The book addresses one of the fundamental topics of social policy: the labour market and social dialogue. It includes experiences from various European countries and the comparison thereof, as well as the more general definition of long-term trends in this area. The book endorses the approach of the publishing institution (the International Labour Organization) in a positive sense: it presents the various tools and procedures involved in social dialogue with the aim of ensuring a well-functioning labour market under changing conditions. The book can, therefore, be recommended to readers who are interested in employment policy and the labour market in general, as well as to representatives of the various interest groups and participants in the collective bargaining process.

This anthology constitutes one of the outputs of a conference of professionals held on the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms by the Czechoslovak Federal Assembly. Editor Jan Kudrna worked with more than twenty texts compiled by elite lawyers who have commented on, evaluated and explained the Charter from the viewpoints of their respective legal specialisations. This intelligently compiled and high standard publication presents the Charter not only as a legal-theoretical phenomenon, but also as a practical document that is important in terms of the functioning of society as a whole. It can be recommended especially to those who are interested in human rights issues and those who have closely followed the political events of recent decades.

The review article deals with David Svoboda’s monograph Jablko z oceli. Zrod, vývoj a činnost ukrajinského radikálního nacionalismu v letech 1920–1939 (Apple of Steel: The Birth, Development, and Activities of Ukrainian Radical Nationalism in 1920–1939. Academia – Ústav pro studium totalitních režimů, Praha 2021). This extremely comprehensive book on the history of Ukrainian radical nationalism in the interwar period is definitely a pioneering work in the Czech context. The author has made use of a large amount of literature and archival sources, yet he has not avoided several shortcomings, which are the subject of detailed analysis. The author takes an apologetic approach to his topic and defends the Ukrainian nationalists in an undisguised manner. On the contrary, he resigns to set clear research questions. Far from always adhering to strict standards of scholarship, the author’s book is often more akin to a polemical essay. Despite these shortcomings, it is undoubtedly an important contribution to scholarly debate.

The urban history is a research area which eludes classical historiography and gives romm for many interesting phenomena. One of them are “biographies of cities”, which means the way of writing about about an urban history that imitates the biographies of famous people. Marcin Szymański made an attempt to write a biography of Łódź. This article assesses whether the researcher associated with the Institute of History at the University of Lodz has fulfilled this task well or not. Secondly, the place of M. Szymański’s book in the literature on Łódź and its usefulness as a source of knowledge about the city’s past were also analyzed here. Finally, strengths and weaknesses of the reviewed book were pointed out.

The article is a polemic with Jacek Perzyński’s book Secrets of Łowicz and Skierniewice. The author of the book, contrary to the title, does not present the secrets of Łowicz and Skierniewice. Out of 34 articles in the book, 12 are about Łowicz and only 10 about Skierniewice. The other articles describe interesting facts from the surrounding area. When preparing the book, the author mainly used studies and popular science texts written by local researchers. He used historical sources occasionally, therefore mistakes and errors appear in the book. The book is written in good language, but its layout is chaotic.

Japanese historian Fujii Kazuo, for four decades has been taking up topics related mainly to various aspects of the nineteenth-century history of Lodz, and above all, he is concerned with the different development of this urban center during the partitions not only in Poland, but also in Central and Eastern Europe. Many years ago he devoted his first monograph to this subject, and the currently reviewed book, is a kind of summary of the research work of this Japanese researcher of social and economic history at the time of his retirement. According to his thesis, Lodz, which did not have noble traditions and did not play the role of a political center such as Warsaw, in the 19th century, together with the capital of the Kingdom of Poland, became a great city, unique in the scale of the Russian partition. The dynamism of the development of modern industry in it was the enormous activity of local entrepreneurs, mainly of German and Jewish origin, who, however, permanently penetrated the fabric of the city, creating their “little homeland”.
