LADISLAV TAJTÁK: „... ABY SOM BOL ÚPRIMNÝ, NERÁD HOVORÍM O SVOJICH ROKOCH A NARODENINÁCH...“1 (27. APRÍL 1921 – 25. DECEMBER 2020)

Professor Ladislav Tajták (27 April 1921 – 25 December 2020) was one of the leading representatives of Slovak historical science in the second half of the 20th century. His research was oriented towards the history of Eastern Slovakia in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th, with special emphasis on the nationality problems of this multi-ethnic region, and on emigration to the USA. The series of studies he published on these themes still serve as basic starting points for new research by his successors. As chairman of the Eastern Slovak branch of the Slovak Society of History at the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Ladislav Tajták organized a whole series of academic conferences and seminars with the aim of stimulating research activities and propagating the historical science in the wider lay environment. In the 1950s and 1960s, he helped to build up the Department of History at the Faculty of Philosophy of P. J. Šafárik in Prešov (now Prešov University. As a university teacher, he encouraged critical thinking, consistent study of archive materials and conscientious work with written text among his students. He also did this as a member of the editorial board of the Historický časopis (Historical Journal) published by the Institute of History of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava. He received many honours and awards, but the one he especially valued was the title “Righteous among the Nations” granted by the Yad Vashem Memorial in Jerusalem.

Niektoré výsledky výskumu výchovy a vzdelávania dospelých na Slovensku v období ČSR (1918 – 1938)

In 2019, the research project VEGA 1/0303/17 called „Adult education in Slovakia in the conditions of existence of the Czechoslovak Republic (1918 – 1938)“ was finished at the Department of Andragogy of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Prešov in Prešov. It was symbolic, because in that year we could remember the 100th anniversary of the acceptance of the first edifying legislative precautions concerning the adult education in the interwar Czechoslovak Republic. The individual authors, who were also the solvers of the above mentioned project, concentrated in this paper on the presentation of the chosen results documenting the legislative precautions, institutional, organizational and personal ensurance leading to the creation of the modern form of adult education in Slovakia in the given period.

„…vonkoncom vždy je pekné znovu začínať…“ Pedagogické pôsobenie Alžbety Güntherovej-Mayerovej (1905-1973) na Univerzite Komenského v Bratislave

This article is an in-depth probe into A. Güntherová-Mayerová’s pedagogical activities at the Come- nius University in Bratislava, which affected an entire generation of our art historians. It based on the summarizing and verifying of known, but especially new information acquired through the study of various archive sources. It strives to provide answers to questions arising from our existing knowledge about the aforementioned issues starting with the clarification of the true extent of her work since the second half of the 1930s until 1961. The character and extent of her teaching is presented against the historical background of our university instruction of art history. Emphasis is placed on the crucial period of her university work in the socialist era of the Czechoslovak Republic in the1950s with the significant professionalization of education in the discipline, which we have partly inherited today, accompanied by its strong political deformation. Unfortunately, her forced dismissal from the university in 1961 meant the loss of the universal expert with vision, ability and a team capable of building a strong art-historical scientific-educational institute.

In the digital age, technological developments have emerged, which have prompted researchers and education practitioners to readapt to the new digital context. Research in university pedagogy has been extensive, with the aim of inserting this new digital culture into recent reforms. Computer systems accompanied by technological devices have been put into effect in order to demonstrate pedagogical innovation through the use of pioneering educational practices. According to the strategic framework of the European Education Area, the Member States of the European Union must set new objectives based not only on the strengthening of the means of strategic cooperation and synergies, in particular the European Research Area and the Bologna Process, but also on the setting of objectives and indicators of progress towards the achievement of the European Education Area. While taking into account the renewal of the university context in terms of education and training in the European area, it would be interesting to focus on the essential contribution of the Francophone University Agency (AUF) in the renewal of university pedagogy and training. Then digital pedagogical innovation (DPI) is carried out through networks and online computer systems. Finally, given the internationalization and digitalization of education, innovative pedagogical practices have emerged in the higher cycle. The implementation of learning management systems, whether in a blended learning model environment or in an open and distance learning environment, plays an essential role at the personal level in the development of learning strategies, but also at the collective level in the cultivation of professional competences.

Kultura (ne)talasanja: o reprodukcijskoj funkciji kolegijalnih odnosa u ustanovama ranoga i predškolskoga odgoja i obrazovanja

This paper aims at analysing the challenges of the reproductive function of the culture of (non-) conformity in early-childhood and pre-school education. Thereby, we mean quasi-collaborative relationships in which the often bogus collective harmony, non-questioning the actions of colleagues, avoiding conflicts, and economical time management are put in the forefront. In the introductory part, we analyse the potential of critical pedagogy as framework for considering the field of early-childhood and pre-school education. We moreover tackle different types of the operationalisation of cooperation, collegiality, and conflict in educational institutions, and offer an overview of empirical research pointing at the potential and the limitations of practicing different types of interpersonal relationships within them. In the central part of the paper, we reflect on the contextual determinants of the culture of (non-) conformity, specifically found in early-childhood and pre-school education institutions. There is an emphasis on the increasingly pronounced trend of their professionalization and the parallel process of their schoolification, as well as the gender-related dimension of the system. In the concluding part, we outline three main points of reflection: the polarity of focusing on short-term or long-term objectives of collective action; prioritizing personal or collective interests; and distinguishing between functional and dysfunctional conflicts in professional relations.

In early September 2024, the Faculty of Education at Charles University hosted the 32nd conference of the Czech Association for Educational Research, focusing on interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance education quality. The event, under the patronage of the new dean, doc. Antonín Jančařík, featured methodological workshops, plenary sessions, and thematic panels. Highlights included prof. Naďa Vondrová's research on interdisciplinary teaching and prof. Keith Barton's insights on preparing students for democratic participation. The conference also addressed the challenges faced by novice teachers, the importance of teacher well-being, and the need for comprehensive curriculum reforms. The event concluded with a panel discussion on contemporary educational research, emphasizing the integration of innovative teaching methods and the support of both teachers and students.

INTEGRATED TEACHING FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: BEHAVIORAL CHANGES IN STUDENTS

Achieving behavioral changes and acquiring new skills necessitates a multilevel approach, beginning at the individual level and extending to local and global contexts. Teachers hold a pivotal role in fostering a sustainability-oriented society by preparing students to become active citizens equipped with knowledge, competencies, and skills, while demonstrating entrepreneurial and proactive behavior. This study aims to examine the behavioral changes observed in students following the implementation of a project that integrated media-based educational content and didactically structured materials on sustainable development. The project was conducted between November 2021 and June 2022, involving 41 schools across Croatia. A total of 69 teachers and 1,037 first- and second-grade primary school students participated in the project activities. Data collection tools included an activity log, an activity recording table, a Facebook support group for teachers, and a final evaluation in the form of an online questionnaire featuring reflections from both teachers and students. These paper presents the findings of the final evaluation focused on students, analysed through descriptive statistical methods and qualitative approaches. Teachers observed diverse changes in student behavior, including increased care for plants and animals, maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings, valuing a healthy diet, respecting cultural and natural heritage, and heightened motivation for independent exploration. Additional improvements included enhanced empathy, collaboration, peaceful conflict resolution, polite behavior, inclusivity, self-confidence, freedom of expression, and active participation in discussions.

ONLINE TEACHING, LEARNING AND EVALUATION IN TIME OF COVID-19. LESSONS LEARNED AT THE UNIVERSITY LEVEL

Starting in March 2020, our way of thinking and doing teaching, learning and evaluating has changed dramatically due to the reality of the Covid-19 pandemic. Teachers and students alike had to move all their activity online, without preparation or notifications. After two years of practice, we return to the campus. The new reality is not similar to that of before the pandemic, students already ask for a blended teaching and learning. But can't the lessons learnt over these years contribute to improving the quality of teaching, learning and evaluation, can't the advantages of the different ITC tools used to be further exploited in face-to-face activities? Could the identified disadvantages not be real opportunities for their development? This paper aims to answer these questions offering in the first part the conceptual background (online teaching, learning, and evaluation), and in the second part presents the findings of a micro-survey conducted on teachers and students in the university system who have used different ICT tools and platforms during this period. The study will highlight lessons learned, difficulties, and their suggestions in order to create current characteristics of teaching/learning and evaluation. Subsequently, we will try to formulate a series of recommendations that can be applied at the course/seminar and university level that use blended teaching and learning as a new modus operandi.

THE ADVANTAGES OF USING APPLICATIONS TO LEARN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the efficiency of teaching and learning methods used by applications for learning foreign languages. Most applications are structured under the form of games, offering points and information on levels reached (e.g. Mondly), or they offer a character such as an owl whose living conditions depend on the way you study (e.g. Duolingo). The gamification methods have, as an advantage, a motivating factor for the learner to continue. They also provide a pleasant side to the process of learning. Since the learner does not have a teacher and classmates, the applications try to compensate for this by introducing funny characters, and also offering information on other users’ points and level reached. The characters can compensate for the absence of the teacher, who was not just offering information, but also creating rapport. The applications have the advantage that they engage the learners right away if they prefer the gaming style. The visual methods are also often used: vocabulary is taught by allowing learners to match pictures with words. Learners are participating actively while studying with the help of the applications, since they need to individually do all the tasks. In a real-life classroom, on the other hand, while some learners would be active and solve the exercises, others would just passively write down the answers. Some applications are focused more on the immersion method, taking advantage of the possibility of teaching vocabulary with pictures. Applications can be used by students for individual study, but they can also be incorporated as a practical part to foreign language classes that are taught face-to-face, in order to better engage students.

PARENTAL ATTENDANCE OF CHILDREN’S ONLINE CLASSES FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF PARENTS AND TEACHERS IN SAUDI ARABIA

This study explored parental attendance of elementary school children’s online classes from the perspective of parents and schoolteachers in Saudi Arabia. Results of a survey showed that more parents (54%) than teachers (46%) are in favor of parental attendance of children’s online classes especially if the children are in the lower grades, but more teachers (54%) than parents (46%) disapprove of parental attendance of online course. Both parents and teachers reported that parents play several academic roles in online classes for elementary school children which include organizing, facilitating, monitoring children’s attention in classes, motivating, nurturing, and supporting online learning. Those who do not prefer parental attendance indicated that traditionally, parents do not attend face-to-face classes and rules for online class attendance should be the same as face-to-face class attendance by parents. Children should be given the opportunity to adjust to online learning, face challenges, develop self-discipline, a sense of responsibility and autonomy. Both teachers and parents declared that parents should interfere if the child is having an internet connectivity, platform problem, difficulty submitting an assignment, is new to the platform or has a learning disability. The study reports teachers are parents’ views in details with some recommendations for better online learning and parental involvement.

MODDING INTERACTIVE DIGITAL ASSETS

The abundance of Digital Educational Resources (DERs) does not reduce or eliminate the need to modify DERs to better answer to specific learner needs and learning goals. The creation of new DERs can often be too costly and might require teachers to invest a significant amount of time to prepare the learning content, to design and test the resource and so on. The authors argue that modding existing DERs is a suitable approach teachers can take to provide quicklier a wider range of resources to engage and motivate learners of all ages. However, it remains debatable how feasible it is to adapt existing resources for new learning objectives or target groups. For resources to be adaptable, they should be designed with modding in mind. This issue becomes even more challenging when these resources have to be modified so that they can be used by disadvantages learners, expecially by learners with disabilities. How often teachers are in full control and how easy can a teacher mod a DER without any support from software developers? What kind of activities can be easilty modded? Which tools can better support this approach and can empower teachers to fully benefit of flexible resources that can be easily modded for new purposes? The authors aim to answer these questions and explore technologies that teachers can use directly, without support from developers, to create DERs that can be easily modded. They discuss examples of interative learning activities that can be adapted for new purposes, including for teaching disadvatnaged learners or learners with disabilities.

DIGITAL BELIEFS AND ATTITUDES OF ADULT EDUCATORS IN REHABILITATION AND TRAINING OF ADULTS WITH COGNITIVE NEEDS – PROPOSAL OF A SELF-ASSESSMENT TOOL

Active and successful participation in society of all citizens is the ultimate outcome of an inclusive policy. For people with a disability, active participation is challenging - many conditions need to be met. This work is included in TETRA-S Erasmus´s project Training of educators for transfer of transversal skills: improving competences for real Social Inclusion of people with cognitive disabilities (2021-1-BE02-KA220-ADU-000026913). In order to implement successfully educational strategies for adults with intellectual disabilities, professionals should be aware of their Beliefs on Digital Cognitive Rehabilitation, as previously shown in other studies (e.g., van der Ham IJM, van der Vaart R, Miedema A, Visser-Meily JMA and van der Kuil MNA (2020). With that purpose we adapt the Healthcare Professionals’ Acceptance of Digital Cognitive Rehabilitation). We adapt the 17 items from the original scale focalized in cognitive treatment of patients to cognitive intervention of clients and we create more 10 items to have a more biopsychosocial perspective about digital beliefs of professionals in cognitive intervention with clients with cognitive needs. Base in a small sample from the target population we present the study of content validity of the scale based on the clarity, objectivity and appropriateness of the scale.

IS CHATGPT REINVENTING HOW BACHELOR STUDENTS STUDY?

Since technology is rapidly developing and natural language processing applications are becoming increasingly prevalent in our everyday lives as well, it is important for us to be able to understand how younger generations are interacting with these tools and how they envision their futures as a result of this development. The purpose of this study is to investigate 48 undergraduate students' current usage patterns of ChatGPT as well as their perceptions regarding its future value, using a survey-based study. As a result of the study, one of the key findings is that technology has become an essential part of modern life, emphasising both the historical significance of Natural Language Processing (NLP) as well as the openness of the younger generation to adopting these emerging technologies. There is a wide range of activities in which students use ChatGPT in their daily lives, from academic support to social interaction to personal organisation, and it is used in both academic and social settings. Also, participants expressed optimism that ChatGPT is likely to transform their lives in the near future, while acknowledging that it may have some challenges along the way. Based on the results of this study, it is evident that NLP tools like ChatGPT play an important role in shaping the experiences and expectations of the next generation, as demonstrated in the study itself. As a result of this paper, there will be provision for further research and development in this field in the future.

THE EXPERIMENTAL VIGNETTE METHODOLOGY IN THE FIELD OF E-LEARNING FOR TRAINING THE SPECIALIST IN THE MANAGEMENT OF MILITARY ACTIONS

The military conflict triggered on February 24, 2022 by the illegal and unprovoked aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine in a so-called "special military operation", beyond the great loss of human lives and considerable material damage, calls for a broad reconsideration of the management of military actions and implicitly the skills of the military specialist. Defining the battlefield environment, describing the battlefield's effects, evaluating the threat, and determining the threat courses of action are the important steps for knowing and controlling a crisis or a military conflict. Planning the military force, respectively its capabilities, in order to repel the aggressor’s forces, as in the current military conflict situation, is the responsibility of the military specialist at all levels of command: tactical, operational and strategic. The digitalization of education increases the speed of training the specialists in all societal fields and provides new opportunities to access the databases stored in digital format. The transfer of knowledge from printed format to digital support is only one component of the digitalization which facilitates the access to previous research. This impels us to bring to attention the experimental vignette methodology, due to its applicability in the field of E-Learning for training the specialist in the management of military actions. Within the limited space of this paper we will explain the need to apply the experimental vignette methodology in the field of e-learning for training the specialist in the management of military actions, approaching its benefits and shortcomings in managing a crisis or a military conflict situation.

PROPOSED MINIMUM PRACTICES FOR DISTANCE EDUCATION

The coronavirus epidemic quickly forced educators to use those digital solutions which have been with us for a long time. Distant education has spread exponentially in almost days. Still, neither the educational institutes nor the students were prepared for such a tremendous and rapid change. The main question of information security considerations is the level of information security of confidential, sensitive data during work in an educational environment. It can be maintained if the students study from home instead of the educational environment. The security of the overall educational system is crucially determined by the IT infrastructure used and how it is used. The main elements of this are:  The endpoint workstation of the students learning online from home (notebook, tablet, and any associated peripherals);  Home internet service and its settings;  The central (server-side) device or application to which connects online;  Internet connection and communication and its tools. This paper reviews the critical issues of securing the learning environment during distance learning. According to our survey, the key risks and vulnerabilities educational institutions should pay special attention to during the distance learning when the students work from home are  logical attacks,  third-party incidents,  IT expertise and skills.

A PROPOSAL FOR THE TEACHING OF SCADA SYSTEMS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

In this work, it is proposed to integrate virtual laboratories in the students' learning system, which represents a real industrial problem, with the aim of reducing the existing gaps between industry and education. The paper presents the learning of SCADA systems based on virtual laboratories used for education that will contain industrial automation equipment test materials. A case study of a hydro power plant is taken into analysis which contains the most used water turbine. The complexity of the turbine control system makes it an ideal choice for an educational application. The student must supervise the condition of each piece of equipment within the proposed installation and intervene in case of abnormal situations. The decision-making process is clearly visualized by students because it has a direct effect on the application and thus allows a quick corrective measure when needed, making the learning process very fluent. The application shows how their decisions can affect the safety and operation of an industrial system. The teaching method based on such a platform is considered very effective, being more attractive and simpler than traditional methods.

ANDRAGOGY: CONSTITUTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENTIFIC FUNDAMENTALS

This article attempts to develop the theoretical foundations of adult pedagogy - andragogy. The emphasis is made on characterizing adult learning as the object of andragogy and defining andragogy as an educational science and practice. The functions, principles and legitimacy of adult pedagogy are described in detail. The epistemological aspects, the forms and the types of learning and education of adults are substantiated. The connection, link of andragogy with other sciences: philosophy, psychology, biology, anthropology, general pedagogy is widely presented. The data of express study confirm the topicality of problem of the adult pedagogy development and, first of all, of the theoretical and methodological foundations. The conceptual approaches presented in the article will essentially contribute to the development of andragogy as a pedagogical science, but also to the practice of adult learning and education.

PARTICULARITIES OF CHILDREN WITH LEARNING DISORDERS

The term learning disorders refers to the inappropriate development of reading, writing, speaking and numeracy skills. Specific learning disorders are not a disease, but special ways of processing information, which are due to different development and functioning of the central nervous system. There is no drug treatment for these disorders, only specific learning methods. Children with learning disabilities cannot learn to write, read and count through the traditional classical methods in mainstream school, needing specialized support from speech therapists or psycho-pedagogues who know alternative therapeutic methods. The success of the therapy is ensured to a large extent by the early recognition of the problems and the start of its application as early as possible. The complex examination done by the specialist will cover the following areas: sensory-motor skills, verbal skills, memory, attention, intelligence, learning style and scholastic abilities.
