Author(s): Przemysław Banasik,Sylwia Morawska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2019

Action Research (AR) is not only the research method or strategy but also the efficient tool supporting knowledge developmentand the introduction of changes in the organization. The aim of using AR is to induce changes in a given area or to convince theparticipants to initiate such changes, in a way that the researcher and the subject expert collaborate to diagnose the problemand find the solution to it. The cooperation of researchers, practitioners, and laymen is the primary assumption while applying the AR approach. The goal of such cooperation is to collect data derived from everyday practice systematically, to analyzethese that data and decide as for the future shape of that practice. The research presented in this paper has been carried outin a public organization, namely the District Court in Gdansk. It referred to the extrajudicial and pro-social activities of thatCourt. Such research aimed to bring the answer to the question of whether the courts as public organizations can undertakepro-social activities, and if yes – what should be the area of such actions. The research was carried out between June 2013 andMarch 2018, i.e., for almost five years. The research methods included: observations of the internal changes in the organization, interviews with the court management, conversations with different groups of stakeholders as well as a quantitative study of their opinions about the quality of thecooperation with that court. The analysis of the results confirms that firstly it is possible to apply the Action Research approachin public organizations, and secondly, that intervention resulting from the use of this research method is effective. It is worthto stress that the pro-social actions initiated by the research are continued despite the change in management of the court andsome political changes as well. One may say that those actions became a part of the organizational routine. The results achieved through that research supplement knowledge on the possibility of carrying out the pro-social actionsby the public organizations, in particular by courts. They fall within the scope of the strategic management discipline and thepublic administration sub-discipline.

The decision to focus the attention on this particular subject has been motivated by the significance of corporate responsibility of today’s service organizations, and the awareness that in their decision processes people are guided by the service provider’s brand image. It is important therefore to increase understanding of methodological activities undertaken by a service organization in pursuit of its desired brand image, and of possibilities to attain this goal by means of CSR undertakings. The methodology of conducted research spanned the diagnosis of the actual state of knowledge in the analysed area, review of available results of research, own research using the case study method, and meta-analysis of the Internet sources of information on the Orange CSR activities. Activities in the space that formalizes social responsibility from the perspective of completed research

Author(s): Michał Kapias,Grzegorz Polok / Language(s): English / Issue: 5/2018

Lately, the subject of responsibility has gained importance in the context of the economic crisis. In economy, it took the form of social responsibility. It concerns activities additionally undertaken by organizations in order to establish correct relations with their employees and society, as well as with regard to the natural environment. Therefore, a very important role is played by the ethos of the undertaken socially responsible actions. To a large extent, it is reflected in the ethical dimension. Thus, in enterprises, codes of ethics have become a base of axiology in the building of the organizational cultures. Unfortunately, Polish companies—as shown in the paper—still attach a lesser role to the ethical dimension of business.

Activity of German sports (football) enterprises and Corporate Social Responsibility

Author(s): Artur Grabowski / Language(s): English / Issue: 7/2018

At the turn of the 1920s and 1930s, a new economic doctrine called ordoliberalism was born in Germany. The foundations of this doctrine were values such as responsibility, solidarity, justice, and freedom. Classics of ordoliberalism formulated a number of recommendations and requirements for businesses in their writings. One of them was the public responsibility, which had the private-economic and socio-economic nature. In Germany sports’ (football) enterprises functioning in the form of companies and associations are participants in the sports-economic competition in the two professional leagues (1.Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga). At the same time sports enterprises pursue different aims: among the economic goals, there are also the social goals. In the structures of sports enterprises, there are several departments dealing with CSR and implementation of partnership projects. The article concludes that 1) the constitutive elements of ordoliberalism had an influence on the functioning of sports (football) enterprises in Germany, 2) the projects realized under the social responsibility rule that were undertaken by sports companies were strongly related to sports education, environmental protection, and social exclusion.

AFRICANITY AND THE POLITICS OF AFRICAN XENOPHOBIA: A STUDY OF TWO PARALLELS

Author(s): Olawale Olufemi Akinrinde / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2020

The search for sustainable home-made solutions to both internal andexternal challenges especially the colonialist and neocolonialist epistemologiesas well as the Eurocentric construction of African history that Africa is facedwith has, in part, led to the call and coining of the concept of Africanity. Whilethis call has, on several occasions, been racially discredited by the West, it hasnow assumed a pivotal space in Africa’s developmental agenda. Again, whileefforts geared towards the re-awakening of the consciousness and belief in theAfrican Indigenous system and its capacity to spearhead the much desired goalof Africa’s development continue to be intensified, the recent manifestations ofthe xenophobic attitudes in Africa now negates the spirit of Africanity and thegoal of a united Africa, consequently posing a major hindrance to Africa’sdevelopment. Findings have however shown that the concept and propagation ofAfricanity in the wake of the xenophobic experience in Africa is largelyparadoxical. It has been observed that Africans are equally neck-deep in whatthis concept is set out to achieve. As a corrective response to the racist and sexistontology of the West, it has paradoxically failed to illuminate the trueAfricanness of Africans in contemporary racist, sexist and xenophobic Africa.Consequently, this paper concludes that the whole concept of Africanity incontemporary Xenophobic Africa is paradoxical.

Age and Work Experience as Antecedents of Ethical Decision Making of Managers: Nigerian Experience

Age and Work Experience as Antecedents of Ethical Decision Making of Managers: Nigerian Experience

Author(s): Joy Chimebere Iyiegbuniwe,Wilfred C Iyiegbuniwe / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2018

Cognitive moral development theory posits that an individual’s cognition, emotion and judgment changes as one move through stages of moral development. Age and work experience have been suggested as determinants of ethical ideology which in turn influences ethical behavior. This study examined age and work experience as antecedents of ethical decision making of managers. Ethical judgment and ethical intention were used to measure ethical decision making. The findings indicate that older managers are not necessarily more ethical than younger managers. But the evidence demonstrated further that more experienced managers are more ethical than less experienced managers. It can be concluded that work experience rather than mere age is the real antecedent of ethical behavior. Further analyses showed that this conclusion may be due to the evidence that more experienced managers are more idealistic and less relativistic than less experienced managers

Aktualne problemy i zagrożenia związane z obrotem dobrami kultury na rynku sztuki w Polsce z perspektywy prawnej ochrony zabytków

Author(s): Wojciech Szafrański / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2019

This article presents the art market in Poland with a focus on existing problems and potential threats to its transparency. The Polish art market is young and therefore vulnerable when it comes to globally occurring trends and shifts. However, there are some trends that are typical for the Polish realm, such as the existence of non-professionals who are connected to the cultural sector because of their profession (art historians, monuments conservators, museum collaborators, journalists) and act successfully as middlemen. Diminishing risks and mitigating threats is possible with an introduction of new legal regulations and future art market self-regulation. In this regard, applicable international and European legal instruments must be taken into account.

Aktywność zawodowa kobiet z niepełnosprawnością w Polsce

Author(s): Dorota Kobus-Ostrowska,Bogusława Dobrowolska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 3.1/2019

The aim of the article is to identify the factors determining the professional activity of people with disabilities, with particular emphasis on the situation of women. The implementation of the objective was made possible by comparing people of working age andthe population of people with disabilities, taking into account the gender criterion. The empirical analysis was based on Central Statistical Office [GUS] data from Labour Force Survey [BAEL] and Eurostat data. The theoretical analysis, however, was made in the light of selected theories of the labour market, i.e. the theory of human capital, the DMP model, the theory of penchant for discrimination, and the crowding hypothesis. The conducted research proves that professional activity of people with disability is effectively limited by the following issues: worse health, lower education, job seniority, costs incurred by a person with disability if he or she is looking for a job, as well as the amount of benefits and time of unemployment and the range of subsidies available to employers. Hence, the question appears– is the situation of women with disabilities much harder on the labor market than that of men?

Amartya Kumar Sen’s ethical interpretation of poverty

Amartya Kumar Sen’s ethical interpretation of poverty

Author(s): Damian Szymczak / Language(s): English / Issue: 6/2017

On the threshold of the 21st century, the problem of poverty remains unresolved. Many still suffer from hunger, and many more have no access to running water, or education. This raises a fundamental question that has bothered economy researchers for centuries: What determines the wealth of some countries, and the poverty of others? One of the contemporary researchers analysing the causes of poverty and development barriers is Indian economist Amartya Kumar Sen. Referring to the socio-economic theory of Sen, the author indicates that modernity implies the need for reflection on the definition of poverty. The author attempts to justify the thesis which focuses on the discord between the evaluation concepts of good and evil with objective economic factors defining poverty. The author suggests that the definition of poverty should be grounded in considerations concerning good and evil in a specific time, as well as cultural and historical context.
