Zatočenici zla: zaveštanje Hane Arent

Author(s): / Language(s): Serbian

Hannah Arendt was one of the foremost political thinkers of the twentieth century. This collection examines the themes of her multi-faceted work, from her theory of totalitarianism, revolution as a ‘new beginning’, conception of freedom, responsibility, guilty, and her controversial idea of the ‘banality of evil’. Each chapter examines the political, philosophical, and historical concerns which shaped Arendt’s thought, and which promoted her to become one of the most unapologetic champions of the modern political life in the Western traditions.

SOCJALIZM

Author(s): Jerzy Kochan / Language(s): Polish

Zawiera systematyczny wykład tych zagadnień z pozycji materializmu historycznego i w ramach szeroko rozumianej tradycji, odwołującej się do Kapitału Karola Marksa i Manifestu komunistycznego. W tym też znaczeniu jest próbą przybliżenia współczesnemu czytelnikowi tej tradycji, a jednocześnie realizacją zadania jej aktualizacji, a nawet eksperymentalnego, i czasem ryzykownego, wykorzystania do analizy różnych zagadnień postmodernistycznej rzeczywistości, swoistego matriksa dwudziestego pierwszego wieku.

Aristotelovanje

Author(s): / Language(s): Bosnian

Miodrag Živanović (Filozofski fakultet Univerziteta u Banjoj Luci), prof. dr. sc. Damir Marić (Filozofski fakultet Univerziteta u Sarajevu), prof. dr. sc. SpahijaKozlić (Pravni fakultet Univerziteta u Zenici), doc. dr. sc. Bernard Harbaš (Ekonomski fakultet Univerziteta u Zenici), prof. dr. sc. Nebojša Vasić (Filozofski fakultet Univerziteta u Zenici) i zenički književnik Aras Borić. Kako svjedoči Diogen Laertije, Aristotel (stgr. Ἀριστοτέλης, Aristotelēs; Stagira u Trakiji, 384. p. n. e.

Author(s): Tony R. Judt / Language(s): Serbian

Something is profoundly wrong with the way we think about how we should live today. In Ill Fares The Land, Tony Judt, one of our leading historians and thinkers, reveals how we have arrived at our present dangerously confused moment. Judt masterfully crystallizes what we've all been feeling into a way to think our way into, and thus out of, our great collective dis-ease about the current state of things. As the economic collapse of 2008 made clear, the social contract that defined postwar life in Europe and America“ the guarantee of a basal level of security, stability and fairness -- is no longer guaranteed; in fact, it’s no longer part of the common discourse. Judt offers the language we need to address our common needs, rejecting the nihilistic individualism of the far right and the debunked socialism of the past. To find a way forward, we must look to our not so distant past and to social democracy in action: to re-enshrining fairness over mere efficiency.Distinctly absent from our national dialogue, social democrats believe that the state can play an enhanced role in our lives without threatening our liberties. Instead of placing blind faith in the market—as we have to our detriment for the past thirty years social democrats entrust their fellow citizens and the state itself.Ill Fares the Land challenges us to confront our societal ills and to shoulder responsibility for the world we live in. For hope remains. In reintroducing alternatives to the status quo, Judt reinvigorates our political conversation, providing the tools necessary to imagine a new form of governance, a new way of life.

The Centrality of the Regime for Political Science

Author(s): Clifford Angell Bates Jr / Language(s): English

The book concentrates on the crucial Aristotelian concept of politeia, trying to show how its understanding has evolved for years, often towards fallacious interpretations. The text also points out how reconstruction of the original meaning of the concept can help in creating the frames for modern political science to avoid the traps of ethnocentrism and methodological reductionism that appear in most of today’s models used by the political science and by the theories of the political systems. In the last 20 years interest in Aristotle’s works has increased, resulting in reconsideration of their problems, especially of Aristotelian political thought. Many researchers offered redefinitions of politeia, but it is worth noticing that most of the previous analysis did not take into consideration central role of the concept and its constant liveliness, suggesting rather its archaic character and usefulness only from the historical point of view. Clifford Agnell Bates Jr proves the opposite: for him politeia is the universal concept that helps to understand the internal structure of modern political systems, their dynamics and mutual relationships.

Problem psychologii w filozofii pokantowskiej

Author(s): Andrzej J. Noras / Language(s): Polish

The subject of analyses undertaken in the book are concepts of the post-Kantian philosophers who, in their inquiries, referred to psychology, namely: Jakob Friedrich Fries, Friedrich Eduard Beneke, Johann Friedrich Herbart, Jürgen Bona Meyer, and Leonard Nelson. What is revealed in the course of the author’s investigations is the following. First of all, attempts to establish relationship between psychology and philosophy are not identicalwith the subsequent endeavours to found philosophy on a bedrock of psychology. Such an understanding of relations between the two has come to be known as psychologism, and does not refer to the concepts in question. Second of all, one cannot propose a single model of understanding the relation occurring between philosophy and psychology. As a source of the problem here one can indicate the interpretation of Kant’s thought put forward by Fries. The latter – to a lesser or greater degree – is referred to by the remaining thinkers. Thirdly, the author’s analyses demonstrate such a plethora of standpoints regarding the titular issue that the only common denominator may be broadly understood psychology.

More After More. Essays Commemorating the Five Hundredth Anniversary of Thomas More's Utopia

Author(s): / Language(s): English

The book "More Afer More. Essays Commemorating the Five-Hundredth Anniversary of Thomas More’s Utopia" is the first volume of Facta Ficta Research Centre’s in Kraków series "Frontiers of Nowhere", published in co-operation with Villa Decius Association as a part of the world-wide research initiative Utopia 500 to celebrate five hundred years since the publication of sir Thomas More’s De Optimo Reipublicæ Statu Deque Nova Insula Utopia Libellus Vere Aureus, Nec Minus Salutaris Quam Festivus in 1516. From the introduction by Gregory Claeys: The twenty-six essays which compose this collection cover a substantial range of both historical and theoretical themes, indicating at the least that the utopian idea thrives today across a number of disciplines as well as in domains (like computer games) which are themselves of recent origin and which indicate that utopia can also be addressed as an aspect of the internal psychic fantasy world. There is some consideration here of the lengthy and complex historical relationship between utopian ideals and religion. There is some effort to reconsider practical efforts to found actual communities which embody utopian ideals. Several authors revisit the emotional substrata of utopian aspiration rendered accessible through music in particular. Literature is here nonetheless the chief focus, in keeping with the form of Thomas More’s original text and that of the tradition which has imitated and satirised it. The themes represented here mirror in literary form the dystopian dri in the external world discussed above. Many of the leading authors of post-totalitarian dystopian fiction are included here, notably (to name but a few) Margaret Atwood, James Graham Ballard, Robert A. Heinlein, David Foster Wallace and, most recently, Michel Houellebecq. Within these treatments, the possibilities are explored that dystopia may emerge from or assume the form of racist regimes, environmental destruction, corporate dictatorship, or religious fundamentalism, or some combination of these factors. Such poten-tial outcomes of modernity need, the authors of this volume also assure us, to be balanced against the utopian promise which bodily remodelling entertains, and the possibility of longevity which scientific and technical advances enca-psulate as the epitome of modern individualist utopianism.

The origin and transformation of Language and Art

Author(s): Konstantinos Maritsas / Language(s): English

How did language begin? The question, then, is how the properties of human language got their start. Obviously, it couldn’t have been a bunch of cavemen sitting around and deciding to make up a language, since in order to do so, they would have had to have a language to start with! Intuitively, one might speculate that hominids (human ancestors) started by grunting or hooting or crying out, and “gradually” this “somehow” developed into the sort of language we have today. (Such speculations were so rampant 150 years ago that in 1866 the French Academy banned papers on the origins of language!) The problem is in the “gradually”' and the “somehow”. Chimps grunt and hoot and cry out, too. What happened to humans in the 6 million years or so since the hominid and chimpanzee lines diverged, and when and how did hominid communication begin to have the properties of modern language?

Zvol si mou cestu!: Edukační aktivity subkultury freeganů ve veřejném prostoru

Author(s): Kateřina Lojdová / Language(s): Czech

The monography examines freegan subculture as an educator in public space. Freegans are people who employ alternative strategies for living based on limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources. They are active in public space and represent environmental activism through demonstrations, happenings, using online media etc. The research goal was to analyse educational activities by subcultures in public space. The research design is ethnography. Data collecting methods were in-depth interviews with 16 people defining themselves as freegans and participant observation. The researcher spent more than a year in freegan subculture, visiting their activities in public and private sphere and making field notes. Text reveals concept of public pedagogy, which reminds multifarious ways in which the public space can be viewed as a site of educational discourse and defines public pedagogy of freegan subculture. The final part expounds subcultures as unofficial educational agents, acting outsider educational institutions.

Boris N. Čičerin o ruských dějinách (státní škola jako historiografický a společenský fenomén)

Author(s): Josef Šaur / Language(s): Czech

The aim of the book is to clarify one of the fundamental chapters of Russian historiography history. It puts forward analysis of the Russian history concept of Boris N. Chicherin (1858–1904) within the Russian historiography context of that time and within the context of Chicherin’s works on politics and philosophy. The paper shows the beginnings and circumstances of the so called state school of Russian historiography, the representatives of which were apart from Chicherin other reputable representatives of Russian historical thinking – K. D. Kavelin, S. M. Solov’ev and T. N. Granovskii. Using the relevant sources the individual aspects of their Russian history concepts are examined as well as the reaction to their work at that time. The book also shows the connections between the Russian history concept of Chicherin and Russian liberalism of the 19th century.

Korzenie antyautorytaryzmu

Author(s): Nina Witoszek / Language(s): Polish

Na nowo odczytuje polską rewolucję godności z lat 1976–1989: okres wyjątkowego „drugiego renesansu” w Europie, powrotu do ideałów godności, altruizmu, odwagi i współczucia.

In The Poverty of Theory (1978) E. P. Thompson after a long period of theoretical silence in Marxist literature – especially “Western Marxism” – brings Friedrich Engels back in the very center of historical-materialist studies. Even though Thompson’s primary preoccupation is focused on a critique of Louis Althusser’s structuralist Marxism, he will simultaneously try to defend historical materialism from abstract and ahistorical theories by using Engels’ empirical template. Following Thompson, and in a similar vein, Marxist economist Paul Sweezy, in his introduction to his Four Lectures on Marxism, will strongly emphasize the importance of Engels’ approach to the dialectics and his critique of mechanistic and reductionist theoretical procedures. In this paper, we will try to briefly examine mentioned epistemological discussions inclined by Engels’ philosophy, but also take into account some of the recent eco-Marxist (John Bellamy Foster, Paul Burkett, Elmar Altvater) and feminist analyses (Lise Vogel, Michèle Barrett) which affirm but also criticize certain aspects of Engels’s social philosophy. In a way, we will try to give an overview and examine Engels’ presence in contemporary philosophy and theory in general, on the 200th anniversary of his birth.

Author(s): Duško Radosavljević / Language(s): Serbian Publication Year: 0

Questioning the views in the work of Friedrich Engels, “The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State”, is the basic task of our effort to try to point out elements that are already known in the studies of this author, but also to get to know what are the moments from this well-known work, which seem different today as opposed to the period when Engels wrote it. Because, Engels greatly contributed to illuminating the genesis of the state, and the perspective of its development. Of course, considering the phenomena of culture and civilization, letters, analysis of the gentile order, its disintegration, and the formation of a new social organization - the state. This famous and influential book meaningfully describes, analyzes and gives a kind of synthesis of some of the most important phenomena in the development of human society, and the inevitable categories from the domain of social sciences and humanities as well.

Kritika kritične kritike i Sveta porodica: Protiv potiskivanja — za povratak zbilji

Author(s): Katarina Peović / Language(s): Croatian Publication Year: 0

The paper deals with a relation between historical materialism and idealism – while proving idealism to be a profoundly conservative point of view – proving the thesis through an example of the contemporary political discourse of Zoran Milanović, and his so-called “liberal progressiveness”. Holy Family – Critique of Critical Critique can be read via contemporary examples that supplement materialistic interpretation of liberalism/idealism with the psychoanalytical interpretation of suppression of class conflict. A nature of liberal interpretation of the world vis-à-vis materialistic insights (undoubtedly and with clearness) epistemological and not only by facts – can be seen from The Condition of the Working Class in England, a study of young Engels that will be taken as a foundation of the materialistic understanding of the modernity and related figure of an unaccommodated man. A fundamental possibility of an overcoming of dialectical paradox in the figure of a proletarian as an unaccommodated man (while avoiding idealistic “displacements”), can be found in the development of technology as a possibility of overcoming of the capitalistic mode of production, as a foundation of development and personal freedom that can be achieved only in the community.

Proiectul cultural al generației interbelice. De la provincialism la universal

Proiectul cultural al generației interbelice. De la provincialism la universal

Author(s): Ion Cordoneanu / Language(s): Romanian Publication Year: 0

In this chapter I will discuss the role that Mircea Eliade had, as an exponent of the generation, in the interwar Romanian culture in general and the humanist thinking in particular, under two challenges, the historical and the political. Between the two tendencies crystallized in the Romanian interwar period, philosophical universalism and autochthonism, Mircea Eliade intuits that, after the achievement of the national unity on December 1, 1918, the Romanian culture must assume a new direction. Between the first tendency, which understood that the specificity of modernity lies in the universality of truth beyond the national specificity, and the second interested in deciphering the "Romanian vein" in the cultural and philosophical capitalization of ethnicity, Eliade projects the destiny of national culture in the universal dimension, considering that Romania's destiny must be a cultural one, and our cultural modernity should by represented by the "universal man". Eliade's project, perhaps, was doomed to failure or had a partial and unfinished character, and modernity understood as cultural universalization was only the awareness of a trend that, under the "terror of history", did not materialize. But he became a personal project that Mircea Eliade assumed through the hermeneutics of the world's religions and the understanding of homo religiosus and "total man".

INDIVIDUALISM SI COLECTIVISM – TEORII, METODE ȘI APLICAȚII

Author(s): Marilena Doncean / Language(s): Romanian Publication Year: 0

The connotations of the term individualism have been debated many time throughout history, giving it a wide range of meanings, more vague or more precise, depending on those who use it - historians, writers, anthropologists, philosophers of social sciences, politics or political theorists. Each gave it its own meaning and thus integrated it into their work. The promoters of individualism have as their ultimate goal the individual goals and desires, in other words, individualism is the opposite of holism, collectivism, totalitarianism, which support the community objectives of society. The last part of the twentieth century was the period when neoclassical market policies began to dominate the globe. This was due to two series of major events: the crisis of the welfare state and the fall of communism. The triumphalist spirit of this age, present in works such as Francis Fukuyama's "The End of History and the Last Man" was the New Spirit of the New Age. The term individualism was the one that best captured this spirit better than any other.

Author(s): Stefan Ivanov Michev / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Publication Year: 0

The main thesis defended in the report is that modern social networks and virtual civil communities, among other things, can and should be analyzed as generators of fake news. The impact of fake news is not at all in the field of credibility. To reflect this fact, the term „post-truth“ emerged. In our opinion, in order to reveal the essence of fake news, it is necessary to use the concept of „illusion“, one of the main concepts in epistemology, but also in psychology, and in a certain sense also in sociology. In short, to understand why people believe fake news, one must analyze their need to live in an illusory world.

ÎNTRE INCLUZIUNE ȘI EXCLUDERE: POLITICI IDENTITARE ÎN ERA TRANSNAȚIONALĂ

Author(s): DUMITRU DODUL / Language(s): Romanian Publication Year: 0

The social, cultural and historical context in which we live significantly influences our behavior and the decisions we make. In this paper, we aim to provide an analysis of the philosophy of inclusion - of recognizing the other, which advocates for a society in which people, regardless of abilities, ethnic origin, religion, or any other personal characteristic, have the right to a dignified life. This involves creating equal conditions for all, eliminating barriers and promoting diversity as a value. On the other hand, cancel culture has emerged, a notion present in recent discourse, to represent a framework in which people with opinions and behaviors that do not fit into the group ideology can be widely ostracized. Such a perspective implies an approach to identity that presupposes the existence of a form of history negotiated by groups, transmitted through institutions so that the targeted individuals recognize themselves in it.
