A small number o sources still offer information that, in the last decade of the XVIII century, the Yegarian priest Petar Vitković translated the famous work of the Thessalonika jurist Constantin Armenopulos »Hexabybloss« in to the Serbian language by order of the Archbishop Stratimirović. Although this Serbian translation of the famous Vizantinian codex, unknown and virtually unrecorded in the Yugoslav literature of the history of law, has not been preserved, since the manuscript was burnt in Budapest in 1810, the author has made an attempt to analyse its legal and political significance, as well as the couse of its origin, on the basis of the scarce-direct and indirect- sources. Two groups of conditions can be distinguished as the possible motivation of the Serbian priests to decide upon this translation: firstly, clerical and legal factors; secondly, national and political factors. The disorderly and incomplete state of the Orthodox Canonian law, which was in use in the residence of the Archbishop, Karlovac, for the Serbian people in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, necessitated the systematic classification of especially the so-called authoritative church (clerical) sources. Whats more, the motive for this translation was also the necessity of the modernization of the Orthodox Church marriage and family law, simultaneously with the aspiration of preserving its authority. On the other hand, the translation of the Orthodox Vizantinian Codex, which at that time had been published in the new Greek and Bulgarian languages, and had successfully been in use among the Orthodox — religious people under the Otoman rule, was in agreement with the main policy of the Serbian Orthodoc Church clergy. That policy was, the struggle for the preservation of the Orthodox religion, the idea of national emancipation, and the discrete political inclination toward Russia. However, there are no absolutely verified facts to prove that there was also the aspiration inaugurate the implementation of Roman law in the process, and bring it closer to Austrian law, nor that it was the expression of the wish to enliven the Medieval Serbian State and legal tradition. The translation, however, does clearly represent an attempt to bring closer Greek and Vizantinian legal literature to the clerical and legal culture of the Serbian people in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the last decade of the XVIII century.

The paper presents the place of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast in the geography of religious contacts and conflicts in the 13th – 14th centuries. This area is characterized by ethnic and religious diversity. But the local ethnic and cultural appearance is determined by the Orthodox population – Bulgarians and Greeks. In the first part of the paper, the author presents the Venetian commercial activities in Varna, Messembria, Sozopol and Anhialo. In the 14th century, the West coast of the Black Sea was gradually caught up in Genoese trade expansion. That is why in the paper, the problem is posed about the role of the Italian colonies as a factor for Catholic propaganda in the Bulgarian lands in the 14th century. According to the author in this respect, Venetians and Genoese had limited influence. More significant factor were the Catholic bishoprics in the Black Sea area. Among them the bishopric of Kaffa (present Feodosia in Crimea) stood out where in 1317, a Latin prelate established himself. During same military conflicts on the Bulgarian Coast in the 14th century, separate cases of religious confrontation were observed. The paper also examines the role of the Orthodox episcopates and monasteries. In the 14th century, no elements of strong confrontation between Orthodox Christians and Catholics on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast could be traced. The conversion of particular individuals from Orthodoxy to Catholicism was due to concrete and extraordinary circumstances.

The main characteristic features of the Early Ottoman single-domed mosques are well known. This type of mosque was particularly widespread in the whole of the Anatolian region and the Balkans. A few Early Ottoman single-domed mosques are known from Bulgaria – the mosques in Yambol, Stara Zagora, Veliko Tarnovo, Kyustendil, Karlovo, etc. Among them, Eski Mosque in Yambol and Ahmet Bey Mosque in Kyustendil deserve special attention for their rare layouts. Despite that, the characteristic features that put them in the frame of the Early Ottoman period are not well illustrated. The analysis of their layouts, porticoes, positions of the minaret, building materials, etc. shows that the single-domed mosques from the Early Ottoman era in the Bulgarian lands followed the development of the general planning characteristics and constructional techniques of the period. The creation of rare types like Eski Mosque in Yambol and Ahmet Bey Mosque in Kyustendil, realized only a few decades earlier in North-West Anatolia, shows the connection between Anatolia and the Balkans.

This paper offers a reproduction, Bulgarian translation, and analysis of a previously unexplored account in the “Annals of the Ottoman Dynasty” by the Ottoman scholar Kemalpashazade (ca. 1468–1534). The text of the source concerns the relations between the anonymous Byzantine lord of the town of Bolayır on the Gallipoli Peninsula and the Bulgarian ruler of Nikopol called Shishman in the context of the early Ottoman conquest of the Balkans. The purpose of the research is to reveal the historical figures and events included in the account as well as the possible paths by which the memory of them reached Kemalpashazade. The juxtaposition of Kemalpashazade’s text with a number of historical sources from the 14th through 18th century has allowed for two major conclusions. Firstly, the lord of Bolayır is probably identical with the Byzantine governor of Gallipoli who appears with the name of Asen tekfur in Enveri’s Dusturname and can be identified with either Manuel Asen or John Asen, the sons of the Byzantine aristocrat of Bulgarian origin Andronikos Asen. Secondly, the image of Shishman in the “Annals” has likely resulted from a contamination of the memory of several representatives of the Shishmanid dynasty such as the Bulgarian tsars Mihail III Shishman, Ivan Alexander, and Ivan Shishman as well as, possibly, the latter’s namesake uncle. Particular attention is paid to some parallels with the information about Bulgarian-Byzantine relations at the time of Tsar Michael III Shishman as described in the fifteenth-century History of Laonikos Chalkokondyles, whose possible reception among Ottoman literati including Kemalpashazade is also discussed in the paper.

This research examines the îkâ‘ descriptions of the authors who wrote music risâla between the IX and XVI centuries. The definition of the concept of îkâ‘ in the music risâla of that period, which was written between the centuries mentioned above and played an essential role in the formation of today’s Turkish music theory, and to determine how this concept changed and developed within that period presents the significance of this research. Besides, the opportunity to compare the authors’ descriptions of this concept came out with the help of this research. It is descriptive research, and the relevant data were acquired using literature review and musical analysis methods. As a result of the research, it was determined that naqra and proportion elements, especially the time element, were used as the key elements in the îkâ‘ descriptions of the period mentioned above. It also came out that the îkâ‘ descriptions made by Fârâbî and Urmevî guided many authors in this regard.

Our traditional arts, whose origins date back centuries ago, have developed and progressed with different styles and artists. Saz style ranks first among the styles that has made a difference in our traditional arts and have survived until today. The style, which initially carried the impressions of the Far East and manifested itself with ink works since the 14th century, emerges as a different decoration style from the hand of one of our 16th century artists, Shah Kulu. Saz yolu was a style created by Shah Kulu in the 16th century. The most distinctive features of the Saz style are richly detailed, dagger-leaves with a moving appearanceIn our study, similar examples of leaf motifs in saz yolu patterns in nature were investigated. Similar trees were scanned in terms of leaf shape. Comparisons were made by observing dried and curled leaves in various ways. It has been observed that the leaves of the willow tree are the most similar to the leaf motifs in the patterns. The leaves presented visually in our article are selected from hundreds of leaves that have fallen from the Willow Tree (Salix babylonica), dried over time and collected randomly. It is aimed to reach the origins of the motifs in nature and to reveal how the artists reflect the nature with the help of their imaginations.

The purpose of the article is to consider the miniature as a pictorial interpretation of the text, as one of the elements of «entertainment» in the context of the development of medieval culture. The research methodology. An analytical method is used to collect theoretical material about the miniatures of the Mirovingian period (V–VII centuries), on the example of the Sacramentarium Gelasianum and Gellon Sacramentarium; the miniatures from the times of the Carolingian revival of the VIII-IX centuries, («Gospel of Godescalk», «Gospel of Ada», «Gospel from the monastery of St. Medard in Soissons»). A historical and cultural method is applied to analyse the role of the miniature in the socio-cultural life of Medieval Europe as one of the elements of ceremonial and ritual «entertainment». An art historical method that involves a detailed examination and description of a medieval book miniature, and a theoretical method are used to summarise the findings. The scientific novelty of the work is that for the first time the miniatures are considered as a pictorial interpretation of the text in the context of the development of the medieval culture, as a sensual form of knowledge of an ideal model, and one of the elements of the personification of ritualistic "entertainment" in the socio-cultural life of this historical period. Conclusions. The article examines the miniature as a visual interpretation of the text in the context of the development of the culture of the Middle Ages. It has been proven that since ancient times the miniature, on the example of the "Ambrosian Iliad", was the personification of ceremonial and ritual, and partly artistic "entertainment", which made it possible to outline the miniature as a pictorial component of this phenomenon, as well as a pictorial interpretation of the handwritten text which reflects the most current events of this historical era. The brightest examples of the miniatures in the early Christian tradition of Western Europe, which are presented in the Merovingian manuscripts of the V-VIII centuries, are considered using the example of the Sacramentarium Gelasianum and Gellon Sacramentarium. Graphic miniature decoration becomes not just a pictorial interpretation of the text, but turns into an element of worship. There are many images of birds, fish, animals, and plant ornaments, the emphasis is on red, yellow, and green. Great attention is paid to the decorative design of the capital letters of the sections, they become special symbolic signs that are even attributed with magical meaning. The miniature begins to act as a sensual form of knowledge of the ideal model, which is available to the chosen ones. This tradition continues on the example of Carolingian manuscripts, the miniatures «Source of Life» («Gospel of Godescalcus»), «Adoration of the Lamb» and «Source of Life» («Gospel from the Monastery of St. Medard in Soissons») are symbolic, personifying the theocentric worldview, that the Gospel is the source of eternal life.

The paper provides an analysis of eschatological themes in medieval debates between body and soul related to the Kingdom of Bohemia. The oldest poem (after 1320) emphasizes the particular judgment as the dominant eschatological horizon, probably under the influence of the Processus Sathanae. The old Czech translation of Visio Philiberti (ca. 1370) seems to avoid the description of physically conceived pain of a separated soul and stresses the absence of God as the worst punishment. The third old Czech debate (end of the 14th c.) underlines the loving bond between human composites, further accentuated in a contemporary Latin prose debate between body and soul by the archbishop of Prague John of Jenstein in his Liber dialogorum.

The paper offers a survey of the reasons for the collapse of the Byzantine Empire. The author analyzes the preconditions for this process, dating some of them to as early as the tenth century. He further outlines both the internal and external factors that facilitated it by tracing their development in different times and contexts. Key events from the thirteenth through the fifteenth centuries as well as the policies of Byzantine emperors and European rulers are discussed in view of their impact on the Empire’s political trajectory during this period. Conversely to popular opinion, the author considers the Fourth Crusade of 1204 to have laid the grounds for the temporary survival and revitalization of Byzantium, but the state’s nature after its restoration in 1261 is described as ill-suited to withstand the Ottoman expansion in the fourteenth and the fifteenth centuries, the availability or lack of foreign support notwithstanding. Based on the foregoing interpretative approach, the concluding overview provides a three-stage periodization of the era of decline as well as a recapitulation of the positive and negative factors – external and internal alike – that shaped the ultimate demise of the Empire.

Ksani valley, due to its geographical location, has played an important role in the political, economic and cultural life of Georgia since time immemorial. It is located in the western part of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region and is administratively within the framework of three municipalities. It belongs to Akhalgori municipality from Khloi Tbi to Odzei, Odzei is a village of Dusheti municipality, and from Tsovris to Tsikhisdzire is Mtskheti municipality. There were two important political units in the Ksani valley: Saeristavo and Samukhranbatono of Ksani, which were connected to each other, as well as to different regions of Georgia and the North Caucasus by a number of important roads. The paper talks about the roads connecting the Ksani valley both internally and with the outside world. At the beginning, attention is paid to the important factors of the promotion of Largvis, the former center of Saeristavo, among which the roads and paths existing here were given a leading role. Roads coming from the valleys of Churti, Karchokh-Zhamuri and Niazum converged in Largvis. In addition, it included the valleys of Saeristavo Iviri, Little Liakhvi and Kholot-Kvitkiri of Niazm (later Ksni). In the work, a proper place is given to the roads connecting these valleys with Kartli Bar or Transcaucasia. From the middle of the 14th century, when the possession of the Eristavas of Ksni increased sharply in the direction of the Kartli Vaki and the residence of the Eristavas gradually moved from the north to the south, which should have happened at the turn of the 16th-17th centuries, the new center of Saeristavo, Akhalgori, acquired the function of connecting the mountain and the bar. By the second half of the 17th century, one of the powerful principalities in Georgia already covered a large area: the valleys of Ksni, Alevi, Safersheti, Churti, Niazm, Karchokhi, Zhamuri, MaghranDvaleti sankhas, a significant part of the Lekhuri valley, Kholot-Kvitkiri, Isuri, Mejudi, Tsromi. , small Liakhvi valleys and the foothills. The road network is also growing and becoming more important. In the paper, the main roads of the inter-rural and Ksani Saeristavo regions are highlighted, among which the roads connecting Akhalgori - Tbilisi, Akhalgori - Ananuri, Akhalgori - Dariali Gorge, Mejvriskhevi - Dariali Gorge, Mejvriskhevi - Tbilisi, Mejvriskhevi - Gori and Mejvriskhevi - Tskhinvali are highlighted. The role assigned to these roads in the political and economic life of the capital and the country is highlighted. We are also talking about the measures that the Royal Court implemented in connection with the maintenance of roads in accordance with the appropriate legislation. Many Georgian and foreign travelers do not use the roads in the Ksani valley, their story has a proper place in the work. At the end of the paper, the sad reality that followed the August 2008 war is reviewed; Today, the roads connecting the Ksni valley and especially the mountainous region with the outside world are on the brink of collapse due to lack of maintenance.

The subject, which is presented in the form of the article, is mainly one of the important research topics of the doctoral research (feudal house of the Charmul’s family of the XIII-XVIII centuries). Here is a brief introduction to some of the members of this genus who, at various times according to historical documents and narrative sources, held both ecclesiastical and secular positions. The Charmuli’s family held the position of Aragvi Eristavi for some time. In addition, they were members of the church council - "Mtskhetishvili" institute and hold this position. The article discusses the activities of individual representatives of the family of Charmauli and their official positions, which were given at different times with the support of the kings and Catholics. In this regard, an important place is occupied by Iovane Charmauli, who is the first from this family to become “Mtskhetshishvili” and in the future lays the foundation of the family of Charmauli in the "Mtskhetshishvili" institution. Since Iovane, the Charmaulis have been one of the twelve important families of Mtskhetshishvili. Apart from Iovane, Giorgi Charmauli, a 16th century figure, enjoys the trust of the church and writes important documents on the orders of the highest clergy and holds the position of scribe. In 1531, Basil the Catholicos even gave him a deed of mercy, which is interesting in its content. In 1657, Christopher Catholicos gave the title of “Merikiphetukhutsesi” to Zacharia Charmauli, and in 1675 Domenti Catholicos gave him another title of “Mouravi” (Chief) of the village of Aghain. Both Catholics paid a lot of attention to the same person, which is explained by his devotion to the Church. The documents that provide us with important information on the issue raised by us during the research on these and other important issues, most of them have not been published and this is important in this regard as well.

Infectious Diseases and Their Treatment in Georgian Written Sources

The article reviews the manuscripts of medical content (fundamental works - Medical Book ("Thsigni Saakimoi"), "Yadigar Daud", "Incomparable Qarabadin" (“Ustsoro Karabadini”), collections, separate works, qarabadins), the chronological framework of which includes the 10th-19th centuries, they reflect information about infectious diseases and their treatment; also, medical references in the memoirs with a focus on the public perceptions, causes, and management of these diseases. The article presents the material in terms of belonging to the chronological, sectoral and cultural environment: the role of the authors or translators of the works in terms of knowledge about epidemiological diseases, the establishment of special terminology, the introduction of Eastern and European traditions. The Georgian manuscripts reflect the diagnosis of some infectious diseases - plague, cholera, leprosy, smallpox, typhoid - the influence of regional and social characteristics of the infected on the spread and course of diseases, traditional, folk, and contemporary scientific methods of treatment, including vaccination, isolation/lockdown, and escaping tactics, other anti-epidemic measures. These manuscripts contain references to Eastern, Muslim, and European, as well as Russian physicians and scientists (Galen, Jenner, and others); To some extent, it presents the details of society's approach to infectious diseases, in general, the general knowledge and picture of the development of medicine in a specific historical context.

The increasing environmental changes and the progressive climate crisis are forcing a constant search for the causes of the problem. It is seen not only in technological progress, industrialization and consumptionism, but in man’s negative attitudes towards nature. One of its solutions is the formation of a new pro-ecological attitude, which operates not only in the natural, but also in the social and cultural context. A manifestation of contemporary ecological thought are gardens, which have now acquired the status of a timeless ecological topos and are becoming an ecosymbol of man's relationship with the environment. In this sense, gardens are a place of coexistence between man and nature, which is treated as a common home — an oikos. The purpose of this article is to explain the contemporary idea of ecological gardens and to try to trace their origins in Roman agronomic literature and medieval gardens. The article explores a big number of lexical and figurative similarities concerning the passions of the soul conveyed in the works of two authors who take significant place in the history of the medieval and modern Bulgarian literature – the first one is the XIV century author of religious anthems – Efrem and the second is Yavorov – one of the most famous Bulgarian poets from the very beginning of the XX century. Efrem’s views about the fall, passions and contrition of the soul, as well as the connections of these views with the Christian penitential literature and st. Paul’s letter to the Romans are regarded in details. Special attention is paid to Efrem’s soteriological notion of inferno which is rooted in psalms and the Christian idea of Jesus’ victory over death. This soteriological notion essentially differs from the mythological notion of inferno taking place in other literary traditions from the same period. In respect to the passions of the soul the analysis of the poetry of Yavorov reveals a big number of figurative and lexical similarities with Efrem’s anthems. I conclude that the similarities in question are not result of cultural continuum between Yavorov and Efrem but originate from common dramatic experiences exceeding epochs and the peculiarities of literary genres. These common experiences give rise to similar metaphysic language used by both authors.

THE MEDIEVAL POLISH DOCTRINE OF THE LAW OF NATIONS: IUS GENTIUM

In attempting to summarize in a few sentences the achievements of the medieval scholars of the Polish school of ius gentium, we must emphasize that by employing the inherited legal and philosophico-theological tradition and intellectual achievements of the University of Kraków, coupling it with their own genius, they manager to create a coherent and universal system of international law. It was a system so modern, wise, tolerant and universal that it was able to be applied not only in solving the painful problem stemming from the lengthy conflict between Poland and the Teutonic Knights but was also used in resolving global problems of the contemporary Christian’s world conflict with the non-Christian one. That legal system, based upon the eternal principles of Divine and natural law, taking account of the Gospel Law of Love and inseparably connecting law with morality and justice with truth, remains valid even today.

Łacińska humiliatio a staropolska pokora. Wpływ polszczyzny na łacinę w średniowieczu

The paper discusses cross-linguistic interference observed while studying Latin humiliatio, humilitas (and additionally homagium, venia) and Old Polish pokora, referring to the statutory and customary legal practice of ‘public humiliation of the culprit, most often the murderer, and their request for forgiveness’. The research focuses on the linguistic and socio-cultural changes that made the juridical meaning of humiliatio, humilitas emerge. The paper offers a diachronic analysis of the development of a set of words that share the root humil*, followed by a synchronic study of the vocabulary attested in Old Polish, Old Czech, and in Medieval Latin used in other countries. The article discusses linguistic and socio-cultural factors that might have contributed to the development of the juridical sense of humiliatio, humilitas in Medieval Latin in Poland, and concludes with a hypothesis that the described sense emerged as a calque of one of the senses of the Polish word pokora.
