„Die Dorfhälften” auf dem Verwaltungsgebiet der siebenbürgisch-sächsischen Stühle (15.-19. Jh.)

Author(s): Andrei Nacu / Language(s): German Issue: 60/2017

The Saxon Seats of Sibiu, Orăștie, Sebeș, Miercurea, Nocrich, Cincu, Sighișoara, Rupea and Șeica Mare-Mediaș (the Two Seats) were well-established in Southern Transylvania by the later Middle Ages. In the 15th and 16th centuries, several villages and village parts belonging to the Alba and Târnava Counties were assigned to the Saxon Seats and to the city of Sibiu. Similarly, there was a case of a Saxon village part that was separated from the Rupea Seat in the early 16th century. This article aims to register the settlements that belonged partly to the Counties of Alba or Târnava and partly to the Saxon Seats and follow their administrative evolution until the 18th and 19th centuries. Nine divided villages were identified using historical documents, conscriptions, village monographies, old maps as well as several relevant studies. These villages were Jidvei, Bălcaciu, Cornățel, Rucăr, Jimbor, Racovița, Orlat, Săcel and Jina. Other cases involved small enclaves subordinated to a different administrative unit, such as a noble court in Hălmeag, or possessions that were granted to praiseworthy officials of the Sebeș Magistrate and were not accompanied by a change of territorial jurisdiction (Săsciori, Sebeșel and Șugag).

„Чикаго – българският град“ – поглед отвън и отвътре

Author(s): Dilyana Ivanova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2016

By using the methods of the ethnological research, the present article presents the dynamic of the state of the Bulgarian community in Chicago and its manifestations,as well as the reasons behind the designation of Chicago as the „Bulgarian city“not only by the local Bulgarian group but by the „others“ as well – the society, the authorities and the media in the United States. The study focuses on the spaces ofthe Bulgarians in Chicago and the metropolis, the representative institutions of thecommunity – its churches, schools, cultural and public institutions, the media, thefeasts, the events as well as the places of memory. As a certain manifestation of self-confidence and successful integration of the local Bulgarians in the multiculturalenvironment of Chicago, the article analyses also the book „Chicago – the BulgarianCity“ in which the Bulgarian community describes and identifies itself. This book as well as the examination of the social life and cultural activities of the Bulgarians in Chicago and the suburbs show that the diaspora is interwoven in the American social structure but at the same time maintains its own parallel structure which fits the American nation with its specific character.

Author(s): Mirčeta Vemić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 2/2006

During the last 60 years, the awareness and need for compilation of national atlas of Yugoslavia have been present among geographers, cartographers, geodesists and numerous other scientists. Even some funds were available for this purpose, but there was no realization. The political determination and consent between the Yugoslav republics were lacking. Moreover, there were no necessary scientific and expert potentials and knowledge for accomplishment of such a cartographic project, which is one of the main premises of atlas compilation. The aim of this paper is to point to the main theoretical, methodological and technological premises of national atlases compilation, and to contribute to broader scientific and practical overview of the issues of possible project of compiling the National Atlas of Serbia.

Тицај плеистоценске глацијације на морфолошку разноликост увала Дурмитора и Жијова

Author(s): Sava Simić,Aleksandar S. Petrović,Predrag Đurović / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 1/2010

The alternation of glacial and carts processes as the consequence of frequent changes of glacial and interglacial phases could be recognized at the mountains Durmitor and Žijovo. Re-modeling of glacial morphology (cirques and trough valleys) carved currently karst topography with domination of uvalas. Their size and shape vary considerably as the consequence of differences within the preexisting glacial forms. Duration and intensity of kartification, which re-modeled former glacial forms into karst landforms, determine the degree of uvalas development and formation of three distinct evolution types of high-mountainous uvalas: glacial, glacial-karst and glaciofluvial.

Топография Симонаса Даукантаса в Санкт-Петербурге

Топография Симонаса Даукантаса в Санкт-Петербурге

Author(s): Karina Čarykova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 23/2021

Simonas Daukantas spent 15 years (between 1834 and 1850) living in St Petersburg, where he worked as an assistant registrar at the Senate. This article highlights the exact addresses of where Daukantas lived and published books in St Petersburg. The address of the place where Daukantas lived in 1837 is published for the first time; the drawing of the building has been obtained, the landlord identified. Apparently, in 1837 Daukantas lived in the building owned by Marya Nelsen, the wife of chief (regiment) doctor Gavrila Nelsen, at the intersection of Kazanskaya street and Voznesensky prospect (or Voznesensky avenue; the exact address: Voznesensky Ave 15–17/Kazanskaya St 45). The article features the drawing of this building and contains information about its condition, which shows that in late 1830s and in 1840s the building was in an appalling state of repair. Marya Nelsen died in 1840, and the building was assigned to a care agency. Some of the tenants continued to live at the building for some time, only to move out later; apparently, Daukantas was among those who vacated this residence. More details are provided about Daukantas’s place of residence in 1842 (address: Malaya Masterskaya 9, the building near the Church of St Stanislaus), providing the drawing of the building and publishing pictures of how it looks today, revealing the characteristics of the building’s architecture, including those from the time when Daukantas lived there. The building next to St Stanislaus Church at Malaya Masterskaya 9 was built in 1841–1842. In one letter of 1842 Daukantas claimed his residency at this address, so we suggest that he might have moved in right after the completion of construction. The addresses of three printing houses where Daukantas published his books have been identified. On top of that, details of what the buildings looked like during Daukantas’s time there have been obtained. Christian Hintze’s printing house was located at Durygina’s house at Nevsky prospect 8. The building has survived to this date virtually intact. Ivanov’s lithograph based on Sadovnikov’s picture represents the view of the building in 1830s, the approximate time of Daukantas’s book publications at Hintze’s printing house. Later, the enterprise was acquired by Merkushev. The printing house of Karl Kray was located in the corner of Frost’s building at Malaya Morskaya 12/Gorokhovaya 9. Analysis of the archive drawings of the buildings has provided some insights into what the building’s appearance was during Daukantas’s time in St Petersburg. Before 1850, Gretsch’s house (current address: Moika 92; the building was demolished in early 1960s) was home to Eduard Pratz’s printing house. The blueprints of the building that were found in the archives shed a light on what the building looked like in 1840s and 1850s, when Daukantas would publish his books there. Gretsch’s own publishing house was in the same building. The archives contain blueprints of Gretsch’s house on Moika riverfront, showing the appearance of the building at the time of Daukantas’s printing his books there: the façade off Moika, the courtyard, and the plan of the building. Giedrius Subačius has noted that 1841–1845 were the years when Daukantas was the most consistent in his orthography. Βetter living conditions in the new building constructed in 1842 most probably had allowed Daukantas to improve the quality and efficiency of his work. It is also worth noting that the publishing houses were close to the places where Daukantas lived and worked. All these buildings are located in the Admiralteisky district of St Petersburg.

ТРАКИЙСКАТА ТОПОНИМИЯ ДО КРАЯ НА І ХИЛ.ПР.ХР.

Author(s): Svetlana Yanakieva / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 21/2016

The study of Thracian toponymy with a view to chronology has different aspects. The history of each source gives a more precise picture of the chronology of the attesting of the data. Tracing the chronology of emergence is of greater significance both in linguistic and in historical plan. Owing to the areal positioning of toponymic isoglosses or isoglosses of toponymic elements, the conclusion reached in the study concerns the chronology of the emergence of groups of toponyms united by common characteristics. Tracing their propagation leads to the conclusion that the oldest layer of Thracian toponymy has lexical and word-forming parallels with the pre-Greek toponymy in the southern and western parts of the Balkan Peninsula and in Asia Minor. There is a newer layer that demonstrates lexical parallels only within the Thracian linguistic space. It comprises the settlement names with two roots and with second components recurring repeatedly, whose dissemination occurred successively throughout the first millennium BC. On the whole, the models for the formation of the Thracian toponymy were completed by the end of the first millennium BC.

Тракийското име на селището край пътната станция Castra Rubra – Sub Zupara

Author(s): Tosho Spiridonov / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 20/2012

This essay interprets data from existing text records, archaeological observations, and archaeological digs from the area. Based on personal observations and analysis of historical and geographical conditions, conclusions about the origins of the name Zupara of the Roman Age Thracian village and its chronology were made. The settlement displey a higt living standard from the Neolithic period till the Middle Ages. A golden necklace from the late Bronze Age was discovered in the area in the grave of a noble Thracian, as well as a big necropolis from the Thracian period (1st millennium BC) near today’s village of Izvorovo, and a large settlement from the Roman Age. The mansio Sub Zupara was built on a lower altitude “beneath” this settlement. The station was later named Castra Rubra after the fortress that was built nearby.

Транснационални наследства: селският дом и историята в Югоизточна Европа

Author(s): François Ruegg / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2021

Paradoxically enough, our present times combine conservation with the destruction of architectural heritage. The preservation of this heritage is closely related to the foundation of the nation state and serves to show the “national genius” embodied by the peasant. Simultaneously, the different disciplines that study the issues of architectural heritage show that there is a tendency of mutual disregard. Nevertheless, the transnational concept of the rural home in Southeast Europe (mainly Romania and former Yugoslavia) which I have studied and documented in the 1970-s, displays similar features in close geographical zones, and also in zones that are marked by the culture and history of imperial colonization: Austrian in the first case and Ottoman in the second. The perspective from the point of view of regional heritage makes possible to apply a trans-border approach in order to reveal connections of kinship between neighboring villages separated by political boundaries. In the article, the differences between certain cultural areas are explained with the support of history.

Три карты Европейской Сарматии Клавдия Птолемея

Author(s): Petr V. Shuvalov / Language(s): Russian Issue: 4/2013

For the European Sarmatia Ptolemaeus had almost no information about how peoples were related to rivers. Reconstructed map has clear zones of the “loose linkage” between the names: the map is divided into the Baltic and the Black Sea areas. There were three different maps: map of peoples along the way next to or along the Vistula river and the coast of the Gulf of Venedae (map “Vistula-Baltic” as part of the map “Germany-Baltic”), a map of the peoples of the South Sarmatia, Dacia and the Carpathian Mountains to Rhipaean Mountains (map “Carpathians-Rhipaeoi”) and the map “mountains-rivers-settlements” from Vistula to Maeotis, which may already contain information on the coordinates. At the very least, the northern part of the third map used by Ptolemaeus, was written in the Old Roman Cursive. This hypothesis may help to identify two peoples: Stavanoi and Kareotai. Indeed, judging by the plates from Vindolanda, one of two common forms of the Latin letter L, namely the so-called “short” form could easily be confused with the letter T. The form *careolae can be compared with the Karelians — one of the eastern branch of the Baltic-Finnish population. This “Karelian” hypothesis can be correlated with the “Tarand” hypothesis, which states that “Karbones” (‘coals’), geographically related, according to Ptolemaeus, with Kareotai, are to be designated to the people or culture of the cemeteries with stone fences (Tarandgräberkultur) — common ancestors of Livonians, Aestii and Finns.

The map shows the Black Sea with its northern, eastern and southern shores (the western part is cut off ), as well as the whole of the Azov Sea. The article minutely studies stylistic features of the map. There is a table with the list of geographic names found on the map (toponyms and hydronyms): the original Turkish spelling and transcription and their respective identifiable modern names.

War and warfare are related to human existence and actions. All have been during the course of time set into an actual frame subjected to multiple natural and social influences and laws. It is exactly the laws that can be precisely analyzed in leading warfare and other military actions, from training armed forces to preparation and selection of battlefield, application of military techniques and decisions on the level of tactics represented in actions, ways and means for achieving clearly oriented results on the level of smaller military units and strategy, as well as system of military knowledge and skills on preparation and leading war on the level of larger military units. Therefore achievements of history and geography are necessary for actions of military system, because with their achievements they indirectly support leading, decision making and organizing military activities during peace and war time. Military history and military geography have had, from the beginnings of institutional studying of military sciences, a significant position in Art of war as disciplines (branches) even though their point of origin is in their parent sciences – history and geography. In its core it is not just using the results of these sciences, since through theory and practice of warfare these sciences (history and geography) have been formed and transformed as special scientific disciplines that have been integrated into military theory and practice. During the sixty years work of School of Artillery and Military Academy, significant subjects with their place in the processes of educating of military personnel were the studying of history and geography in several forms. That studying had a principal goal, to acquaint cadets by learning history with events from the past, and by learning war practices to get them to make observations on certain experiences and lessons from the previous wars that would enable them easier understanding and give them ideas for resolving future war situations. From the perspective of geography, main goal was to enable cadets by learning and applying what they`ve learned to study those geographic features that have influence on leading, organizing and planning military actions and using armed forces in particular military situation. Learning national history and history of liberation wars of Serbia was supposed to nurture freedom traditions of Serbian people and by that influence developing patriotic feelings and strengthening morale of the future officers, and in the classes on Military Geography cadets were studying farther and nearer geographic regions, foremost on the level of strategy and tactics. Typical example of symbiosis of Military History and Military Geography in the Serbian Army, and their influence on creating war plan is represented by the preparations for the liberation of Old Serbia and Macedonia in the First Balkan War.

Харпократ в Тракия през Гръко-римската епоха

Author(s): Vessela Atanassova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 25/2020

When Ptolemy I became ruler of Egypt (306 BC), he continued to have interests in Thrace and Asia Minor where Lysimachus, its ruler, married his daughter Arsinoe II. Most likely, their wedding was fixed with certain benefits, which led to the permanent presence of the Ptolemy in Southern Thrace. In fact, the whole 3rd century was marked by the presence of the Ptolemies in Thrace. This for sure, but also for some other unclear reasons facilitated the spreading of the Egyptian cults in that region. Several Egyptian deities, mainly Isis and Sarapis, but some other deities in relation with them, were found on various documents attesting their presence in Thrace from the Hellenistic period to the end of the Roman Era. Harpocrates, the presumed son of Isis and Sarapis in Greco-roman period, was one of those deities. Unlike his divine parents, he was a synnaos theos and his cult spread on a different manner. According to the monuments he was more likely worshiped because of his qualities as savior god and his magical competences. The study will examine the existing documentation and will discuss the mechanisms of spreading of the Harpocrates cult in Ancient Thrace from the Hellenistic period onward.

This study presents the possibilities for using different colour models for visual interpretation of satellite imagery. Using the RGB model to visualise different spectral bands as a false colour composite image make it possible for different types of objects and features on the Earth surface to be highlighted and easily discerned based on their specific colour. Examples are shown based on satellite imagery from several free sources, e.g. the USGS’s Earth Explorer, the ESA’s Copernicus Open Access Hub, etc.

Чий е бронзът с типовете „кръгъл щит//кипселе“ от разкопките на тракийското селище, наричано „емпорион Пистирос“

Author(s): Boryana Russeva / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 25/2020

The paper presents the extremely interesting bronze coin of the types of round shield // two-handled cup (kypsele, kotyle, diota) (Fig. 1a–1b) discovered in 1996 during the archaeological excavations of the Thracian settlement located in the area of Adzhiyska Vodenitsa near the village (now a town) of Vetren, Septemvri Municipality, better known as “Emporion Pistiros”. Grounded on both informative types known as parasema, the author tries to interpret (issuer and time of minting) this unique bronze issue – an allusion of the Odrysian Royal court from the first half of the 4th c. BC under Seuthes II, Kotys I and their successors via the unambiguous presence of the cult cup – the kypsele or kotyle decorating the reverses of their coins.
