Author(s): Maxime Rodinson,Abdullah Aydınlı / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 12/2005

Author(s): H. Ahmet Özdemir / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 11/2005

The Mongol invasion can be considered as one of the most interesting events in general World history, particularly in Islamic history. As a result of it, almost all Turkish Muslims living in Central Asia had to move to Anatolia, where they had established the Ottoman Empire. The relation of Mongols with the Ottoman Turks had been based on the enmity. However, in the years before the World War I, due to the spread of the West currents among the Ottoman intelligentsia, there appeared some studies dealing with the relationship between the Turks and the Mongols, and the resemblance of these two nations in linguistics and cultural area. Some Muslim historians, disappointed from most of these studies, and in turn they also published some articles about this matter. Taheer al-Mawlawi, in particular, issued a series of article entitled as “to the Muslim soldier”. In these articles, he gathered most of the accounts that had been recorded by Muslim historians, and he also cited the Mongol cruelty and collected them under the title “Cengiz ve Hülâgû Mezalimi” (The cruelties of Genghis and Hulagu), [1906, Istanbul]. His work is regarded as a good concise work on Mongol invasion, in particular against the Islamic World.

For Aquinas ethics has two principal topics: first, what is the ultimate goal of human being, and second, how that goal is to be achieved. The aim of this study is to present Aquinas’ understanding of happiness in general. For this reason it will discuss the following questions: What is the ultimate goal of human being? What constitutes man’s happiness? What is happiness? What are the things required for happiness? Whether happiness can be attained? The article concludes that Aquinas tries to harmonize Aristotelian ethics with Christianity, and in doing so he adds new dimensions to the Aristotelian ethics.

Author(s): Ahmet Hakkı Turabi / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 11/2005

Ibn al-Munajjim lived in Abbasid Era in which music became a branch of science in Islamic Civilization. He wrote two valuable books on the theories of music. He came from “Müneccimoğulları family” known by its affinity to palace, and he was also an authority in Arabic-Persian sciences. His teacher Ishāq al-Mawsılī was considered as the founder of the theories of music in Islamic world; but his Works didn’t reach us. And this increased the value of al-Munajjim’s work, because his Risāla fi’l-Mūsīqā gives detailed and important informations about the theories of music of that period. In researches on history of music done in western and Arab world Ibn al-Munajjim’s Risāla was mistakenly mixed up by his work Kitābu’n-Nagam. In this study we tried to connect this misunderstanding and we examined Ibn al-Munajjim’s –and consequently his teacher Ishaq’s- theories of music. We also tried to give some informations about the life of Ibn al-Munajjim.

HALÎL B. AHMED’İN KİTÂBÜ’L-AYN ADLI ESERİNDE YER ALAN TIBBÎ TERİMLER IŞIĞINDA ERKEN DÖNEM İSLÂM TIP TARİHİNE YENİDEN BİR BAKIŞ

Author(s): Levent ÖZTÜRK / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 10/2004

Apparently, our knowledge about the development of the Early Islamic Medicine is not sufficient considering the current knowledge. Since researches on that period are inadequate and writing documents does not carry on until today completely. Some documents regarding medicine are translated to Arabic since Umayyad period, under the reign of Mervan b. el-Hakem (64-65/684-685) and these efforts continue until the reign of Memun, who was Abbasid caliphate. However, contents of these translations are not so clear. Khalil b. Ahmad (d. 175/791), who lived in the end of the Umayyad period and in the beginning of the Abbasid period, was very prominent philologist. He has Kitâbü’lAyn that is very early study on the Arabic Literature. In this work, Khalil b. Ahmad, explained over hundred words regarding the medicine, and sometimes investigates etymologic roots of these words and from where they came. His explanations on these words and information, which he presented, reflect medical culture of that time. This essay will analyze medical terms given by Khalil b. Ahmad and meanwhile emphasize the important points from the point of history of medicine.
