Author(s): Elena-Mădălina Vătămănescu,Florina Pînzaru,Andreia Gabriela Andrei,Vlad-Andrei Alexandru / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2014

In a world where competitiveness has become the second nature of the business environment, an insight on the organizations’ endeavour to go international seems natural. And yet, most of the times, under the lens of the worldwide researchers and practitioners, corporations have been settled as milestones. In this context, focusing on the small and medium enterprises (SMEs), on the managerial and entrepreneurial micro-universe may generate an alternative perspective on their approach on the international markets versus the global market. Starting from this premise, the paper intends to analyze the business internationalization versus business globalization perspectives assumed by managers of SMEs at present. The distinction between the two approaches is based on a step-by-step touch of the specialized markets versus a straight forward venture into far-away markets with a view to obtain higher profits. The emphasis was laid on 107 European steel pipe SMEs, whose managers responded to a 15-item questionnaire regarding their market strategies and experiences. As the results show, the socio-demographic characteristics of respondents have a considerable impact on their approaches on the issue, the choice for going international or going global relying on the subjects’ age, number of foreign partners, experience on the foreign markets and education field.

Are Social Enterprises in Romania EMES Social Enterprises?

Author(s): Loredana Orhei,Joop Vinke,Sharda S. Nandram / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2014

Recent efforts of the European Union to integrate new member states such as Romania expand to the social economy sector as well. Works by Hoogendoorn et al. (2010) and Kerlin (2010) regard Europe as accommodating two schools of thought related to social entrepreneurship: EMES and the UK – social enterprise. Both views place great emphasis on social enterprise as the main indicator of the social entrepreneurial phenomena for the European continent. Using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, we attempt to answer the following question: Which forms of Romanian social economy organisations correspond theoretically and empirically to the EMES social enterprise criteria? The findings show that there are two types of organisations in Romania (sheltered workshops and enterprises set up by associations and foundation) that fulfil the EMES criteria to the largest extent. They are generally between 5 and 10 years old and are active in agriculture, trade and education.

The managers that intend to develop their businesses at the global scale are frequently confronted with situations which require skills related to effective communication in diverse cross-cultural contexts. The paper’s aim was to answer the following question: “How can a Cultural Intelligence web platform provide the support for international managers in their search of a specific business culture’s peculiarities?” In this way, we conducted a qualitative research by using the web platform Country Navigator, in order to compare Romania’s cultural profile from business point of view with two representative E.U. countries’ profiles, France, respectively Germany. The in-depth analysis of the cultural dimensions also reflects interesting aspects which must be taken into account by the managers. The paper concludes with several recommendations for the managers concerning practical ways to “bridge the gaps” between the cultural profiles of the countries taken into consideration in the study.

Management Changes and Challenges to Preserve Holocaust Extermination Site

Author(s): Florence Luxenberg-Eisenberg / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2013

The Holocaust is named for the systematic, bureaucratic, well-organized murder and genocide of over 6,000,000 European Jews implemented by the Nazis and their collaborators. From 1933 to 1945, Jews were humiliated, tortured, starved, incarcerated, systematically executed, shot into mass graves, and gassed for the purpose of total annihilation—all performed under an official capacity. The most characteristic feature of the Jewish genocide is the bureaucratic organization and management of the feat, whereby besides the SS, state institutions and members of various groups were to varying degrees accomplices on account of their knowledge and responsibility—the doctors who performed medical experiments; the engineers who constructed the gas chambers and crematoriums; those who participated at the highest levels of government. Hitler could not have completed his accomplishment without the help of collaborators such as Hungarians, Ukrainians, Lithuanians, and Romanians. In addition, with countries remaining silent with screaming indifference, even turning refugees away, the Nazi machine was given an additional gateway to implement the task at hand.

Romanian Culture and its Attitude Towards Entrepreneurship

Author(s): Ana-Maria Grigore,Andreea Mitroi / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2012

The “overview” culture of the nation we live in has an overwhelming influence. A strong entrepreneurial culture is the foundation of a dynamic economy. It reflects the measure in which a certain country’s society supports the entrepreneurs’ ideas and initiatives and the way in which it can direct its young people towards a career in business by developing the necessary skills in them. Its geography and history, its Latin origin and its orthodoxy determine the diversity of the Romanian culture’s characteristics. Being positioned at the intersection of multiple national cultural influences, the Romanian culture is in itself difficult to describe. At the same time, local culture is encyclopedic, not specialized, which is very useful for the transition period, in which a business promoter has to solve a great deal of problems in the most diverse domains. Living in a culture which favours the improvisation, the Romanian entrepreneur paradoxically found it an opportunity, especially since he had started with all odds against him when compared with his Western European competitor, armed with know-how, funding or the back-up of his country of origin.

Cultural Globalization in the Context of International Business

Author(s): Monica Cojocaru / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2011

Beyond locating meanings of globalization, and their connection to those of culture and cultural environment of international affairs, in this paper we propose to analyze the significance of this connection as the main motivation for research. Initially, the primary theory of international economic relations has denied aspects of the influence of culture in profit in the international trade. Classical doctrine of international trade theory based on Ricardo explain on a purely commercial gain related strictly to the traditional factors of production. Subsequently, globalization has changed the equation by introducing new variables in international trade. In the current stage of development, companies are increasingly global, while the consumer remains or cultural features distinguishing it emphasizes the international market. The essential question here goes: How do we do global sell to an individual consumer? What role do knowledge and respecting individual cultural or national? The answer is based on the special attention paid to the local consumers of products and services according to the particular consumer experience.

National Bank of Romania Management in Time of Financial Crisis

Author(s): Ioana Florentina Savu / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2011

According to the objectives pursued in preparing Romania's accession to the European Union (E.U), the National Bank of Romania (N.B.R.) acted in line with Romania's constant efforts aiming to adapt - institutionally, structurally and operationally - the Romanian economy to the E.U. requirements. The E.U. requirements on financial crisis management ask for an agreement of co-operation between all national financial supervisors, central bank and finance ministry. The current financial and economic crisis started at the end of 2008 and appears to be unprecedented in the last century. For 2009, N.B.R. tried to stay consequent in its economic growth projection bringing the following arguments: • lower ratio of exports to Gross Domestic Product (G.D.P.); • lower level of financial intermediation; • the fact that Romania has a nearly balanced energy balance; • exchange rate flexibility; • large volume of structural funds which may be attracted to Romania.
