The paper deals with nine authors of contemporary Serbian fiction which represent three narrative strategies: postmodern textual play, rewriting history, and obsessive confession. However, their common interest lies in the reinvention of reality. Dragan Velikić, Mileta Prodanović, Radoslav Petković, Sreten Ugričić and David Albahari manipulate facts and fiction in different ways, exploring the blurry border between the two, and the result of this playful trespassing is metafiction packed with actual events from either recent or remote history. Unlike their male counterparts, Serbian women writers explore the pursuit of happiness as their main motif. Mirjana Novaković, Mirjana Đurđević, Jelena Lengold and Ljubica Arsić either twist master narratives or reinvent intimate stories in order to escape preestablished designs imposed by the male-oriented literary canon.

This paper analyzes two works by Kazuo Ishiguro, with the objective of comparing – from the perspective of narratology – the narrative techniques, narrative elements and types of narrator in his latest collection of short stories Nocturnes (2009), on the one hand, and his novel The Remains of the Day (1989), on the other. The narratological analysis in this paper is based on the narrative theory of Gerard Genet, although we will also be referring to the relevant definition of unreliable narrator by Rimmon-Kenan. After underlining the similarities and differences in narrative techniques and types of narrator, in the last three chapters we focus on the language and narrative style, presence/absence of dialogue and memory as a form of narration. The ultimate objective of this paper is to answer the question of whether the typical Ishiguro’s narrator has changed in the observed twenty-year time span, or whether it has preserved its main characteristics with slight modifications and specificities.

Motherhood, with its origin and symbolism, represented the only order and orientation for the woman. If some woman dared question motherhood, she risked questioning her position as a woman. One of the most mysterious and complex relationships related to motherhood is the one between mother and daughter. The paper aims to single out the literary techniques and modalities that define this relationship, at the same time pointing out to the 20th-century Italian female authors dealing with this issue.

A film about three women, from three generations, in different places. They are all connected by the Virginia Woolf’s novel. This one is being written by her. Laura Brown reads it and lives it. So does Clarissa. There’s a fourth character. It’s a poet, sick of AIDS, homosexual, making part of that group of characters who look like themselves, one like each other, looking like the same, identical, in almost identical situations, in times which we shall understand as different, but on realise them as being simultaneous. I propose thinking the movement of this film under the perspective of the other, by a dialogue with Zizek and Levinas, passing through Tassin, the novel which inspired the film, by Michael Cunningham, as through Mrs. Dalloway. The questions which guide this reflection are: who is the other in this film? And what’s proposed to this person? What does the other says about myself?

The article takes a closer look at web series which not only are distributed exclusively via world wide web (usually YouTube and Vimeo) but for which the hypertextuality, modularity or transmediality stand for their essential qualities. I have divided web series into three categories: 1) very cheap, short series and series of a few episodes amateurish in form ; 2) semi-professional series of a longer length, sometimes genre-oriented; 3) professional “extensions” (spin-off’s) of traditional TV series, 4) branded series considered to represent narrative commercials of minor and major brands. The author analyses the form and content of the above regarding both fictional and documentary works; elaborates on one of the most complex examples (“H+. The Digital Series” by Warner Bros.) and finishes with opportunities and disadvantages of such a film form.

The Shadow-Line represents a fundamental achievement in Conrad’s literary career and constitutes the peak of the author’s ethical reflection on the relationship between literature and life. By combining the autobiographical narration with the motives, atmospheres, and vocabulary of romance, Conrad presents the account of his personal experience of initiation to adulthood as a quest-like fiction of maturation through hardship. The key-figure of this merger is the “outsider,” who is an individual who learns how to endure hardship and failure by opening his or her soul to solidarity and respect for humanity, thus achieving wisdom and ethical worth.
