Summary/Abstract: Archives may be similar to libraries or museums on their function, but never identical. Archival work and research are a perpetual struggle. The only solution for a fast and safe navigation in the archival records are the instrumenta studiorum, based on the analysis and synthesis of the data. Since the beginning of the 1990ies the General Directorate of Archives of Albania installed and adapted an electronic system, using the ISAD(G) and OAIS guidelines. The intranet system adapted for this purpose made it possible that the electronic data were available for the archivists and researchers. The entire metadata for the records were obtained manually by the archivists. Nevertheless, in the case of typed or printed records, the system of Optical Character Recognition would facilitate the process by creating electronic catalogues.
