THE POLITICS OF LOCATION AND SEXUALITY IN LEILA AHMED’S AND NAWAL EL SAADAWI’S LIFE NARRATIVES

THE POLITICS OF LOCATION AND SEXUALITY IN LEILA AHMED’S AND NAWAL EL SAADAWI’S LIFE NARRATIVES

Author(s): Leila Aouadi / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2014

This article explores Leila Ahmed’s A Border Passage, and Nawal ElSaadawi’s Memoirs from the Women’s Prison, A Daughter of Isis, and Walking Through Fire. It contrasts their works and argues that location and gender awareness play an important role in the writing of autobiographies. The focus is on showing how El Saadawi’s positioning as a feminist activist in Egypt and Ahmed’s location in the USA determine the texts’ themes and shape the construction of the autobiographical “I.”

Vlna antisemitizmu v Československu vyvolaná politickým procesom s Rudolfom Slánskym a spol

Author(s): MARTIN ŠROMOVSKÝ / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 2/2015

The beginning of 1950s in Czechoslovakia was a period of political processes, among which the Rudolf Slansky et al. trial had possibly the largest impact on the society. It was accompanied by a massive media campaign, characterized by a strong anti-cosmopolitan, anti-Zionist and anti-Israel spirit. Articles in newspapers that tried to accuse, inter alia, the Zionists, cosmopolitans (thus people of Jewish descent) and the State of Israel of the negative economic situation in the country, could not cause any other reaction but the anti-Semitism. In contrast to the so-called Popular anti-Semitism, which was on the scene mainly in Slovakia after the Second World War, in the early '50s the anti-Semitism was caused by government – so-called government anti-Semitism.

TÉMA: HOLOKAUST

Author(s): Jana Hanzelova / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 02/2016

This study focuses on the reflection of the theme of the Holocaust in selected theatre texts which have appeared on Slovak stages after 1989 (Rastislav Ballek and Martin Kubran’s Tiso, Anna Grusková’s Rabínka [The Rabbi], Viliam Klimáček’s Holokaust [The Holocaust], Elfriede Jelinek’s Rechnitz). By analysing these productions, the author explores the possibilities of the aesthetic representation of a traumatizing past, both at the level of text and stage performance. The artistic coming to terms with the Holocaust is assessed with regard to its socio-political impact on the recipient of the work.

Smurto prieš moteris prevencija: nacionalinės teisės spragos

Smurto prieš moteris prevencija: nacionalinės teisės spragos

Author(s): Laima Vaigė / Language(s): Lithuanian Issue: 1/2016

The paper focuses on the gaps in national law in preventing repetitive violence and adopting a general strategy for the prevention of violence against women. The national legislation of the Republic of Lithuania is evaluated in relation to international law in the area of gender-based and domestic violence. Notably, Lithuania is a party to the corresponding international documents in this area. However, the national legislation at the level of laws and regulations lacks links with international law and relevant documents. The basic preventive measures are very broad and are not targeted at the elimination of violence against women; instead, they seek to decrease the numbers of crimes in the area of domestic violence. The most relevant sectors for prevention, i.e. the health care sector and the education sector, are not involved. The objectives of prevention are not placed within the gender equality paradigm, and violence against women is not seen as being connected with stereotypes and discrimination. In addition, gaps are identified in the prevention of repeated violence against women. The paper suggests that the system of protective orders should be reformed so that protective orders are available to all victims of violence and not limited to domestic violence victims. Both civil and criminal protection measures should exist, and they should be applicable to post-trial victims as well. It is also recommended that the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, which is the most thorough document on prevention, be ratified. Ratification would improve the weakest point in Lithuanian legislation on violence against women – the prevention of violence.

Author(s): Olga Yakushenko / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2016

This article deals with the impact of western architecture on Soviet architecture during and after the Thaw and Nikita Khrushchev’s reforms in the spheres of architecture and construction. By the late 1950s international postwar modernism became an official Soviet architectural style. The article explains how Soviet architects discovered and learned this new style: through magazines and books, both translated and in their original languages; through business and tourist trips abroad; and through personal connections and official channels. The main argument is that in the 1960s Soviet architecture became embedded in an international system of architecture but at its far periphery. Moreover, the visual westernizing make over of Soviet architecture did not change its inner structure and has rather negative implications for the perception and evaluation of the architectural legacy of the post-Stalin era.

Тандем «Сознательной матери» и врача: зарождение педиатрического патронажа над грудными детьми в России на рубеже XIX-XX вв

Author(s): Natalja Aleksandrovna Mitsyuk / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2015

The article aims to explore the circumstances of the origin of the pediatric patronage in Russia. The objective of the study is to prove that the basic methods of work with infants and their mothers were formulated and tested not in Soviet Russia, but during 1860—1910ies. The author uses an interdisciplinary, anthropologically oriented approach, makes use of the so-called everyday methods, biographical methods, as well as methods of gender and micro history. The research focuses not only on mothers of workers and peasants, but also on mothers of nobility. The article uses both objective sources of information (reports, charters of an association of charities), and subjective ones — egodocuments (women's diaries and autobiographical account), which allows to represent the process of pediatric patronage birth from the point of view of the patient, from the inside. The author argues that pediatric nursing appeared among the higher strata of society at the beginning of the XX c. in Russia. Its appearance was due to the spread of the child-centrism, “conscious motherhood” and the development of pediatric knowledge. The ideology of “conscious motherhood”, professionalization of mothers led to the fact that women in the daily care of children didn't trust their own knowledge or the advice of their friends, but only the instructions of professionals — qualified pediatricians.

SOCIOLOŠKI PRISTUP U UPRAVLJANJU SREDNJOŠKOLSKIM NASILJEM U SRBIJI U COVID – 19 POSTPANDEMIJSKOM PERIODU

SOCIOLOŠKI PRISTUP U UPRAVLJANJU SREDNJOŠKOLSKIM NASILJEM U SRBIJI U COVID – 19 POSTPANDEMIJSKOM PERIODU

Author(s): Milena Milosavljević Stević,Života Radosavljević,Aleksandar Anđelković / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 23/2024

It is evident that the world has been grappling with violence of various kinds and levels through history. Precise analyses indicate that contemporary society views this issue from the perspectives of security and rights, emphasizing preventive action and the sanctioning of perpetrators. There are few studies that delve into the sociological aspect of violence, despite sociology being a social science which examines human relationships and interactions. Given that sociology has developed specialized branches such as cultural sociology, rural sociology, sociology of religion, business sociology, sociology of labour, sociology of sport, etc., there is a need to consider introducing sociology of violence as a branch of study that comprehensively addresses the issue of violence. This is significant as the intensity of violence not directly related to war activities is drastically increasing, even with dramatic consequences. In the light of the above, it is essential to focus attention specifically on certain types of violence and their causes. This paper draws attention to the sociological managerial aspect of high school violence in the Republic of Serbia, encompassing not only violence among students, but also violence by teachers against students, students against teachers, and violence perpetrated by parents against teachers. The research focuses on the period following the conclusion of the Covid–19 pandemic crisis in the Republic of Serbia, aiming to determine whether and to what extent the pandemic has affected violence in Serbia high schools. The aim of this paper is to higlight specific sociological phenomena that influence violence in Serbian high schools, with the intention that the research findings could be used to formulate policies and strategies against all types of violence in high schools

The Aggressiveness of Institutionalized Minors Depending on the Type of Residence

Author(s): Catalin-George Fedor,Daniela Cojocaru / Language(s): English Issue: 86/2024

This article presents the findings of a research study that sought to identify and compare the levels of aggression exhibited by institutionalised minors, contingent on the type of residence in which they are situated. To this end, the research was conducted on a sample of 200 minors residing in four different forms of care: foster care, traditional placement centre, and apartment. The Buss and Perry aggression questionnaire was employed to assess four dimensions of aggression: verbal, physical, anger and hostility. The results demonstrate the presence of all forms of aggression in the research subjects, albeit with varying levels contingent on the type of residence of the institutionalised minor. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the child protection system requires reform, with an emphasis on developing the maternal care component and reducing the proportion of traditional foster care centres.

Author(s): Ana Vladescu,Bogdan BORȘ,Denisa Leonte / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The article presents the results of a mixed-method study undertaken in Romanian public schools on the incidence of violence and gender-based violence (GBV) in children aged 11-15. WOMEN'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE LIBERATION OF KOSOVO IN 1998-1999

WOMEN'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE LIBERATION OF KOSOVO IN 1998-1999

Author(s): Moses KAMBERI / Language(s): English Issue: 21-22/2024

The work brings to mind the years 1998 and 1999 in Kosovo, which brought a lot of suffering. Serbian forces carried out massacres, murders, raped women and men and destroyed almost the entire country. Approximately 90% of Kosovo Albanians were forcibly expelled from their homes. The paper brings to attention a contemporary issue, in these times of horror that are being repeated in the same form again in Ukraine and Palestine, groups of women and girls who are raped, massacred and killed, help displaced people with food, support, medical care, housing and education.Over 20 thousand Albanian women and girls were raped by the Serbs during the years 1998-1999. The harrowing narratives of Kosovar women and girls reveal the barbaric violence that the Serbs have inflicted on women, girls, mothers, children and men, who became victims of rape during the war. The role of women in Kosovo, in this war, was as important as the role of women for the creation of a new life. This research is based on real statistics of the testimonies of women and girls during the war in Kosovo. According to the records, women and girls got knowledge about weapons and ammunition and became part of the national liberation struggle. The women became the informers of the massacres that the Serbs would do in the towns and villages, preventing them. The lack of an accurate number of women participating in the war for the liberation of Kosovo means that they do not take their rightful place in this war. They deserve recognition. According to the data, there was a considerable number of women in the guerrilla BIA. Women had a key role in the liberation of the country, they must have been forgotten by the free state of Kosovo. The contribution and sacrifices of women during the war in Kosovo were unparalleled, they aimed at the war and the liberation of the Albanian lands. In many studies, this role of women in liberation has not been identified, due attention has not been paid to it, and this is related to the existence of patriarchal norms of Kosovar society. The exclusion of women from this active contribution is related to these norms and this study makes an effort to bring this contribution of women to the liberation war of Kosovo. The study brings to attention that the contribution of women during the war should be documented and be part of our oral and written history, whose contribution has been little described.

CONSEQUENCES OF EXPOSURE TO FAMILY VIOLENCE ON THE ACADEMIC SUCCESS OF CHILDREN, ADOLESCENTS, AND YOUNG PEOPLE

Author(s): Marilena Geanina Bârsan / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

This article examines the consequences of domestic violence on the lives and education of children, adolescents, and young people, highlighting how they can benefit from support within the educational system (Lloyd, 2018). By applying a systematic research and review approach, we synthetically analyzed studies that precisely evaluated the quantitative and qualitative impact of exposure to family violence on the academic achievements of these age groups. The results underscore the need for implementing educational solutions and support to help them overcome trauma and develop harmoniously. Synthesizing recent studies, we explored how exposure to family violence affects the adaptation and academic achievements of the respondents. The nine examined studies focused on the population of children, adolescents, and young people to assess the relationship between exposure to family violence and academic performance (Supol, 2021). In these research studies, exposure to family violence was treated as an independent variable, while academic success was considered a dependent variable. The conclusions highlight the significant link between family violence and a decline in academic results, emphasizing negative consequences on concentration and learning (da Silva Alves, 2021). Additionally, how a family climate marked by violence influences involvement in school activities, impacting their emotional well-being, is addressed. Through a comprehensive analysis of this topic, the review provides a more detailed understanding of the mechanisms through which family violence can influence the academic trajectory of young people and suggests possible directions for interventions and support.

Violence in the print media: towards a psychosocial perspective

Violence in the print media: towards a psychosocial perspective

Author(s): Djamila Ouchene / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2025

This study examines the impact of sports-specific print media on violence in football stadiums in Algeria. The goal is to analyze the relationship between media discourse and violent behaviors observed, particularly among young spectators. A quantitative approach was adopted, with a questionnaire distributed to 140 sports journalists from four Algerian newspapers. The questions focused on sports media and violence. The results show that the sports press plays a crucial role in inciting violence by cultivating a culture of revenge and reinforcing fanaticism among supporters. Media coverage seems to amplify the portrayal of violence, contributing to the escalation of violent behaviors in the stadiums. The study highlights the influence of media on young people, increasing their tendency to adopt aggressive behaviors, which raise concerns regarding the harmful effect of these media representations on society. The conclusions suggest that media should adopt a more responsible approach to limit the spread of violence in sports and in the Algerian society.
