Mediating Grannies: Caring for Young Grandchildren who Use Digital Media

Mediating Grannies: Caring for Young Grandchildren who Use Digital Media

Author(s): Galit Nimrod,Dafna LEMISH,Nelly Elias / Language(s): English Issue: 26 (2)/2020

Based on online surveys conducted in the United States and Israel, this study explored grandmothers’ involvement in mediation of their grandchildren’s digital media use. Study participants were highly involved in restrictive, instructive and supervising mediation—and to a much lesser degree in co-use and technological mediation. Their involvement was significantly associated with their familiarity with digital media popular among children, engagement in other activities with their grandchildren, and past mediation (as mothers). Results highlighted the technical challenges older women face in their efforts to mediate their grandchildren’s digital media use.

Using QR Codes as Compensatory Measure for Students with TSI

Using QR Codes as Compensatory Measure for Students with TSI

Author(s): Robert Berezovski,Eugenia Jianu / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

In the context of new informational and communicative technologies (NTIC), the support for students with specific learning disabilities (TSI) should become increasingly easy to offer and implement. In accordance with the legal provisions of the methodological rules and their objectives, among the compensatory measures that can be offered to students with TSI during the teaching-learning process, is the use of computer / tablet with a software - vocal synthesizer, that turns the reading theme into a listening theme. In this category should also be included a smartphone with an application that allows reading the QR codes and that has the role of interpreting an image and decipher that code. The application can be downloaded from the App Store (for Apple products) or from the Play Store (for Android). Taking into consideration that these codes allow a huge data storage due to the fact that the writing of data is done both vertically and horizontally, their use in the educational process takes on new dimensions. QR codes can be used in the teaching-learning process for students with dyslexia, simply by scanning the code with the mobile. Once generated, this code is applied on the manual or on teaching material for which it was generated and simply by scanning the code with the phone, the students can access the manual or teaching material in audio, video and text formats.

Interactive Multi-Sensory Environments for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Interactive Multi-Sensory Environments for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Author(s): Vytautas Žalys / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The emerging of digital technology not only encourages the development of new tools but also changes traditional approaches to solving emerging problems. The sound, music, art, colors, etc. that prevailed in the 20th-century forms of therapy are being replaced by integrated systems that overcome many of these forms, thanks to digital technology. With the increasing number of people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the world, such systems provide new opportunities for the treatment of these disorders. In this research, the creation of such a system has been chosen as the object of work. The article presents an interactive tool for the education of children with ASD created by audio, video, and computer technologies and assesses its potential impact. The experimental research and its results are presented. This study aims to evaluate an interactive instrument developed for the education of such children. Following the objectives of ensuring the interactivity of the process, provoking all the perceptions of the subject, and developing the subject's ability to respond to the environment, a personalized audiovisual environment was created. For interactivity, the virtual program EyeCon, Webcam and camcorders, video projector, and speaker system were used. The study was conducted with one subject and a case study method was used. The impact of the instrument was established based on a survey of the parents of the child and the findings of childcare experts. The results of the study demonstrated the positive benefits for this child such as increased eye-to-hand coordination, concentration duration, improved communication, and emotional expression. The results obtained show that such interactive multi-sensory environments in special and general education schools can be a supplemental tool for traditional methods.

Obrazovanje Djece sa Invaliditetom u BiH: Dug Put od Integracije do Inkluzije

Author(s): Aleksandra Ivanković / Language(s): Bosnian

IMPROVING WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT THROUGH EVOLUTION IN KENYA: THE CASE OF NAIROBI AND KAKAMEGA COUNTIES

IMPROVING WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT THROUGH EVOLUTION IN KENYA: THE CASE OF NAIROBI AND KAKAMEGA COUNTIES

Author(s): Sylvester Ngome Chisika,Chunho Yeom / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

This study aimed to investigate the progress of women's empowerment through employment opportunities in Nairobi and Kakamega Counties in Kenya between 2013 and 2017. Despite the increasing policies that aim to mainstream social equity and equality, there is still a significant gap between policy commitments and practices. The study evaluated whether the implementation of devolved governance in the two counties has improved women's empowerment. The study's framework included an in-depth review of policy documents, official records, and reports from official websites to understand women's economic empowerment status in Nairobi and Kakamega. The study analyzed qualitative and quantitative data from County Integrated Development Plans and other secondary sources. Specifically, it examined compliance with the 30% gender rule, requiring women to hold at least 30% of all elective and appointive positions. The study found that Nairobi commands the largest share of formal sector wage employment in Kenya, and women's access to employment opportunities remains slightly lower than men in both counties. Despite implementing the 30% gender rule, the study revealed the need for more comprehensive policies that promote gender equality and women's economic empowerment in both Nairobi and Kakamega.

UČINKOVITOST PROVOĐENJA INKLUZIVNOG OBRAZOVANJA

Author(s): Šejla Smajić,Irmela Mujkić / Language(s): Bosnian Publication Year: 0

Inclusive education is an important term for modern educational reforms where enhancing inclusive education implies recognition of inclusion as a process in which the child is at the center of attention, as well as the empowerment and education of those who directly influence the education of children. The concept of inclusive education does not only concern the integration of children with special educational needs into a formal education system, but includes changes and modifications of content, approaches and strategies to ensure quality education for all children. In order to improve inclusive education in Bosnia and Herzegovina, there is a need to strengthen and educate those who work directly and influence the education of children. Thus, the goal of educational inclusion is not just to integrate children into regular schools, but to ensure the conditions in which their needs will be met. 296Although practices differ from school to school, regular education facilities are still difficult. In most schools, teachers still lack the necessary professional assistance in direct work with children, and the aggravating circumstances are also poor physical and material conditions, lack of individualized programs and didactic aids. The aim of this study was to examine attitudes and opinions of teachers and principals of primary schools when it comes to children with special educational needs, their education and how and in what way they are carrying the change that requires inclusive education. Respondents in the survey were educators from the area of Travnik municipality.

DJECA S TEŠKOĆAMA U RAZVOJU U ŠKOLAMA 21. VIJEKA

Author(s): Aldijana Omerović / Language(s): Bosnian Publication Year: 0

Education in the 21st century is not only focused on the use of new teaching tools but provides the opportunity for all children and children with disabilities to get a quality education. The purpose of education is to transform children’s lives to the better and to enable them, like other citizens, to enjoy in society. By educating, children achieve success, their self-esteem is raised so that they can develop the level of emotional resistance. The task of schools is to create a dynamic and innovative environment in which children with disabilities will be nurtured and formed with the goal of becoming active participants in the learning process.548This paper will show the mission and purpose of inclusive education in the 21st century, the benefits of inclusion, and how assistive technology can help students with disabilities, and how the teacher can help and contribute to the successful education of children. It was concluded that the attitude of the society towards children with difficulties until the 20th century was determined by various social and cultural factors that caused obstacles to the provision of education and prevented the inclusion of children with disabilities in all spheres of social life. The 21st century has enabled many changes, such as overcoming obstacles to inclusive education, new teaching methods and tools have been developed, and the use of assistive technology has contributed to improving life and eliminating learning difficulties in children with developmental disabilities. The purpose of this research is to provide basic information about education and to indicate that modern teaching methods and resources, then the adapted Curriculum and Program can successfully influence the education of children with developmental disabilities. The work will increase the awareness of the society about the education and acceptance of children with disabilities. The methods used in this work are the method of description, the method of analysis, while for the conclusion the inductive and deductive method is used.

VREDNOVANJE UČENIKA S TEŠKOĆAMA U PONAŠANJU: RAZLIKE S OBZIROM NA POHAĐANJE REDOVITOG I PRIMJERENOG OBLIKA ŠKOLOVANJA

Author(s): Nataša Vlah / Language(s): Croatian Publication Year: 0

The objectives of the paper were to find out, in students with difficulties, the relationship between school grades and attending classes based on a decision on appropriateform of schooling, and to analize whether the teachers' actions differ in evaluating the achievement of such pupils by the form of schooling. In 125 primary schools in Croatia, volunteer and anonymous self-assessments were conducted with the Scale of Educational Teaching Strategies (Kovacic & Vlah, 2018). Classteachers assesed their teaching with 1277students (N = 1026; Mage = 43; 86% women). It was a selected group of pupils from the first to the eighth grade that the classmates have detected behavioral difficulties, irrespective of the type of program they were attending, and subsequently a dichotomous variable was used to document theofficial solution of appropriate schooling (YES / NO). Two hypotheses were tested by a hi-quadratic test, discriminatory analysis, and frequency of fundamental results.30% of students in the sample have official solutions for an appropriate form of schooling. Proportionally, there are more pupils of very good and excellent success among those who lack the official document of appropriate form of schooling, and relatively there are more students who have sufficient and good success among those who have the official document of appropriate form of schooling. These two subgroups of disadvantaged students also differ in 23% variance regarding to the methods of evaluating their achievements in a way that teachers more often apply customized and individualized evaluating strategies to students with appropriate forms of schooling.Despite the fact that the teachers more often apply the customized forms of evaluation to students who have official document of appropriate form of schooling, the same students have weaker grades than students who do not have such documents. The results are discussed in the context of teacher competency for prescribed and recommended methods and techniques of appropriate evaluation and assessment as well as level and intensity of behavioral difficulties in pupils. Since our basic approach on the concept of protecting the fundamental human rights of every student for an appropriate form of education, it is essential that such research will be carried out further to determine the possibilities of improving the educational practice for students with a greater intensity behavior.

Другият списък: проучване на „добри практики за опазване“ и още добри идеи

Author(s): Michelle L. Stefano / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 2/2023

As UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage turns twenty, the article focuses on its primary aim of safeguarding people’s living cultural traditions, practices, and expressions at the local level. Safeguarding measures are promoted throughout the Convention and related texts, but it is arguably the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices through which actual approaches are presented as being put to the test. The article uses the Register as a launchpad for examining community-based approaches to safeguarding ICH, and distilling “good” considerations for building ethical and equitable collaborations – from the first steps of initiatives to over the long term.

Националната система „Живи човешки съкровища – България“ между съхраняването на фолклора и опазването на нематериалното културно наследство

Author(s): Iva Stanoeva / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 2/2023

This article reviews two co-existing and mutually conflicting concepts in Bulgaria: the one of folklore and the policies of its conservation in the course of the 20th century, and the one of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) and the efforts for safeguarding it following the adoption, in 2003, of the relevant UNESCO Convention. A comparison is made between the folklore festivals, characteristic of the second half of the 20th century, and the Living Human Treasures Bulgaria National System, created in 2008 as one of the fundamental cultural policies of the Republic of Bulgaria in this sphere, which has resulted in the compiling of the National Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Based on observations made during several of its consecutive iterations conducted so far, the article seeks to outline important aspects and issues of the rationalization of ICH and its safeguarding at the present moment. The author draws on her experience as a member of the team of scholars at the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IEFSEM – BAS), which has been participating actively at expert level in the implementation of the 2003 Convention in Bulgaria.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF TRUST AND POLICE PRESENCE IN SCHOOLS: IMPLICATIONS FOR SCHOOL SAFETY POLICY

Author(s): Bojan D. Janković,Vladimir M. Cvetković,Zvonimir M. Ivanović,Aleksandar Ivanov,Svetlana Jovanović,Božidar B. Otašević / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

The study aims to determine the trust and presence of police officers in schools in Serbia, as well as the perception of the principals and secretaries, teachers and staff, parents, and students on how successful the specific police units dedicated to schools were in fulfilling their tasks. The ex-post analysis was conducted through PEST/SWAT analysis, mapping the key actors and using batteries of online questionnaires, besides interviews with the MOI representatives, surveyed with personal interviewing, computer-aided surveying, desk analysis, and content analysis. The survey was conducted from September 2021 to June 2022. The research methods were implemented in 1140 schools in Serbia, and 8,617 people were included in surveys: police officers (308); principals and secretaries (1085); the team for protection against discrimination (982); teachers and staff (2988); parents (938) and students (2316). The relationships between the covariates and perception were investigated using the t-test, one-way ANOVA, multivariate linear regression, and binary regression. The results showed that a project of school police officers was not fully recognized as one of the strategically essential instruments for safe schools; trust is low, but presence is high. Besides that, the results suggest that the entire public believes that police are needed in schools and that it positively affects school safety. Regarding school safety policy, it is necessary to undertake three measures for the sustainable development of trust and the presence of police in school: regulatory, informative-educational, and institutional-organizational.

Afirmativne akcije za Rome u oblasti obrazovanja

Author(s): / Language(s): Serbian

Before you is a study of a practical policy - the policy of affirmative action for Roma in the field of education in Serbia. The Institute of Affirmative Measures is a relative novelty in our legal system. However, bearing in mind that, in various forms, affirmative measures have been implemented for seven years (2003-2009), it is extremely important to review the existing policy from the point of view of its effects on improving the educational position of the Roma and increasing the degree of inclusivity and cohesion of society as a whole. The introduction of the institution of affirmative actions into the legal system means that society recognizes the gap that exists between the protection of certain rights and the availability of those rights to marginalized and vulnerable groups, and represents efforts to ensure equal opportunities for all citizens. Consequently, improving the position of Roma increases the degree of stability and cohesion of society, which is a prerequisite for balanced development and well-being of all citizens of Serbia. The obligation of states to implement measures to ensure the realization of rights is woven into a series of international declarations and conventions of the United Nations and the Council of Europe, to which Serbia is also a signatory, and is also an integral part of the Europeanization process of Serbia, as improving the position of the Roma is one of the obligations from the European Partnership. In this study, starting from the purpose of affirmative actions - improving the position of the Roma population and increasing the level of inclusivity and cohesion of society - existing policies, legislative framework and institutions are analyzed, and the implementation and effects of existing measures are evaluated. The analysis is followed by concrete recommendations for the improvement of existing affirmative action measures in Serbia.
