Pimen Constantinescu

Pimen Constantinescu

Author(s): Rodica-Maria Volovici,Elena Mărginean,Florin Blezu / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2016

In the economy of the library of the “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu Romania, an important place is taken by the collection of about fifteen thousand volumes, mostly in the humanities. These were donated by Pimen Constantinescu, the first librarian and manager of the University of Cluj Library, Sibiu Branch. More than 515 reviews can be identified as part of the donor’s collection: many of these works are literary magazines, fiction, poetry, criticism and other writing. The aim of this study is to present a history of this valuable collection, from its establishment up until today. The research starts from the context which brought Pimen Constantinescu to Sibiu, his personality, his concerns and his motivations. Furthermore, we identify the growth and means of organisation of this cultural heritage that was threatened with destruction under the communist regime. There are no studies directly concerned with the history of this collection. We will however try to find links between Pimen’s appraisals on Romanian publishing activities and similar studies. Although Pimen subscribed to the most important journals in the country, we will focus especially on those which are less well-known, particularly emphasizing those less highlighted by studies on the Romanian history of press.

Importanța cercetării de arhivă în elaborarea proiectului de intervenție Pompiliu Eliade 3, București

Author(s): Raluca Zaharia / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 7/2018

To develop an intervention project on an existing historic building we need to collect as much data as possible on its evolution in time, especially if that building was nationalized. In most cases, the archive and historical studies are carried out only for listed historic monuments and rarely for other type of buildings. Usually, the person in charge of these documents is an art historian or an architect and much information stays on paper, since these specialists aren’t those who elaborate the actual intervention project. The article explores how the archive research can directly influence the intervention building design.

The Problem of Evidence in SSH Research Evaluation

The Problem of Evidence in SSH Research Evaluation

Author(s): Lai Ma / Language(s): English Issue: 73/2020

This paper poses questions about the epistemology of research evaluation by examining the different kinds of evidence and by explicating the epistemological assumptions of using non-intersubjective evaluation criteria in research evaluation. It is argued that the over-emphasis on the wrong kinds of evidence can lead to erroneous assumptions about people and disciplines which in turn lead to undesirable changes in research practices and knowledge production. It is also argued that some issues in SSH research evaluation are rooted in epistemological assumptions that have led to the use of methodologies deprived of intersubjective understanding..

Laptops in the Auditorium: Facing Educational Challenges in Classics by Teaching Digital Tools

Laptops in the Auditorium: Facing Educational Challenges in Classics by Teaching Digital Tools

Author(s): Dimitar Iliev / Language(s): English Issue: X/2020

Higher education in the Arts and Humanities nowadays faces global challenges. By its very nature, Classics is among the disciplines which experience the harshest consequences of the large economic and cultural shifts we are witnessing. In the last decades, the students graduating from the BA curriculum of the Department of Classics to the University of Sofia have decreased in number, their profiles, motivation and interests have gone through various changes, their devotion to reclusive, slow and thorough acquisition of knowledge – so characteristic of the typical figure of the classicist a century ago – has significantly diminished. On the other hand, new technologies not only became ubiquitous in the lives of students and teachers alike but also gave rise to the multidisciplinary field of Digital Humanities, and Digital Classics in particular. Several such initiatives have been developing at the Department of Classics to the University of Sofia and, as of late, have also been introduced to the BA curriculum in Classics. The paper will discuss how getting involved in activities such as encoding ancient Greek inscriptions or working on parallel text alignment can serve as a quick and efficient introduction to more complex research problems and approaches in advanced fields like epigraphy. The general request of policy-makers and public alike for practically oriented higher education yielding quick and relevant results often leads to shallower educational results of lesser quality. Solving research issues through working on ancient sources with digital tools can be a way of acquiring deeper knowledge of the subject matter of Classics more quickly. Examples from different courses and project activities will be examined in order to observe how digitally-aided research works in practice.

Intangible Cultural Heritage Presentation and Preservation – Challenges and Opportunities for Museum Specialists

Author(s): Mariya Monova-Zheleva,Yanislav Zhelev,Evgeniya Nikolova / Language(s): English Issue: X/2020

Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) is a term invented to represent living practices, representations, expressions, skills and knowledge that communities, groups and individuals recognize as distinct but important aspects of identity. The safeguarding of ICH has become a topic of international concern primarily through the work of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) (UNESCO, 2018). Digital technologies and the internet bring unprecedented opportunities to present and preserve cultural assets globally and from a long-term perspective. The use of new technologies in the preservation and transmission of intangible heritage imposes urgent and significant changes in the museum specialists' competency matrix. The paper presents the main results from research con-ducted within the scope of the international project DigiCult in four European countries, aiming to identify the main gaps and constraints regarding the active inclusion of museum professionals in the ICH digital presentation and safeguarding processes.

Architectural Analysis of the First Mosque in Aleppo Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning (Al- Shuaybiyya Mosque)

Architectural Analysis of the First Mosque in Aleppo Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning (Al- Shuaybiyya Mosque)

Author(s): Rahaf Orabi / Language(s): English Issue: X/2020

Al- Shuaybiyya Mosque in the old city of Aleppo is recorded in Arabic chronicles as the first mosque built in the city by the Muslims. Its position commemorates the location of their first prayer. It is suggested that it was built on over Roman remains, then rebuilt in Zengid period during the reign of Nur al- Din al- Zengi. It underwent a renovation in the 14th century, and possibly most of the surviving structure either dates to the Ayyubid or the Mamluk period. However, to our knowledge, this mosque has not been explored in the con-text of an analytical architectural study to trace the remains of each period. This paper aims to examine the architectural development of the mosque using terrestrial laser scanning to identify the elements of the previous structures. The use of laser scanning offers highly accurate survey results, in addition to a better identification of architectural elements and their relation to the structure and the modern-day city. The conducted survey-study suggests the chronology of the building (phases of construction and their limits), based on the architectural analysis of the digital model and consultation of previous studies and historical text.

MOORE’S LAW AND BEYOND–CONTINUITY AND INNOVATION IN MICRO AND NANO-ELECTRONICS Perspective of two different generations

Author(s): Mihai Brezeanu,Dan Dascălu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

This paper is, in a certain sense, a dialogue between generations. More precisely, the authors are describing in parallel how do they view the evolution of electronics based on semiconductor technology along the last decades. Then, each of them is presenting how the profession of an engineer working in this field has evolved since the first integrated electronic circuits have been fabricated. They are spanning the period 1965-2020, corresponding to the rise and fall of the famous Moore’s law, in fact an empirical relationship predicting (up to a certain point) the fast increase of complexity of digital integrated circuits. These tiny components have been providing the hardware support for digital information technology, fostering the third industrial revolution, based on computers, automation and communications. Today technology continues to evolve, requiring immense investments and a tremendous multidisciplinary effort, as we are speaking about digital transformation and the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0 concept).

Pajimet e mjeshtërisë së arkivistit në strofullën e alkimistit digjital

Author(s): Ardiana Topi,Nevila Nika / Language(s): Albanian Issue: 1-2/2018

Archives may be similar to libraries or museums on their function, but never identical. Archival work and research are a perpetual struggle. The only solution for a fast and safe navigation in the archival records are the instrumenta studiorum, based on the analysis and synthesis of the data. Since the beginning of the 1990ies the General Directorate of Archives of Albania installed and adapted an electronic system, using the ISAD(G) and OAIS guidelines. The intranet system adapted for this purpose made it possible that the electronic data were available for the archivists and researchers. The entire metadata for the records were obtained manually by the archivists. Nevertheless, in the case of typed or printed records, the system of Optical Character Recognition would facilitate the process by creating electronic catalogues.

Skedimi elektronik në Arkivin Qendror Shtetëror

Author(s): Ardit Bido / Language(s): Albanian Issue: 1-2/2019

One of the most essential elements where technology and archiving match is the electronic description of documents. if it does not have the necessary metadata that make it descriptive, is not digitization, but just scanning. Meanwhile, an archive without media is incomplete, as it does not perform its functional task of guidance the researcher towards the document he requires. Consequently, the electronic description of the document enables the digitization to provide those information tools that help the researcher in finding the information he or she is looking for GDA will start this process in the coming months, in full compliance with international standards ISAD (G) and RIC.

Analytics-driven approach to agile software product delivery

Analytics-driven approach to agile software product delivery

Author(s): Bogdana Boncheva,Penko Ivanov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

Two key factors drive the software product delivery - the ideas for new products, and the latest approaches for optimized development. This paper focuses on the software development process and shows how data analytics enable innovation and efficiency in the delivery of a new product. The authors recommend the tools and techniques they have tested and proved successful in an international product organization within one of the leading media companies in the world. The presented analysis addresses the challenges of the standard practices in agile software development – continuous incremental product delivery and integration. This iterative approach implies developing and delivering features before a product, or even a product vision, are entirely complete. The method gains continuous feedback from the customer and adjusted revenue projections from the organization. The success of the approach relies on frequent and prompt decision-making by stakeholders from various backgrounds and with different skill sets. These decisions need to be well-informed as they drive rapid changes in the work prioritization and scope, and in the focus of the software development team—those frequent shifts in direction impact the delivery time and the quality of the product. Decisions on affecting the different elements of the engineering teams’ effectiveness rely on cumulative information about the teams’ capacity, lead time and throughput. This paper showcases how data analytics can drive prompt decisions and enable the necessary flexibility and improved efficiency. The authors demonstrate adapting the data visualization to the different audiences according to their interests and levels of expertise: customers, senior management, engineering teams. The paper advises how to choose the right data sets and make the correct assumptions for the data interpretation. The authors’ extensive practice shows these are the prerequisites to making the right decisions and delivering the impactful products that make an organization stand out.

Digital Control of Switched Reluctance Motors Based on Programmable Logic

Digital Control of Switched Reluctance Motors Based on Programmable Logic

Author(s): Yassen Gorbounov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

Switched reluctance motors (SRM are digitally controlled synchronous machines with salient pole construction. Therefore torque ripple is their inherent characteristic and this poses a serious problem in applications that require smooth torque and high dynamic performance. In order to be effectively controlled, they require real-time computation which tends to be very high speed as in some cases the speed of rotation can go up to 100,000 rpm and even more. With the growing quality demand of nowadays applications and the tendency of constantly lowering the costs, it is preferable to implement all the computation and control logic into a single chip. This makes the FPGAs extremely useful because of their high logic density, fine granularity, and capability of running algorithms in parallel. After briefly introducing the intricacies of the SRM operation and control, digital implementation of some of the core algorithms using FPGA logic is discussed. Using the finite state automata technique allows for embedding all the algorithms as independent parallel working modules onto a single embedded device. This makes the design compact and versatile and leads to increased performance and reliability.
