The history of ethnology and linguistics was enriched by the two outstanding Russian scholars F.A. Braun and N.J. Marr. In early 20s, professor Braun using revolutionary Japhetic theory by academician N.J. Marr tried to take a new view on the problem of the German ethno-genesis. This article focuses on history of relationships between the two colleagues at the turning-point of the modern Russian history. As Marr’s doctrine developed, turning more and more aggressive and unsubstantiated within the framework of the traditional linguistics, Braun started distancing from Japhetidology. Severance of relations between the two scholars proved to be inevitable.

Leningrad Neo-Normanizm as a direction in Soviet archaeology (mid-1960s—2000s) started its development in the general context of the evolution of social consciousness in the last decades of the Soviet Union. In 1970s—1980s, this direction pretended to generalize research results on early Medieval sites from a vast territory of Eastern Europe. In modern Russia, Leningrad Neo-Normanism quickly loses its relevance. The main lesson of Leningrad Neo-Normanism is that archaeology of the Early Rus' is still a historical archaeology. Contestation of its ideas undertaken by supporters of the South-Baltic hypothesis about the emergence of statehood in Early Rus' also leads to a deadlock, for it does not address the uncertainty of chronicle accounts, which underlie both directions.

The correspondence between one of the founders of the Russian archaeology Vasiliy Alexeevich Gorodtsov (1869—1945) and David Natanovich Lev (1905—1969), an archaeologist from Leningrad, has brought to us valuable information about the history of the Institute of Anthropology and Ethnology in the 1930s. This information adds a lot to what we knew from published and archived official documents. As early as 1970 P. I. Boriskovsky and A. P. Okladnikov noted that V. A. Gorodtsov’s and D. N. Lev’s letters to each other “would undoubtedly serve as an important sourse for every historian of the Russian archaeology”. The letters reflect feelings and psychology of both scholars, as well as their attitudes towards various events that took place in social and academic life. The texts are reproduced after the originals stored in the Department of Written Records of the State Historical Museum.

Az Ókortudományi Társaság az Oktatási Minisztérium támogatásával a 2000. évben is megrendezte országos tanulmányi versenyét. A milleniumra, illetve bimilleniumra tekintettel a verseny szervezôbizottsága elhatározta, hogy idén elsô alkalommal az országos verseny szervezeti keretein belül külön versenyt hirdet meg a latin nyelvet elsô éve tanuló legfiatalabb korosztály számára. A szervezôbizottságot e döntésében több érv is motiválta.

Phanagoria is the “capital of the Asian Bosporus”, one of the largest ancient cities on the territory of the Russian Federation. Archaeological investigations on this ancient center began with the excavation of one of the mounds of Phanagorian necropolis in 1798, under G. van der Weide’s leadership. In this barrow, a big tomb was discovered, containing several black-lacquered vessels and a gold bracelet. This is the only gold find known to modern researchers, which was discovered during the excavations at the end of the 18th century on the territory of Phanagoria. The bracelet was sent to the Hermitage in early nineteenth century, however, due to a mistake in documentation made in 1937, it has been referred to as ‘stray find’ so far, and, therefore, has been outlooked by the modern Bosporan researchers. During the recovery into circumstances of its discovery and typological and chronological features of the bracelet allowed to conclude that the gold bracelet belonged to a secondary inhumation of the Great Migrations, made either in a crypt of the Hellenistic period, or in the mound.

The paper points out the Poles' interest in ancient Greek culture. Since the mid-nineteenth century Polish trips to Greece have changed their profile. Poles began to take part in archeological excavations and travelled to Greece by scholarships and research grants. It broadened the interest in ancient culture among the population of partitioned Poland. What made possible such scholar travels and expeditions was the rise of modern Greek state, which allowed several european archeological stations to operate on its territory. In Athens there were outposts of German and Austro-Hungarian scientific institutions which also attracted Polish researchers.A few dozens can be figured as the most probable evaluation of the number of Polish travellers to Greece in the 2nd half of the 19th and in the beginnings of the 20th centuries. Having returned from their trips they published studies and reports which popularized ideas of Ancient Greece and the Greek Islands.
