The Fantastic and the Real: Fairy-Tale Films in the 21st Century

The Fantastic and the Real: Fairy-Tale Films in the 21st Century

Author(s): Daniel Compora / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

This article provides a critical examination of Pauline Greenhill’s monograph, Reality, Magic, and Other Lies: Fairy-Tale Film Truths (2020) and situates it within her larger body of scholarship. The title reflects the contradictory nature of fairy tales, which often contain moral and social truths beneath their fictional surfaces. Though related to her previous work, this book represents a departure from her earlier collections. Here, she provides close readings of various films, employing a sophisticated and detailed analysis of film techniques, and supplying a relevant social commentary. She asserts that fairy-tale films are multi-layered works that do more than simply convey aesthetically pleasing imagery. She breaks downs scenes into minute details, and occasionally provides diagrams that allow readers to understand and visualise scenes of films that, perhaps, they have not even seen. While these characteristics are present in her previous works, here they coalesce to form a perspective that reflects in a detailed way Greenhill’s vision of fairy-tale films and situates it within the larger context of fairy-tale film studies.

Nowoczesność tradycyjnej humanistyki

Nowoczesność tradycyjnej humanistyki

Author(s): Grzegorz Leszczyński / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2021

Słownik polskiej bajki ludowej [A Dictionary of Polish Folktale], edited by Violetta Wróblewska (2019), draws on Aarne’s and Thompson’s methodology, and in relation to native studies – on Krzyżanowski’s structuralist approach. It also makes use of modern interpretative tools developed on the ground of cultural literary theory, anthropological folkloristics, narratology, ethnography, ethnolinguistics, and dialectology. Such diverse tools enabled a comprehensive interpretation of motifs, phenomena, conventions and genres of folktales, cultural, linguistic, and literary issues. The main goal of the project was the analysis of issues connected with Polish folktales: an interpretation of the most famous territorially diversified motifs written down in source documents from the 19th and 20th century, a comparative analysis of Polish folktales with European collections as well as the Bible and Christian tradition (e.g. lives of saints), and also an analysis of the presence of folktale motifs in non-folk texts and the phenomena of contemporary culture, especially popular and oriented towards children and young audiences.

Tezaur şi Iconostas al spiritualităţii populare româneşti

Tezaur şi Iconostas al spiritualităţii populare româneşti

Author(s): His Beatitude Daniel Patriarch of Romania / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2021

The Romanian village is the matrix where most spiritual, cultural, moral and identity values of the Romanian people have been shaped, preserved and passed down from generation to generation. Together, the constitutive elements of the Romanian rural life testify symbolically and tangibly to the tradition and the physical and spiritual continuity of the Romanian people. The Romanian village has always centered its preoccupations around the Church and around spiritual life. Romanian peasants, hardworking, dignified and endowed by God with natural intelligence, have been constantly attached to the Church, which guided them along the path to salvation. The rural population perceives the Church as the institution that has permanently provided children and youth with support in their intellectual formation, has taught people to offer each other mutual support, and has piously remembered and prayed for the ancestors. „Dimitrie Gusti” National Museum of the Village, established in 1936, offers insights into traditional Romanian rural life, and possesses a unique collection of monuments of architecture. The Romanian village, as presented by the museum, demonstrates skillful, artful use of wood, stone and natural materials in general, which evinces the harmonious relationship between the Romanian craftsmen and the environment, and their awareness of the beauty and worth of God’s creation, which they cultivated with diligence, generosity and gratitude (...). Thanks to the joint efforts undertaken by the Romanian Patriarchate and „Dimitrie Gusti” National Museum of the Village in Bucharest, rural traditions and village spirituality, Romanan folk art, the beauty of the popular costumes as well as folklore at large, were presented to the public, underscoring the need to preserve the legacy of our ancestors and the importance of passing it down to the younger generations (...). Today, 10 May 2021, on the 85th anniversary of „Dimitrie Gusti” National Museum of the Village we acknowledge the vocation, mission and outstanding activity of this museum, which we see as a Treasure and Iconostasis of Romanian People’s Spirituality. In an increasingly secularized world, which tends to replace eternal spiritual values with ephemeral materialistic undertakings, it is our duty to know and foster the perennial values of Romanian culture, identity and spirituality.

Cuvântul bun luminează comunicarea

Cuvântul bun luminează comunicarea

Author(s): His Beatitude Daniel Patriarch of Romania / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2021

In the context of the pandemic, social networks proved to be a very useful missionary and pastoral means since, for a long time, the faithful could not physically participate in church services. Thus, the online streaming of services was a spiritual consolation, a source of peace and joy, especially since many people suffered from loneliness, anxiety, the uncertainty of tomorrow, fear of illness and death (…).Through the live-streaming church services, the period of solitude and uneasiness was transformed into one of hope and communion, the faithful waiting with great responsibility and trust in God for the moment of actual liturgical participation, which we enjoy today. The World Social Media Day, celebrated on June 30 every year, is an opportunity to congratulate all those who use social platforms to promote people’s good words and deeds, not to generate conflicting and offensive conversations. In this sense, the Saviour Jesus Christ exhorts us with these words: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5, 16).Therefore, let us use social networks with discernment and responsibility in the spirit of solidarity, respect and love of fellow human beings, according to the words of the Saint Apostle Paul: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (Philippians 2, 3-4).
