The Department of Paper Restoration in Dubrovnik, at the Croatian Conservation Institute, celebrates its 20th anniversary in September of 2019. The beauty of the job of paper restorers and related material lies in creativity and diversity. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces of paper, parchment and leather are restored. Drawings (pencil, charcoal, pastel, ink), paintings (watercolor, gouache, oil ...), posters, maps, charters, banknotes, scenography, signets, antependia, globes, manuscripts and printed books. The oldest works of art restored in the Department dates back to the 12th century, while those dated from 20th century are also being restored. Choosing a restored piece of art for this article was almost impossible, but we decided to elaborate on the 1993 story of saving a charter on parchment, found in a lead tube burning in the building of the Inter-University Center in Dubrovnik. However, this article will generally deal with parchment and its restoration.

The pressing need to conserve an early eighth-century Qur’an manuscript at the Chester Beatty in Dublin has served as the catalyst for significant investigation of both early Islamic manuscript materials, and the most suitable contemporary conservation techniques for this manuscript. CBL Is 1404 has suffered extensive water damage and subsequent corrosion of the iron containing ink it was written with. It has in turn been subject to numerous layers of previous repairs, many of which are now failing, ineffective, and incurring damage to the manuscript. This study will review the methodology of repair which has been employed to treat this manuscript. Following experiments using a wide range of materials and techniques, the resulting treatment plan uses a delicate balance of both traditional and modern parchment conservation techniques to stabilise the fragile folios. Experiments have included traditional methods for old repair removal such as mechanical removal with scalpels and the application of paste poultices, as well as both rigid and formable granular gels. Losses and tears have then been repaired using traditional adhesives with toned Japanese paper.

However, the municipality of Považská Bystrica decided to change that critical, unflattering situation and save the ruin. First, property-related relations had to be resolved in order to make investments in the renovation of this important cultural monument. The town has been the owner of the property since 2008 and has chosen systematic approach to deal with the renovation. The amount of investment and the time standpoint were affected by the City budget, as well as received grants and funds. In the first years, the focus was on site maintenance and the necessary remedial interventions. Gradually, the reconstruction required more complicated masonry to achieve aesthetical and functional use. The project “Recovery of the National Cultural Monument Považský Castle” was implemented within the program field called Protection and Revitalization of Cultural and Natural Heritage and Support of Diversity in Culture and Arts within the European Cultural Heritage of the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area and of the Norwegian Financial Mechanism. In Anatolia, which is very rich in terms of cultural works, there is no doubt that carpets, kilim and other plain woven works are the most common. So much so that, it is possible to come across these woven works in many museums, private collections or houses. Apart from museums or collections, individually owned works are transferred from generation to generation and are often attached a great value and kept as family heirlooms. The majority of the owners of these woven works take a number of maintenance and protection measures because of these protective approaches. In our country, since studies done on textile protection and repair are limited and people are not informed of the enterprises and workshops operating in the field of protection-repair or because the costs of these processes are quite high, the owners of these woven works make wrong interventions by alternative methods within their own means. In this study, knowledge levels and approaches of the owners of ethnographically valuable carpets, kilim and other plain woven works regarding the protection and repair of these works were examined. The 39-question questionnaire forms prepared was filled out by face-to-face or telephone contact with the owners of these works. Questionnaires were prepared in three different categories, which are the section on demographic characteristics, the section where the level of knowledge about the woven works the owners possess and the section where protection-repair approaches were determined. The data obtained from the survey were analyzed with SPSS package program, and knowledge level and approaches of the owners of these works were interpreted. As a result of the interpretations of the findings, inappropriate interventions were determined, and recommendations regarding the subject were made. With this study, it is planned to create and develop the infrastructure to raise the awareness of the owners of the woven works and guide them about maintenance, protection and repair.

This article describes the bindings of three 16th century prints that used to belong to the rich collection of Wojciech Mieliński, who was the Abbot of Trzemeszno and who died in 1621. The decoration of these bindings indicates that they most probably came from Melchior Nering’s bookbinding workshop while this craftsman was still connected with Poznań. The three volumes in question are currently kept in the Archdiocesan Archives in Gniezno.

The collections of the Jagiellonian Library contain valuable, lavishly painted manuscripts, commissioned in the middle of the 17th century by father Grzegorz Jan Zdziewojski of Łask (1609 – around 1685), an extraordinary person unjustly forgotten by the subsequent generations. He was one of the luminaries of his time. The lower classes of the Kraków society appreciated him above all for his oratory skills. He was known as an excellent preacher who gave his sermons in the churches of St. Mary and St. John. He supported students and provided them with scholarships. He was also concerned about the future of the University, to which he donated capital funds. The little known Libri promotionum and Libri diligentiarum are the most significant of his donations surviving to our times.

The collection of autographs of the former Prussian State Library in Berlin – now held by the Jagiellonian Library – contains a valuable autograph of Alexander Humboldt – fragment from Humboldt’s travel diary entitled Sobre algunos puntos interessantes para la Navegación, o extracto de las observaciones de longitud deducida de Eclipses del Sol y de la Luna de Satellites de Jupiter, distancias lunares y Chronometros en los annos de 1799–1803. The Humboldt’s manuscript travel diary was acquired by the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz Foundation in Berlin from a private owner in 2013. The part which is discussed in the present article (pp. 71–84) was cut out of Fascicle VIII of the notebook in the nineteenth century – most probably by Humboldt himself – after which it was annotated and given as a present to General Radowitz, who was a collector of autographs. It eventually found its way to the Royal Library in Berlin together with Radowitz’s entire collection.
