Economic success is just one of the aspects of human activity and one of elements that makes up the value which is his freedom. Liberties and values on which Europe is based upon cannot exist in a form different than the form to which we are accustomed and in which we brought up. Preserving the values can be done only through recognition of the primacy of ethics and human. Progress, economics or politics cannot become a substitute for the values of the man of today and the man of future. Ethics requires adjusting systems to the requirements of realizing man himself, and humanity which is exposed to the process of globalization is forced to create a new common code of ethics. Europe, if wanting to keep its Position in the surrounding world, must be aware of their roots, history, culture and values that have shaped it.

From its beginning the Catholic Church is condemning the act of the termination of pregnancy. Such an act is immoral and it is a sin joined with the punishment of excommunication. This punishment concerns the woman who tries to stop pregnancy and the people who persuade her to do so. In spite of many objections, the right of every innocent human being to live is not respected. It is connected with the problem of agreement when the embryo becomes a human being. The baby is treated as an object, as “something that makes life difficult”. Abortion has a long history and has been induced by various primitive and cruel methods. With the technological development various methods of abortion appeared. Nowadays they can be divided into two groups pharmacological and surgical. Abortion will never be accepted and treated as moral good even if it is done by innovational methods. None of the circumstances that forced the woman to the termination of pregnancy will justify her behavior. Such an interference into her body brings with itself both psychological and physical consequences that might be the source of evil. In order to avoid these alarming phenomenon we should take care of human life and do everything to make it intact. All these actions will help in creating the civilization of love and life and avoiding the civilization of death.

The article discusses the problem of the place the Wąchock monastery occupies in the local collective memory, drawing on the field research carried out in Wąchock in July 2013. The research shows that the present-day place of the monastery’s heritage in the local collective memory is connected with the post-dissolution annexation and socialization of the monastery complex in its material and symbolic dimension, pursued by the local community (but also by institutions from outside). It is also partially the result of the interaction between the Cistercians (the abbey understood as a religious community) with the environment, or, to be more precise, their being open to the previously initiated process of socialization of the monastery space as an important place for the local community, as well their reinforcing this process by actively enriching the symbolic capital of the monastery with elements of the national memory and independence traditions.

Professor Krešimir Filić is doubtlessly one of the most prominent and versatile public and cultural figures in Varaždin in the 20th century. Despite his many fields of expertise, he was primarily a teacher at Gimnazija – Varaždin, where he worked from 1917 to 1942. Due to the fact that the mentioned period witnessed some important social and political changes, their reflections were quite prominent in the education sector, especially in the teaching of the so-called national subjects group, which was taught by Filić. Along with his educational activity, as well as his engagement with the historical and geographic scientific collection, Filić also took part in the preparation of cultural and artistic programs and the organization of professional and educational lectures for students. He organized and was in charge of numerous school excursions and field trips. Furthermore, he enticed and helped student associations’ activities and was fostering the high-school „Home and School Association“. As an active researcher of the history of Gimnazija – Varaždin, one of his most memorable and noteworthy scientific and organizational endeavours was the organization of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of Gimnazija – Varaždin.

The essay attempts to reconstruct the picture of the Roma people as drawn in the work of Andrzej Stasiuk, a well-known and extremely influential contemporary Polish writer. His books are one of the major sources of information about, among other things, the Romani population of Central-East Europe. Starting from the theory of critical discourse analysis, the author of the essay shows that Stasiuk's imagination of the Gypsy world is based on dangerous and dominant stereotypes which could be compared to racist and apartheid ideologies.

Universal, a concept describing a point of view about the state of things, is, first of all, related to values. The values themselves are ideas taken over by as wide as possible human groups: ideas which thus are criteria for other appreciations and actions. And because the coherence of the human society requires the assumption of common criteria, they are created and moved so that they are taken over by as many people as possible. Thus, values are universal: certainly, in different degrees according to the size of social groups taking them over. This is the reason of the important activity of humans to educate, form, and influence their species fellows according to some ideas which they consider values.
