Author(s): Yana Gergova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 19/2021

The paper is going to present two equal in their base cases of effacement of a sacral site but with distinct differences, observed in their present development, status and usage. These are the church of the former 162 village of Zapalnya “St. John of Rila”, submerged by the waters of Zhrebchevo dam in the 1960s, and the church of Viden village “St. Athanasius”, flooded after the construction of Koprinka dam. Nowadays the remains of both “submerged” church buildings are on the surface – visible experienced in a new way. The analysis is based on field and bibliographic research conducted in 2019 within the project “Submerged Heritage. A Village on the Lake’s Bottom: Migrations, Memory, Cultural Practices” (NSF, 2018–2021).

Author(s): Ivanka Ivanova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 21/2022

Doubtless the citizen of Ohrid Kuzman Shapkarev had a substantial merit to keeping from oblivion the memory of the Miladinov brothers from Struga and to forming an adequate appraisal of their capital work BULGARIAN FOLKLORE SONGS. Due to ill fate he was a member of the family only from September 1863 till March 1870 being the husband of Elisaveta – Dimitar’s eldest daughter. Though, as he wrote in the preface to the first edition of his “Materials about the life description of the Hr. Miladinov brothers”: “…. I am flattered by the confidence that, I will be able to provide our grateful people with evidence about their lives, deeds and martyr’s deaths, which although being not the most true and precise, will be at least incomparably much more true, precise and complete than all those which might have been produced by anybody in any amount till now.” The research presents how Kuzman Shapkarev succeeded in overcoming the cronyism in this work of his and how he through the vicissitudes 58 in the lives of his in-laws and collaborators managed to give an insight of the national liberation movement in Macedonia during the second half of the 19th century. Though closely related to the Miladinov brothers, he did not save his criticism regarding the shortcomings of the presentation of the songs they had collected. Moreover, his disapproval of the publication aimed at evoking true philological preparation of a new critical edition, which took 80 years to appear.

The paper discusses the following expression used in the region of Samokov: “The arm of the Church is Virgin Mary/ St. George or another saint” that means that this church is dedicated to Virgin Mary/ St. George, etc. and its local feast is at the respective date. The author looks for the sources of such expressions and puts forward the hypothesis that they stem from the anthropological view of the Orthodox Christians living in this region towards the church and church temples: they are perceived as and designated with the human body members: Christ is the head of the church, while its arms are the saints.

This article will explore the postscripts in the Divine books, kept in the church “Uspenie Bogorodichno” in the village of Shipochane near Samokov. In many of the available manuscripts, write-in notes are found, more than 20. From them, we can piece together when the book was purchased, who was the buyer and his intentions. Most of the postscripts are from the first haven of the 19th century. The oldest dated postscript is found in a handwritten gospel from the 15th century. It was gifted to the church by the villagers in 1678. The postscripts are valuable historical records and are keys to understanding the history of the temple and the village. Amongst the pages echo the voices of people long gone.

After the liberation from the Ottoman Empire, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church began to actively care for Christians in Bulgaria. The Church does not limit care giving to the spiritual needs of people; it also provided material help by developing broad social activity. Both the high clergy and the ordinary clergy and Christians are active units in this activity. The period before the Second World War was a time of comprehensive development of church activities for those in need of medical help, shelter and care.

Author(s): Lyubomir Tsonev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 21/2022

The question of whether there was a small ruler’s castle in the medieval town of Sredets arose in the second half of the twentieth century. The lack of sufficiently reliable written and archaeological evidence is the reason why this issue remains unresolved to this day. Several hypotheses have been formulated, but none of them is yet generally accepted. This report proposes a new hypothesis based on a watercolor from the end of the 19th century, based on an already vanished photographic picture taken in the same period.

THE PAST AS A RESOURCE FOR THE FUTURE – THE ESTABLISHMENT OF PETRICH HISTORY MUSEUM

Author(s): Sotir Ivanov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 21/2022

Ponemata diaphora

Author(s): Iliya Iliev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2022

The collection of texts known under the title Ponemata diaphora, composed probably before the end of the 14th century, represents part of the decisions of various ecclesiastical legal cases taken personally by Archbishop Demetrios Chomatianos (1216–1236) or by the Synod of the Church of “all of Bulgaria” with headquarters in Ohrid. The content of the documentary material reveals the colorful picture of the daily life of the Bulgarians of that era – their joys, sorrows and daily cares for home and family. One of the most interesting documents in the collection is the one included under No. 16, representing a letter reply to an unnamed ruler – Theodore Comnenus or Ivan II Asen.

Maria Theresia i zdravstvene reforme u Bjelovaru

Maria Theresia i zdravstvene reforme u Bjelovaru

Author(s): Dubravko Habek / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 16/2022

The subject matter is Maria Theresa's policy oriented towards health reforms and positive demography across the Danube Monarchy, which included Bjelovar, a city that Empress Maria Theresa had built in the very centre of the Varaždin Generalate in 1756. This policy consisted of the legalization of medical experts’ education, and the establishment of hospitals and xenodochia based on legal acts covering public health issues, and numerous community regulations. These documents were the key fundament of the later legal health regulations. Before the founding of the city of Bjelovar, there existed no organized or professional healthcare. However, after the founding of the city, legal health regulations were implemented in all components. The first hospital in the city, which still operates today, was established; company sanitary stations with surgeons and company midwives were formed across the Generalate; the first pharmacies were opened; xenodochia (lazarettos) were established in the outskirts of the city as quarantines of a kind; many educated health workers of regulated professions were active in the city and its surroundings: medical doctors (doctors of medicine), junior and senior surgeons, pharmacists, midwives, medical assistants, and nurses. The geographical position of the Varaždin Generalate and Bjelovar, far from active battlefields and the Habsburg-Ottoman border, ensured – thanks to the implementation of regulations covering public health issues – safer public health and the development of healthcare and medicine. The centralized approach of the Viennese court in the second half of the 18th century exercised influence in this respect.

Uspostava i funkcija Sanitarnoga kordona

Uspostava i funkcija Sanitarnoga kordona

Author(s): Nikola Ostojčić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 16/2022

Numerous reforms and breakthroughs, which were truly felt in the coming centuries, marked Maria Theresa's rule. The Cordon Sanitaire, same as Bjelovar, became – thanks to numerous reforms – better organized after her coming to the throne in 1740. The basis for the most prominent among these reforms was the 1770 General Healthcare Book of Rules (Opći zdravstveni pravilnik). Bjelovar was founded as one of the responses to the reorganization of the Military Border, whereas the Cordon Sanitaire was initially established as response to repeated occurrences of the plague in the Habsburg territory, since this situation needed a solution. Unlike Bjelovar, the Cordon Sanitaire ceased to exist after the demilitarization of the Military Border. Nevertheless, its existence and development, same as Bjelovar's, remains one of the symbols of the reorganization of the Military Border and the 18th century in general.

Ethnic contact zone has been for centuries present along the Croatian-Hungarian border on the axis of the Drava River, stretching from the Mura River to Vojvodina. The objective of the paper is to illustrate the main factors that influenced assimilation after the First World War, and the forming of the border between Hungary and the Kingdom of the Serbs, the Croats and the Slovenes (later the Kingdom of Yugoslavia). It further shows the status of the “imprisoned” persons of the Croatian, the Slovenian and the Serbian nationalities on the Hungarian side of the border, the characteristics of their social and economic relations with homeland, political and geographical changes that influenced their everyday life, and the consequences thereof. High-quality foreign policy between Yugoslavia and Hungary and the atmosphere created by the great European politics marked their bilateral border relations in the period between the two World Wars.

Author(s): Maria Mateoniu-Micu / Language(s): French Issue: 4/2020

Escaping the Everyday Life: Artists’ Holidays at 2 Mai and Vama Veche in the Communist Era

Author(s): Iuliana Dumitru / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2020

During communism, the villages of Vama Veche and 2 Mai became a mythological place for the cultural and artistic bohemian. Artists and intellectuals came there during the summer in order to work and relax in a space where the authorities chose to stay away (at least in a visible way). This indulged „freedom” transformed the area in a safe space for their daily interaction and activities, beyond borders and limitations. After the fall of communism, this area became a kind of „lieu de mémoire” revisited mostly in the imagination while invested with the aura of sacredness.

In the Shadow of the Heroes. Women’s Hardships of the Everyday Life During WWI in the Light of Memoirs

Author(s): Anna Chudzińska / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2020

Has the First World War accelerated the emancipation of women? Are wars beneficial for women or do they reinforce women’s traditional, culturally accepted roles? Do women have their position in the heroic patriotic discourse? There is no clear answer to these questions. After all, the First World War, on the one hand, accelerated the process of women’s emancipation, but on the other hand, slowed it down or even blocked it. This article deals with several memoirs written by women about everyday life during the WWI emphasizing both the emancipation (through liberties brought by the war effort to organize hospitals etc.) and the relegation to old duties as caring for the family and wounded soldiers, working for the homeland.

“We made up another collective farm… a third one!” Everyday Life and the Collectivisation of Agriculture

Author(s): Cornel Micu / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2020

The collectivisation of agriculture was the first policy of the Romanian state aiming to radically change the rural area. It affected directly the everyday life of the Romanian villagers by transforming the state from a distant, rather “urban” idea, into a social, political and economic actor directly involved at the local level. Lasting for more than 13 years, the collectivisation was the most noticeable aspect of the communist intervention, taking place alongside with other policies such as the development of party organisations in the villages, the expanding of the local bureaucracy or the nationalisation of the village economy. As the rural population represented the majority of Romanians and the support for communism was rather scarce in the villages, the party used a cautious strategy of collectivisation, preferring, at least in the initial stages of it, to strengthen its presence in the villages and to avoid forcing the peasants to join the collective farms. Although it did not manage to completely avoid the usage of repression and the clashes with the peasants, the Romanian communist party was successful in preventing widespread protest movements such as the ones in 1953 in Poland and DDR, in 1956 in Hungary or in 1968 in Czechoslovakia. This article try to explain, based on the everyday life in several villages in Romania, the strategies which the party used in order to gradually transform the rural are and to avoid widespread protests from the peasants.

Author(s): Aleksandra D. Matić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 78/2022

This paper examines the ideological ranges of contemporary stories about Kosovo, as reflections on the social, political, and cultural background in which they arise, as well as the processes of establishing or abandoning the dominant identity matrices, based on the Kosovo myth. As Kosovo is our great story, the constitutive narrative of our national being, but also of Serbian literary-historical consciousness, it proved necessary to shed light on how contemporary Serbian prose reflects this narrative, but also to elucidate the diachronic perspective, which gives ideologies a mythical or symbolic dimension. The five authors and texts I am analyzing are Branislav Janković, “Nightingale the Chicken” (Slavuj-pile), Muharem Bazdulj “From Prizren the tame place” (Iz Prizrena mjesta pitomoga), Dejan Stojiljković, “No cour- age” (Nema hrabrosti), Vesna Kapor “What would you like to remember” (Čega bi voleo da se sećaš) and Ana Radmilović “Kosovo - three hundred miracles” (Kosovo– trista čuda). Among the selected contemporary stories, a range from establishingand empowering to challenging the dominant ideological discourse on Kosovo and its mythology is noticeable. The common intention is to constitute “small” stories by referring to a “private” view of Kosovo resulting from a fragmentation of the world image, and hence deconstruction or rethinking inherited identities based on new policies and ideological constructs represented in our era, which produce internal dissonance in the text itself.
