Shaping the Key Competencies for Romanian HEIs’ Teachers in Using Gamification as Innovative Tool in Education: MEDIIA Project Experiments

Author(s): Gabriela Marchis / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The regular training of teachers on the latest developments in the ICT-assisted education sector is becoming a necessity, generated by the digital revolution and driven by the pandemic crisis. Among the current technological opportunities to improve the quality of the learning process and to make it more flexible in direct correspondence with the training needs and with the personal pace of learning, we find gamification. Improving teaching methods as well as the curriculum, especially by implementing gamification techniques in the teaching process, requires a high level of digital literacy among teachers so that they can (re)design their educational materials in digital format. This was achieved within the Danubius University of Galati (Romania), through the MEDIIA project (project code POCU/320/6/21-122859) carried out between 2019-2021, a project that will be the subject of the case study of this paper.

Developing the European Villages in the Republic of Moldova taken into account the Digital Economy Society Index (DESI)

Developing the European Villages in the Republic of Moldova taken into account the Digital Economy Society Index (DESI)

Author(s): Anatolii BABIN,Tatiana Colesnicova,Sergiu TUTUNARU / Language(s): English Issue: 02/2023

The digital competitiveness of regions of EU member states is measured by the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), a composite index summarizing the progress made in connectivity, digital skills, internet use by citizens, digital integration of enterprises, farms and digital public services, while at the local government level there is currently no single indicator measured on a regular basis. Based on recent international and national researches, it can be concluded that with the development of digital technology, a significant increase in services and solutions available to citizens digitally is expected. Recent positive experiences of EU member states, which have been analyzed in previous research papers, show that the creation of jobs in agricol sectors in rural areas contributes to increasing household incomes. The objective of our study is to analyze and implement the methods and data sources for calculating DESI indicators at the level of local administrative units in the Republic of Moldova, in the context of the National Program for the European Village, launched in spring 2022. The results of the study will be the development of recommendations for local administrations on the use of the DESI index to coordinate the European evaluation parameters. The value of this work is in reinforcing activities for localisation of smart infrastructure and spatial data taking in consideration the DESI index and innovative products of the national Innovation Centres in innovative economics, stimulating investments in the creation of Smart Villages.

Weathering the Storm: The European Union’s Strategic Ambiguity on Twitter during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Weathering the Storm: The European Union’s Strategic Ambiguity on Twitter during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Author(s): Pablo Moral / Language(s): English Issue: 12/2023

This study examines how the European Union (EU) employed strategic ambiguity as a discursive resource to manage its reputational crisis during the COVID-19 pandemic. For that purpose, this research analyses tweets in English published by six central authorities of the EU in three different phases of the COVID-19 crisis (pre-crisis, acute crisis, and post-crisis). The findings reveal that during the early stages of the pandemic, characterised by higher uncertainty, European authorities often resorted to ambiguous tweets through vague metaphors, opaque information, and disjointed messages. By the end of the first COVID-19 wave these authorities progressively constructed a solid narrative that rationalised the pandemic as a challenge reaffirming the EU’s principles and capacities. This study suggests that when the EU faced more external criticism and inner discord among member states, its authorities resorted to ambiguity to strategically mitigate its reputational damage while navigating through conflicting interests in a high-pressure scenario.

Author(s): Roxana-Daniela Păun / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

In the current context, but especially the future one, in which a series of crises is taking shape more and more clearly, which specialists from different fields, theorists or practitioners, researchers and the academic environment have warned that they will be established with certainty in the coming years, it becomes a priority for Romania to reposition itself in the single European market, but also in the global economy. An analysis of the relationship between the hardships of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, family functioning, depression and internet addiction among 11-16 year olds

An analysis of the relationship between the hardships of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, family functioning, depression and internet addiction among 11-16 year olds

Author(s): Piotr Hreciński,Roman Solecki / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The aim of the presented research was to analyze mutual correlations between hardships related to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, family relations, depression and Internet addiction. The study was conducted remotely among 509 adolescents aged 11-16. The survey questionnaire was constructed from standardized research tools. The results showed that depressive symptoms correlated positively with staying in compulsory quarantine/isolation. In addition, depressive symptoms and Internet addiction positively correlated with experienced hardships during the pandemic (relationship difficulties with loved ones at home and increased number of daily responsibilities) and negatively with good quality family relationships. A reciprocal correlation was also observed between symptoms of depression and Internet addiction. Most interestingly, the results indicated that difficulties associated with the pandemic period correlate heterogeneously with depression and Internet addiction. It seems that the pandemic itself was not the most important factor generating depression and addiction, but reinforced already existing problems. The best protective factor was found to be well-functioning family relationships.

LOCAL BOY GOES GLOBAL: THE SEA SHANTY TO THE RESCUE

Author(s): David Livingstone / Language(s): English Issue: 29/2023

This paper will look at how the grungy, old-fashioned, lowly sea shanty has become the unlikely hero of the Covid-19 pandemic, bringing people together globally and generating both community and creativity. Sea shanties, providing comfort and entertainment for sailors while at sea, far from their loved ones, became an odd bedfellow in this current day and age, as we counted the days for normal life to resume again. This phenomenon can serve as a template for other activities of this kind, using music and performance to combat isolation and loneliness.

APP-BASED RIDE SERVICES AND THE SUSTAINABILITY OF METERED TAXIS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Author(s): Siphokazi NONYUSA,Robertson Khan Tengeh,Gervase Chux IWU,Darlington Peter Onojaefe / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2022

Developments in technology have disrupted many industries. Companies can no longer afford to ignore such vital technology. Many people in South Africa believe that the entry of ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt threatens the future of the country's traditional taxi industry. The paper sought to ascertain the influence of app-based ride solutions on the sustainability of conventional metered taxis and the ensuing survival strategies. A hybrid approach using both qualitative and quantitative data was adopted. Twenty participants and 80 respondents provided the qualitative and quantitative data utilized. The results suggest high-quality services and comfort vehicles offered by app-based services like Uber and Bolt have harmed the long-term viability of traditional metered taxis in the Cape Town metropolitan area. Since the advent of app-based ride services (Uber and Bolt), metered taxi operators have faced new challenges, including technological advancement, the demand for high-end transportation, and changing consumer tastes. The research could be helpful to companies providing metered taxi services in Cape Town by pointing to ways to improve operations. Hopefully, the findings of this research will aid regulators and other interested parties in making it easier for taxi companies that use meters to compete. Theoretically, the study may also contribute to the literature on the subject.

Mobile Augmented Reality Applications in Higher Education

Mobile Augmented Reality Applications in Higher Education

Author(s): Sebastian Vaida,Gabriel-Alexandru Pongracz / Language(s): English Issue: 23/2022

Visual technologies such as AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality), or MR (Mixed Reality) show an increase in popularity in the educational field. In addition to the fact that they can significantly improve the transfer of information in education, they can turn lessons into more interesting and interactive activities. Among these technologies, AR has become the most accessible, due to the rise in the popularity of mobile devices. The increasing popularity of distance teaching and the increasing performance of mobile devices and applications will make this topic an important one in the future in educational psychology. The current study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using AR in learning and compare it with classical 3D models. Following the calculations, we discovered a minor influence. This implies that the group of students who used simple 3D outperformed the group of students who used Assemblr AR, but the gap between the 2 learning methods was not very wide. The results indicate that the use of 3D models is effective in learning but there is no significant difference between the AR and normal 3D models. The limited effects and the findings of other studies on AR in education imply that additional research is required.

„Wkluczeni” w sieć – wykluczeni z wolności. Partycypacja cyberprzestrzeni w wymiarze czasu

Author(s): Katarzyna Borawska-Kalbarczyk / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2023

The issue of the text focuses on the description of changes in the way of experiencing time by people involved in digital technologies. The article discusses the causes and consequences of new forms of human location in contemporary space-time, which is shaped and modified by modern technologies. The author puts forward the thesis that the attachment of a contemporary individual to virtual space can be treated as a kind of enslavement, considered in the dimension of time. Young people, whose childhood and adolescence were shaped under the influence of dynamically developing digital technologies, were chosen as the subject of the analysis. The issue of time is analyzed in the background of the current culture, which is called “the culture of the present”. The new quality of time can be assessed as captivating due to the speed imposed on man by the rapid progress of new technologies. The text also presents ways of rational time management in the digital world (in the ecology of time trend). This trend draws attention to the threats and dimensions of the enslavement of modern man resulting from excessive haste. It promotes the need to limit the dominance of social time and respect natural time.

The Influence of Media in Constructing and Deconstructing Political Imagery

The Influence of Media in Constructing and Deconstructing Political Imagery

Author(s): Maria-Magdalena Lăpădat / Language(s): English Issue: 76/2022

Mass-media and the internet have long surpassed their meagre prerogative as being just a simple purveyor of information, transitioning towards its new objectives of establishing trust, influence and even intimidation or control in its relation with its citizens, with the receivers of what is now strategic and weaponised information. The media is no longer a vector of objectivity, nor does it formulate that assertion any longer. Media conglomerates have become quite outspoken in embracing or rejecting one ideology or the other, one candidate or the other. Therefore, objectivity has been abandoned to the detriment of subjective purpose. Major media players will choose to either carefully construct the positive image of a candidate or a party while at the same time, often viciously and unjustifiably, attacking the opposite candidate or the rival political movement. Simply supporting one candidate is no longer the norm and the socalled dirty adds and biased reporting of our contemporary political era expose an intricate mechanism that, however, has a simple purpose, namely, to lower certain percentages and elevate others in terms of public perception and favourability.
