Re-design an Open Space Through the Urban Farming

Author(s): Rossella Franchino,Nicola Pisacane / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2016

To intervene on urban development, with the aim of finding an alternative model that has emerged in the last century, a sustainable approach is necessary so as to establish the territory as a pattern in which it is not possible to detect the boundaries between the natural and artificial environments and in which each process is controlled so that its impact and, consequently, the irreversible degradation induced is the minimum possible in relation to the constraints of the process itself. The urban context should be seen as an organism with a dynamic balance achieved through the technological control of complex functions. With the aim of achieving these objectives, the role of open urban spaces is particularly important, since they constitute nodal elements capable of performing the delicate function of linking the urban systems with the surrounding natural ones, while assuming a strategic role in the transformation of anthropized areas. In this context urban farming can make a valuable contribution as an effective instrument for the renewal of urban open space because offers significant possibilities from an environmental, economic and social perspective (Franchino, 2015).The drawing of a territory offers a contribution into the phases of a local context analysis and architectural design communication. In the specific field of urban farming and about the project introduced in this abstract, the study of the area has been the preparatory analysis phase for the knowledge of the local resources, founding premise of a proper planning process. The analysis of the agricultural vocation of the area emerged also through the map comparative study, both diachronic and synchronic. This study, simultaneous to the study of urban farming models, has allowed the development of the project idea. The representation and communication of the project took place through different methods and tools. The articulation of the interior and open spaces occurred through plan and front views, the communication of the project is rather occurred through render views that illustrated both changes through day and night views, but also the landscape modifies through the evolution and the alternations of crops over the seasons. In order to obtain an applicative definition of these concepts, is presented a structured case study related to the requalification of a degraded urban area in the South of Italy.

Edukacyjno-wychowawczy wymiar kontaktu uczniów z przyrodą

Author(s): Magdalena Kołodziejska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2016

Natural sciences lessons can be an interesting adventure for students, if we allow them for active participation. They require to engage from students in learning activities, but also provide better quality and assimilation of knowledge and higher skills level. Outdoor activities can offer the possibility of cross-lessons integration so essential in modern teaching – outside the classroom the content from different subjects complement each other. During these classes the student gets not only theoretical knowledge but also comprehensive, intelligently learns the surrounding world and processes occurring in the natural environment and cultural heritage. Outside the classroom single lessons can be carried out or can combine them together. Classes can take place in the immediate vicinity of the school, eg. school garden or in a more remote area. These activities engage all children, not only the most talented, enabling direct contact with the environment, offer the possibility of outdoor activity, to involve all the senses and thus are considered by students, regardless of their age, the most attractive. The content of presented report are based on both theoretical assumptions , the results of the available studies and teacher observations independently conducting the outdoor activities in two different age groups: students of 1st and 4th stage of education.

Edukacja przyrodnicza małych dzieci – opis przyrody czy jej badanie?

Author(s): Urszula Poziomek,Andrzej Tarłowski,Dominik Marszał,Elżbieta Barbara Ostrowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2015

Recent studies of developmental psychologists show that children already in infancy can reason, explore and experience. It is not true that a child up to 7 years of age is not able to plan their actions and realize what they had planned. It is also true that children in preschool and early school should learn about nature descriptive method. Commonly accepted goals of environmental education clearly indicate that the research method is basic to obtain the understanding of natural processes and phenomena and acquiring skills of their data. The educational documents in force in Poland in kindergarten and grades IIII does not sufficiently indicated the leading role of this method in natural science education of young children, despite the changes that have been carried out during the reform program in 2008 years. There is also no consistency in the area of general and specific requirements formulated for the higher stages of education, especially for the second stage (nature, class IV–VI of primary school). This may result in problems arising from the research skills deficit in students entering grade VI of nature as well as lower results of Polish students in international studies. There are examples of good practice in this area, even if the standards and programming framework in the United States, which can be used when amending the existing document core curriculum document of pre-school education and general education in the natural area. It seems significant to institute a systemic change in kindergarten and early school teacher training, as well as to adapt the teacher support system to new challenges related to early science education.

Author(s): Sebastian Pilichowski / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2015

When I am writing this sentence, the year 2014 is slowly coming to an end – it is 11.11.2014 today. Therefore, it is a good time to summarize last months and reflect upon the situation. Among many positive observations, I find two areas which have drastically changed my opinion about some people. To organize the text in a logical form, I dare to divide it into two sections: 1) guided tours and outdoor lessons, and 2) student conferences.

Problematyka różnorodności biologicznej w kształceniu studentów na kierunkach przyrodniczych

Author(s): Alicja Walosik,Beata Jancarz-Łanczkowska,Elżbieta Rożej-Pabijan / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2014

Education concerning biodiversity has a long tradition in Poland, and has its origin in environmental education in XIX century. Biodiversity education in a novel approach encompasses three aspects – environment, society and economy. This approach arise with Education for Sustainable Development and Biodiversity Convention in 1992 during United Nations conference in Rio de Janeiro „Environment and development”. Poland as the cosignatory of Biodiversity Convention is obliged to educate for biodiversity protection on all levels of formal education. What means, that content connected to biodiversity should be present in all documents related to formal education, including curricula at universities. Here we aimed at comparing curricula of two faculties at Pedagogical University in Cracow: Biology and Environmental protection to verify if they include content related to biodiversity.

Environmental awareness and attitudes of farmers with environmental commitments

Author(s): Adam Kowalak / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2014

Environmental education for adults living in rural areas can be considered both from a theoretical point of view and practical-learning. The article describes a study to identify ecological awareness of farmers on agri-environment schemes. Activities of Selected Agricultural Advisory Centres were presented as an example of training for adults in the countryside. An attempt was made to assess activities in terms of the shaping of farmers’ pro-environmental attitudes. The results obtained will be used to determine the educational needs for local farming communities. The results highlight the poor environmental awareness of the farmers researched. The shaping of adult attitudes towards the environment is founded in school. Deficiencies in education do not foster later development of favourable habits towards the natural environment. While conducting lively educational activities, Agricultural Advisory Centres aim mainly at vocational training. Education about the natural environment is not an objective in itself but is focussed towards economic goals. Lack of cooperation between AACs and schools makes it difficult to introduce the concept of lifelong education.

Rośliny towarzyszące człowiekowi w średniowiecznym Krakowie

Author(s): Marcin W. Woch / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2013

The history of human civilization is marked by accompaniment of specific plants. Their occurrence is strictly connected with economic processes and places disturbed by human. During a few archaeobotanical studies carried out in Kraków between years 1934 and 2001, many fruits and seeds of pant species were found in medieval layers dated to the 9–15th centuries A.D. They were mainly useful and synanthropic plants: weeds, ruderals and former cultivars or cultivars. These plants were dominated by weeds of cultivated crops characteristic of cornfields and flax fields and of root crops and gardens. Second types of debris are dominated by species characteristic of annual and biennial vegetation communities in ruderal habitats also thermophilic and heavily nitrophilous ruderal communities. Thanks to application of ecological characterization of individual synanthropic species and phytosociological analyses of ecological amplitudes of assemblages forming by them, it was possible to reconstruct environmental conditions ruling in medieval Kraków and location of several types of agricultures.
