend of language education, also have to study foreign languages, becoming part of a linguistic model of a contemporary European. In the mind of bi- / multilingual speakers in the process of acquiring the target language there occur interactions between non-target languages, affecting the efficiency of the process of acquiring the target language. The article is an attempt to classify and describe interlingual influences taking place in the mind of the students of Slavic studies at KUL – students of Russian studies with Polish being their native language, using and acquiring a new foreign language or languages (L2 - Russian, L3 – Ukrainian).

Umiejętność pracy nauczyciela języków obcych z tekstem i na tekście podstawą kształcenia kompetencji komunikacyjnej uczestników procesu dydaktycznego

The article “Teacher’s preparation to work with texts, as the basis for the development of communication competence for the participants of the didactic process” is an attempt to analyse didactic skills of a teacher working with a chosen text with the aim of developing particular language skills that facilitate participation in oral and written communication. The basis for the consideration are: Jakobson’s communication models as well as Grucza’s language education model that show interdependence of sender-teacher message-pattern of an utterance with its recipient – a student who must learn the pattern – and thus they entail combining them in one framework illustrating the process of communication competence education during Polish or foreign language classes. In the article there are provided various types of texts used at different educational levels as statement patterns for students, as well as methods, strategies and techniques of working on a text and an example of working with a text i.e. a sequence of exercises allowing for language production. All the presented teacher’s activities boil down to the conclusion that effective communication competence teaching to learners is possible only when s/he has got the knowledge and educational, didactic and methodical skills thanks to which s/he can properly plan and lead the teaching process of oral and written communication that is the main goal of language education.

Putin (2000, 2004, 2012). The author presents ways of realisation of this concept: direct (usage of noun „President”, pronoun „I”, word combination „head of state”) and indirect (creating in speaches the image of strong leader who is able to to stand at the head of the state).
