The twin transition in the EU constitutes an important research and policy area nowadays. Efforts are multiplied in order to face challenges resulting from the digital transformation of economies and societies as well as fostering sustainable development goals. The considerations presented in this chapter are guided by three objectives: 1) an outline of the EU’s digital transformation efforts with the identification of key projects in this area; 2) an outline of the EU’s green transformation efforts;and 3) an identification of the challenges arising from green and digital transformation for the EU. Text analysis and case study are used as research methods in the chapter. The results show that the twin transition is a process that already started being implemented, the EU has formulated strategies, key projects and indicators to be measured. Now a common effort of multiple stakeholders: Member States, the EU institutions, European enterprises and societies is needed to face diverse challenges of the green and digital transition in the EU.

Euro Area Membership Effects on Inflation

Euro Area Membership Effects on Inflation

Author(s): Avi Tahchieva / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The inflation rates and their convergence within the Euro area were a major concern even before the advent of the single currency. The study attempts to examine the main factors of inflation and differentials in members of the Euro area for the period 2007–2022. The search for the causes of the current high inflation starts with the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. The global economy recovered fast once the pandemic ended and the restrictions on consumption and travel were lifted. Then conflict between Russia and Ukraine caused energy and commodity prices, including food prices, to increase. The differences between the inflation rates in the various countries of the Euro area first started to widen in 2020 when the pandemic caused stronger disinflation in countries that have large tourism sectors. As the pandemic faded, inflation picked up most in countries where the economy had declined less and where labor shortages were starting to put pressure on wages.

Inflation or Deflation? Chinese Economy in 2023

Inflation or Deflation? Chinese Economy in 2023

Author(s): Shouyi Zhang,Guangxing He / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

In March 2023, data released by China's National Bureau of Statistics showed that the growth rate of CPI narrowed and the decline rate of PPI widened from the previous. The downturn in price data triggered market discussions about economic "deflation". After a retrospective study of Chinese economy since 1980, we do not think that the downturn in price data is the start of economic "deflation", but rather the early stages of recovery after the end of the three-year epidemic.

Impact of After Covid Inflation on Investor Protection

Impact of After Covid Inflation on Investor Protection

Author(s): Diyana Miteva / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The after COVID inflation that started in the late 2021 seriously affected all EU economies. This paper aims at investigating how inflation impact the value of client assets invested on the capital market. It also concerns the issues of investor protection of such assets. Inflationary periods are stressful for the whole economy and especially for consumers. The longer inflation lasts the more significant impact it may have on investor behavior. In this paper it is argued that on a short term basis inflation could not be compensated at stock market prices but on a long term the capital market stock market returns overwhelms inflation. Investor protection regards the financial safety net which includes deposit guarantee and investor compensation schemes, which provide protection to investors at European level. Investor compensation schemes have not increased the level of protection for decades which due to the higher inflation rate causes a decreasing real protection. Deposit guarantee schemes on the contrary have imposed very high limit of protection in 2009 and 2010 which is 5 times higher than the minimum required limit on the EU level.

Inflation and Defined Contribution Pension Schemes in Central and Eastern European (CEE) Countries

Inflation and Defined Contribution Pension Schemes in Central and Eastern European (CEE) Countries

Author(s): Jeko Milev / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Pension systems in most of the CEE countries were significantly reformed at the beginning of 21st century. The introduction of fully funded components in addition to the traditional pay-as-you-go ones marked the beginning of a completely new age in the development of the pension systems in the region. The basic goal of the current paper is to research the investment performance of the defined contribution pension schemes in several CEE countries – Estonia, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria. The thesis defended throughout the article is that conservative types of investment portfolios for long term investors such as pension funds are not appropriate especially under scenario of significant inflation rate. The results of the research show that those countries where pension fund managers were allowed to structure portfolios with different risk profile have much higher chance to protect the savings of insured individuals in real terms in prolong period.

Big Data, New Advanced Analysis Tools for Researchers: The Case Study of Forecasted Volatility of the Use ESG Bonds

Author(s): Sarah Goldman,Virginia Zhelyazkova / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The aim of this work is twofold. Firstly, we search to clarify the notion of Big Data (BD) and demonstrate that the taxonomy constitutes one of the fundamental tools to portray the BD characteristics. Secondly, we have shown that the traditional analysis instruments are now relatively obsolete to integrate such outstanding amount of data; consequently, new advanced analysis tools are recommended. Based on a neural network approach, we have found that this methodology improves the forecasting results of high volatility assets compare to a basic GARCH model.

Asymmetric Rivalries: The Case of Lebanon’s Financial Crisis

Asymmetric Rivalries: The Case of Lebanon’s Financial Crisis

Author(s): Hachem Hicham / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Unlike mainstream explanations, this paper is less concerned with the causes of the financial crisis in Lebanon as much as it raises the problem of adverse relationships between institutions of money creation and destruction. The analysis builds on the theoretical approach of mimetic rivalries and applies tools from graphical models in games theory. It aims to study the sensitivity of solvency constraints to explain asymmetric relationships. The applied case of Lebanon shows two relevant results (1) asymmetric relationships between economic agents and (2) top-down dynamics of money creation and destruction. These findings imply an institutional model of extractive economic policy dominated by strategies of vindication and rivalry.

Digital Solutions for the Administration of Land Management Processes in the Republic of Bulgaria

Digital Solutions for the Administration of Land Management Processes in the Republic of Bulgaria

Author(s): Marina Nikolova,Penka Chernaeva,Petar Chernaev / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Due to errors in the administration of processes and delayed digitalization of management processes related to land, as well as a subsidy policy based on outdated data, the confrontation of individual subsectors in the Bulgarian agricultural business is constantly growing. A large part of the information systems, and especially the information, were available at different times to individual economic entities. For the most part, large farmers started the digitalization of their business long before the state administration. The possession of information has created serious advantages. The consolidation of agriculture, and hence all the negative consequences, is also due to this fact. Late implementation of digital solutions for management of agricultural business leads to a decrease in its efficiency. The digitalization of land administration processes by the state has been implemented in slower timeframes, with untimely implementation of effective solutions. Making management decisions „piecemeal“, without connection between individual applications and data, leads to the collection of incomplete and unreliable information, as a result, the agricultural business in Bulgaria has a relatively slow development. It is necessary to build a comprehensive management vision based on information systems and a secure mechanism for control of deviations, and the institutional framework and digital solutions to be synchronized before their design and timely implemented after a thorough analysis, including forecasting the financial economic results of their implementation. At this stage in Bulgaria, digital solutions for control and management by the state are characterized by catch-up, not anticipatory development. The role of the state as an administrator of the relations between owners and users of agricultural land and owning the overall information about the state of the land resource should be a leading one to achieve effective support for access to information and digital solutions. The digitalization of land administration processes by the state is successful and timely when there is a connection between the individual applications and data, and the information collected is complete and reliable.

Personality-Related Determinants of Entrepreneurship in the Light of Own Research in the Agribusiness Sector

Personality-Related Determinants of Entrepreneurship in the Light of Own Research in the Agribusiness Sector

Author(s): Barbara Kiełbasa,Marcin Krzysztof Kopyra / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The aim of this article is to identify the personality traits that can characterise entrepreneurial people and to determine what they believe to be important in achieving success. Entrepreneurship is defined very broadly in the literature and researchers consider different approaches to this issue. Certainly, being entrepreneurial is a combination of knowledge, passion, hard work and active learning. What is more, in many studies there are hypotheses indicating a correlation between the possession of certain character traits, or even temperament, and the propensity to start a business. In this article, an analysis of the behavioural and attitude approach to entrepreneurship is undertaken, which means that some personal traits and behaviour of the entrepreneurial person are analysed, as well as their perceptions of the issue. A descriptive-inductive method was used, using simple statistical methods. A survey method was used to obtain empirical data. An online survey form was sent to agribusiness entrepreneurs from Poland, the entrepreneurs were randomly selected. The respondents were primarily active in industries such as fruit, vegetable processing, as well as meat. A total of 57 returns were received between January and March 2023. The questionnaire included questions on personality traits that may be conducive to an entrepreneurial attitude, as well as identifying attitudes towards certain management situations. The respondents rated themselves as extroverted and open-minded, confident in their abilities. Most respondents described themselves as sanguines. A number of scientific studies confirm that sanguines and extroverts are the people who are most successful as entrepreneurs. Considering the statements of the respondents, there was a significant difference in the inconsistency of the responses from those labelled choleric and phlegmatic. The most consistent statements were obtained from sanguinis. Sanguinis were the most likely of all respondents to believe in the strength of their predispositions and character traits. Cholerics, due to their explosive nature and not always good decisions, felt that it was appropriate to monotone external factors, as this was the basis for decision-making. As a result of the survey and the literature review, it can be confirmed that entrepreneurial personality traits play an important role when setting up one's own business and also when continuing to manage it, but also an external situation and business environment play an important role in decision-making process. All these factors should be correlated and a good entrepreneur should be able to use his/her strengths to exploit market opportunities. According to the authors of this article, it is necessary to integrate one's personality traits and aptitudes with market information and ongoing monitoring of the industry to achieve success.

The aim of this study is to establish the connections and interdependencies between the skills for achieving success of managers at middle and high levels in the management hierarchy, their personality traits and their level of emotional intelligence. Preliminary results among managers at high management levels with disabilities show levels of emotional intelligence above the average for the Bulgarian population. The most highly developed are the managerial skills related to the development of teams and adhocracy (management of innovations, the future and continuous improvement). The most highly developed are character traits such as independence and transcendence. The results confirm that emotional intelligence is positively related to the development of managerial skills. Components of emotional intelligence such as Managing one’s own emotions and Managing the emotions of others together with Independence as a character trait have an impact on managerial effectiveness.

Организационни фактори за възникване на конфликт на трудовата роля в предприятиетo

Author(s): Emil Georgiev / Language(s): Bulgarian Publication Year: 0

This paper presents data from an empirical study, specifically from a factor analysis. Seven groups of role conflict impact factors are identified from a Likert scale used for statements with five-step responses. A scale comprised of 28 statements by House and Rizzo (1970) was used for providing a combined role conflict divided into: conflict related to 'job duties', conflict in 'role performance' and conflict in 'expected outcome' and had a Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.952. The factorial results obtained from the study identified high levels of role conflict among the staff (n = 57) of the examined manifacturing organization.
