Demiryolunun Stratejik Önemi ve Erken Cumhuriyet Döneminde Demiryolu Siyaseti

Author(s): M. Serhan Yücel,M. Murat Taşar / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 1/2016

The study examines the strategic importance of the railroads and the phases that railroads went through in the Late Ottoman - Early Republican periods. This process, beginning with the invention of the wheel, went on with the horse carts and the invention of steam engines after 17th century extended it into the vehicles going on the rails. Although the Ottoman Empire was late to build railroads because of its financial and technical problems, she started to construct railways after giving privileges to foreign companies. The drawbacks of the policy adopted by giving privileges were seen clearly in the period after the Armistice of Mudros. The main focuses of this study are on the geopolitical importance of the railroads, the strategic military purposes of the railroads (such as deployment of soldiers and transportation of supplies and armored trains) and the railroads in the Ottoman Empire and in the Early Republican period. Besides, the phases of railroads are included in this analysis.

The Ottoman empire, Byzantium and Western Christianity the implications of the siege of Belgrade, 1456

Author(s): Pál Fodor / Language(s): English Issue: 1-2/2008

The siege of Nándorfehérvár/Belgrade, the key stronghold of the southern defence system of mediaeval Hungary, was not an “ordinary” battle between the Ottomans and Hungarians; rather, it was a decisive clash which essentially influenced the subsequent history of Europe and Islam. As such, it can be seen as a symbolic point of contact and impact of three “civilisations”: the Ottoman/Islamic, the Byzantine (which by then had been largely incorporated into the former) and the Latin common-wealths. The importance of the Ottoman threat notwithstanding, only the remains of the Latin respublica christiana attempted to halt the conquerors’ intent of devouring the entire respublica . By their victory, the defenders rendered enormous service to the entire Latin world by allowing it to pursue its history by its own inner logic rather than by the logic of compulsions and threats such as those that governed Hungary.

Die Türkische Mission („Missio Turcica“) der Gesellschaft Jesu Im Osmanischen Ungarn

Author(s): Antal Molnár / Language(s): German Issue: 1-2/2008

The study presents the history of the Jesuit missions led to Ottoman Hungary, summarising the conclusions of the author’s earlier research. After long decades of a preparative phase, the Jesuits settled down in Ottoman Hungary in 1612. In the beginnings, the mission stood under the authority of the Austrian and Roman provinces. The southern stations, Belgrade (1612–1632) and Temesvár (Timişoara, 1632–1653) belonged to the latter province. The missions of Pécs (1612–1686–1773), Andocs (1642–1684), Kecskemét (1633–1635) and the residence of Gyöngyös (1633–1682–1773) worked under the authority of the Austrian provincial. The stations counted 2–3 Jesuits, whereas in Gyöngyös 3–6 religious were active at the same time. In spite of the low number of missionaries, the activity of the Jesuits had an inestimable impact on religious and cultural life as well as on the conservation of national identity. Stations assisted in the pastoral care of the local parishes led large-scale missions well beyond the boundaries of the parish and maintained schools. In Transdanubia, the Jesuits were practically the only priests who took spiritual care of the population. The Gyöngyös grammar school was the only institution of secondary education under Turkish occupation; it was attended also by students from the Hungarian Kingdom. The fathers brought the spirit of the European Catholic reform to the Ottoman territories.

József Rákóczi, the last Transylvanian pretender

Author(s): Sándor Papp / Language(s): English Issue: 1-2/2008

The Ottoman state wanted to regain the territories of Belgrade, Temesvár, the western part of Wallachia and possibly Transylvania, lost as a consequence of the peace-treaty of Passarowitz in 1718. The realisation of this aim seemed feasible when Sultan Mahmud I was at war with the Russian and Habsburg empires in the late 1730s. The Ottomans recognised that they needed the co-operation of Hungarians and a legitimate pretender or at least somebody who could be used in the political game of chess. This role was assigned to József Rákóczi, son of the last prince of Transylvania, Ferenc II Rákóczi, with whom they concluded an agreement on January 20, 1738. Rákóczi made serious efforts to gain the diplomatic support of the European states. His attempt to return to Hungary failed and he died of plague on November 10, 1738.

Scorched-earth tactics in Ottoman Hungary: On a controversy in military theory and practice on the Habsburg-Ottoman frontier

Author(s): Géza Pálffy / Language(s): English Issue: 1-2/2008

Scorched-earth tactics are as old as warfare itself. Throughout Europe military commanders of the Early Modern Age used them, as the Persians did against the attacking Ottomans. Accordingly, along with his fellow-generals, Lazarus Freiherr von Schwendi, one of the best-known German military theorists and commanders of the 16th century, repeatedly urged that scorched-earth tactics be introduced in the Habsburg Monarchy’s Hungarian theatre of war against the Ottomans, and that territories lost after the fall of Buda in 1541 be laid waste. Despite this, the systematic and widespread use of these tactics was rather rare in the areas of Hungary in which the Habsburg Monarchy and the Ottoman Empire faced each other during the 16th and 17th centuries. When they were chosen, they were employed only to a limited extent. While most of the pay of the soldiers serving in the border-defence system protecting Central Europe was provided by the Austrian, Bohemian and German provinces of the Habsburg Monarchy, a significant proportion of their food came from regions of Hungary that were under Ottoman sway. At the same time, these regions were not just a source of foodstuffs for those serving in the chain of fortresses built against the Ottomans, but also an area which offered economic opportunities to broad social strata in the Kingdom of Hungary (nobles, border-fortress soldiers and market town peasants), primarily in the spheres of cattle-breeding and trade. As a result of all this, the systematic laying waste of these territories conflicted with the fundamental interests of Hungarian society and Estates. The serious political conflicts that would have accompanied the use of scorched-earth tactics (whose consequences would in any event have been uncertain) were never invited by the Habsburg military and political leadership.

The journal Türk Derneğı and Hungarian studies of Turcology in the pre-World War I period

Author(s): Cuneyd Okay / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2007

Upon the restoration of the Constitution in the Ottoman State, on 23 July 1908, which guaranteed the freedoms of thought and associations, many non-governmental organisations were established. One of these was the Türk Derneği (Turkish Association). Founded to promote research into the language, literature, history and culture of the Turks and related fields, the Society also published a periodical under the same name. In addition to works of Turkish scholars, some of the best achievements of Hungarian Turcology were translated into Turkish and published in this journal. By doing so, both the Society and the journal considerably contributed to the emergence and flourishing of scientific and cultural co-operation between the two countries in the pre-World War I period.

Trade and traders in Hungary in the age of Ottoman conquest: An outline

Author(s): Pál Fodor / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2007

This short survey intends to be a certain kind of introduction to the studies published in this issue of Acta Orientalia . It was the present author who, in the late 1990s, raised the idea to publish a book which would tackle the problems of Hungarian trade in the age of Ottoman conquest (16th–17th centuries) in a comprehensive way. He asked the most renowned Hungarian specialists of the field to dwell on various aspects of the topic. Unfortunately, the project could not be accomplished in its entirety for a variety of reasons. Some colleagues, owing to pressure of other engagements, could not complete their studies, while others, like Ferenc Szakály, suddenly passed away. Particularly his death proved to be fatal, because it was him who undertook to write the most comprehensive contribution to our would-be book on trade and traders in Ottoman and Habsburg Hungary (including to a certain extent Transylvania too). Finally, those who prepared their studies decided to publish the collected material, benefiting from the kind offer by the editor-in-chief of Acta Orientalia . The texts were edited by the present author who in this article tried to outline what should have been written by Szakály in greater detail. He focuses on the fate of the Hungarian traders and, in line with Szakály’s results, he concludes that, while the 16th century, owing to the rapidly expanding transit trade, saw the emergence of a peasant-burgher middle class, the worsening circumstances in the following century led to its eventual fall. The causes of this fall are highlighted in much greater detail in the studies by Zsigmond Pál Pach (who also died in the meantime) and Lajos Gecsényi. From their contributions it becomes evident that in the long run the Ottoman conquest dealt a tremendous blow not only to the political, but also to the economic life of Hungary, inasmuch as the shifting of the international trade routes, the rise of rival commercial groups and the disadvantageous imperial policies gradually crowded out the Hungarians from their previous positions. The thorough study by Antal Molnár, dedicated to the activities in Hungary of two of these rival groups, the Ragusans and the Bosnian Franciscans, emphasises the interdependence between commercial and religious life of the Christians living in Ottoman Hungary and the Northern Balkans as well as the vital role the merchants played in shaping their “national”-religious communities. János Buza explores an important but neglected aspect of monetary history: how the great powers’ struggle for supremacy in Central Europe reflected itself in monetary politics. He points out that the Habsburg, Ottoman and Venetian governments supported the primacy of their respective currencies by setting their rates of exchange higher than those of their rivals. The above-mentioned project has been implemented by the generous support of OTKA, the biggest scientific research foundation of Hungary (No. T. 018025).

Kurds as spies: Information-gathering on the 16th-century Ottoman–Safavid frontier

Author(s): MUSTAFA DEHQAN,Vural Genç / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2018

Examining 16th-century Kurdish politics, particularly in the frontier districts between the Ottoman and Safavid Empires, aptly serves as a starting point for understanding Kurdish regional semi-autonomy. This paper, dedicated to the activities of Kurdish individuals involved in information-gathering on behalf of both the Ottoman and the Safavid Empires, is the first of its kind. The findings presented here are the result of close exploration in the Ottoman archives as well as detailed reading of a number of materials from Ottoman and Safavid chronicles. The paper discusses three main subjects. The introductory section briefly explains the methods and potentials of Kurdish spying as well as some of the particulars of Ottoman–Safavid espionage. The second section provides an overview of two famous Kurdish intellectual historians and the role each played in information-gathering. The third section discusses cases of espionage throughout the political careers of several Kurdish frontier emirs.

Firearms, since they first came into being, have had a continuous development. This development has been seen in methods of production as well as areas of use of weapons. In this process, most of the countries supported the production of new technology weapons in order to use them in their own army. On the other hand, the countries with limited production opportunities tended to import these weapons. Ottoman Empire which followed the developments in weapon technology tried to strengthen her army with advanced weapons after the middle of nineteenth century. It was in the same time that Ottoman Empire imported the machine guns which had first been used in American Civil War and proved their importance in Russian Japanese War later. No matter how different models of machine guns Ottoman Empire possessed, in course of time German Maxim became the major machine gun of her army. Despite possessing different models of machine guns during Balkan Wars, Ottomans lost the war in all fronts as a result of various reasons and weren’t able to use the opportunity of possessing this weapon technology. In this study, the status and use of machine guns in Ottoman Army during Balkan Wars will be touched upon.

Author(s): Ömer Aksoy / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 2/2018

Along with the Tanzimat, the restructuring of the language within the context of the Westernization issue and the simplification of it to make people able to understand in every way, is considered as one of the most important cultural issues of Turkish intellectuals. The idea of simplification of the Turkish language and its easier accession to the public within the scope of the New Language Movement initiated by the Genç Kalemler Magazine and those intellectuals gathered around this journal will turn into nationalist ideas in the Ottoman political life and ideas for the language unity and the use of the a common Turkish alphabet for those peoples speaking the same language. Ideas of simplification of the written language in the Tanzimat period were discussed by Bosniaks in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was part of the Ottoman Empire, and various studies were conducted on this subject. The oral culture products, which were recorded in Bosnia and Herzegovina in a way similar to Ziya Gökalp's through the people principle, led the intellectuals to determine the framework of Bosnian language. The Bosnian intellectuals worked on the reforming of the text language and the Arabic alphabet in order to simplify the Bosnian text language used by the Bosnian people and to preserve the spiritual unity with the Turkish society through the oral culture products written during the period of Austrian-Hungarian rule. This article aims to reveal and provide information about similar reform efforts that enable Bosnians to focus on oral culture in order to simplify language as an element of ethnic belonging and not to break spiritual bond with the geographies that have moral ties in terms of Turkish and Bosniak intellectuals in line with the Westernization objectives.

Regarding this work, the author is occupied with analysis of activity of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha, as historical source, very important for studies of the Balkans history. From comprehensive lists of works of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha, we abstracted the work „Teskere 18-19“, in which the author is occupied with the description of population of Skadar‘s Sandzak, which territory was extended to the representative part of present-day Montenegro and Albania. The work was probably made in the period of residence of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha in Skadar in 1861, and in such manner it should be served to the military strategists for measuring military capacity in the case of new war. This work was translated and published in German, and it was a basis for author to present this paper.

A Life on the Marches: The Career of Derviş Bey

Author(s): Géza Dávid / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2001

The life-story of Derviş bey can by reconstructed with unusal accuracy. He come from an influential family, the Yahyapaşazade clan of Albanian origin. His father Küçük Bali had a house in Jagodina. Derviş must have born around 1500 since he is mentioned as a timar-holder in the sancak of Zvornik as early as 1519. When his father became the beylerbeyi of Buda in 1542, Derviş was appointed commander of the Danube flotilla, a nem post created specifically for him. When Szeged was taken early in 1543, he was elected to be the first district governor there. On 28 najuary 1545. he was nominated sancakbeyi of Székesfehérvár (Istolni Belgrad). In late 1547 he was sent to administer the liva of Mohács. He held this office for almost 10 years, an exceptionally long period. His many duties can be illustrated by several hitherto unknown orders which were sent to him. At the same time, he did not forget Jagodina where he had a cami built and where – as Hans Dernschwam reported – he also settled some Hungarians. This is shown by a defter od Szendrő (Smederovo), in which several individuals with Hungarian names were registered. On February 1557, he was appointed to Avlonya, partly as a punishment for the unsuccesful siege of Szigetvár in 1556. Four days later, however, he was allowed to return to Szeged. As in Pécs, he was again charged whit the preparation of the new cadastral surveys of some of the Hungarian sancaks. Derviş bey vanishes from sight around 1560/1561. in all likelihood he died either in Hungary or on his way to Jagodina.
