Author(s): Tinuke M. Fapohunda,Felicia Omotayo Soares / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

Workplace bullying is a phenomenon that affects employee performance and productivity. This paper examines workplace bullying to determine its types, features, prevalence in the Nigerian work environment and its effect both on the employees and on the organisation. 200 participants were selected from different departments of a Lagos area office of a federal organisation. Three hypotheses were tested. There was significant relationship between workplace bullying and staff performance. Дети войны: беспризорность и безнадзорность в Центральном Казахстане в 1941–1945 гг. (по архивным документам)

Author(s): Zh.K. Abdukarimova,Z.G. Saktaganova,Alla Arkadevna Salnikova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 6/2021

In this article, the materials from the Archives of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Central State Archives of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the State Archives of the Karaganda Region are introduced in historical science and analyzed to shed light on children’s everyday life during the Great Patriotic War in Central Kazakhstan. The focus is on neglect, homelessness, and juvenile delinquency among children raised under the extreme conditions of the war, such as a sharp increase in the number of children either deprived of parental care or neglected and living in foster families. The new archival documents reveal the levels of homelessness, neglect, and juvenile delinquency in Central Kazakhstan as a whole and in its each region taken separately. The differences observed can be attributed to the specifics of the social structure of the population living there. The conclusion is made about the general effectiveness of the measures taken by various state structures and institutions, primarily the NKVD (People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs) and the national education bodies. However, some problems remained unsolved due to the lack of financial and labor resources, as well as because of the difficulties in the organization of training and educational activities for children.

Brexit and its Implications on the Freedom of Religion and Belief in the UK

Author(s): Özgür Heval Çınar / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

This article examines what the implications of Brexit might be on the freedom of religion and belief, one of the most significant freedoms for social identity, in light of the ongoing debate concerning the political, economic, social and cultural effects of Brexit on the United Kingdom (UK). There is particular anxiety over increasing religious hate crime since the European Union (EU) Referendum of 23 June 2016, with people wondering if the tradition of tolerance in Britain will be affected. Consequently, in this article the following questions will be asked: Will Brexit seriously undermine the existential conditions of this freedom? Will Brexit enable the UK to present itself as a haven for people suffering because of restrictions on religious symbols introduced in Continental Europe? Are Government plans to prevent a rise in Brexit-related religious hate crimes sufficient? How should such hate crimes be combatted?

Usłyszeć krzyk zza klasztornej furty

Author(s): Tomasz Krzyżak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 687/2022

Niewiele wiadomo o skali wykorzystywania sióstr zakonnych. Więcej powiedzieć można o mechanizmach, które stosują sprawcy, a także o skutkach wykorzystania u osób pokrzywdzonych. Są skutki psychiczne, m.in. stres pourazowy, depresja, strach przed stygmatyzacją. A także duchowe: żal do Boga, osłabienie wiary.

FORME ALE VIOLENŢEI ASUPRA FEMEILOR ÎN BANATUL MEDIEVAL (1350–1450)

Author(s): Ligia Boldea / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 31/2021

The present issue aims to catch some aspects of the violence against women in the medieval Banat community, on the account of some unpublished and published documents preserved up to us. I do believe that the analyzed cases reveal the inter-human relations which substantially overleapt sometimes the limits of decorum, even if I do not pretend that my research is an exhaustive one. In the limited frame of the documentary content according to that time blanks and need to strictly express a juridical situation, we might find details in some species that offered the opportunity to find out the abuses the noble or subservient women had to face than, and these ones are to be pointed out. I do hope that such joined details draw o more vivid and shaded image of the role the woman played inside the family, or in society, without a forced extension of the facts. Another explanation is needed here: given the nature of the preserved papers, the content of papers differs aleatory; so there are detailed data in some of the cases or any summary ones concerning judicial acts resulted from violence against women.

ÇİN’İN DOĞU TÜRKİSTAN’DAKİ ZORLU ÇALIŞTIRMA KAMPLARI VE EKONOMİK ÇIKARLARI

Author(s): Mehmetali Kasım / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 54/2022

In the past, forcing people to work against their will as slave labor was common in various parts of the world. However, this exploitation is seen as an inhuman practice or crime in today's modern world. Despite being seen as a violation of international law it continues to be implemented in practice by authoritarian regimes in many parts of the world, such as North Korea and China. China, in particular, practices forced labor at a different level. The Chinese government uses forced labor not just for economic or political purposes. At the same time, it uses as a tool for nations with whom holding different religions, cultures, values, and identities assimilate into the dominant Han culture. Although this method is applied in various regions of China, but it has reached its peak in terms of the size of the forced labor camps and the severity of the practice in today's East Turkestan and becoming like a genocide. The Beijing administration violated international law with its collaborators both within the state and abroad. With the common mentality of difference considered is a threat continues its Sinicization policies to build a uniform homogeneous structure.

Survival in the Ghetto of Moghilev-Podolsky. A Microhistorical Inquiry

Survival in the Ghetto of Moghilev-Podolsky. A Microhistorical Inquiry

Author(s): Julie Dawson / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The ghetto of Moghilev-Podolsky was the largest in Romanian-controlled Transnistria. Despite this, no study devoted exclusively to this ghetto exists to this day. In the present article I take a microhistorical approach to illuminate aspects of ghetto life and probe the experience of the individual. Framed around the narrative of one man’s oral history held at the Fortunoff Archive of Holocaust Testimonies, I follow the stations of passage within the ghetto, seeking to highlight those places where agency engendered survival and where circumstances overtook any control an individual may have held.

Katolička crkva u borbi protiv seksualne zloporabe djece i maloljetnika

Author(s): Velimir Blažević / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 56/2022

“The Sense of Justice and the Need for Eugenics Require Instant and Effective Intervention”: Terminating Pregnancies Resulting from Wartime Rapes in Poland in 1945

“The Sense of Justice and the Need for Eugenics Require Instant and Effective Intervention”: Terminating Pregnancies Resulting from Wartime Rapes in Poland in 1945

Author(s): Jakub Gałęziowski / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

In the final months of the World War II and the first months after that conflict’s end, millions of Red Army soldiers passed through Poland in both directions. They not only participated in military actions but also frequently committed crimes against the civilian population. The sexual violence they perpetuated affected not only local women who lived in former territories belonging to the Third Reich (so-called autochthons), but also Polish women—former forced laborers and ex-prisoners of concentration camps returning to their homes after the war and displaced women from the Kresy Wschodnie (eastern borderlands) who migrated to the western territories. These rapes led to the spread of venereal diseases and many unwanted pregnancies. As a result, from June to November 1945, an exception was introduced which made it possible to legally terminate those pregnancies which were the result of so-called war circumstances. Based on the preserved archival documents, it is impossible to estimate the number of abortions, but judging by the secret appeal of the communist authorities from October 1945, it must have been enormous: doctors were advised to exercise “considerable restraint” in directing women to treatments, given the “the demographic needs of a war-devastated country.” Ultimately, therefore, the concern for demographic loses and resulting pro-natalist policies won out over the need for “eugenics” and any “sense of justice.” The article discusses issues of post-war biopolitics that have not yet been explored in Polish historiography.

Protection of the Child Victims of Human Trafficking in the United States

Protection of the Child Victims of Human Trafficking in the United States

Author(s): Zbigniew Lasocik / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2021

According to international human rights standards and European regulations, children who provide paid sexual services are considered victims of the crime of human trafficking and should receive special protection. In the United States, however, such children are also treated as perpetrators of the crime of prostitution and are often arrested. In Europe, there is a non-punishment clause, expressed in Article 8 of the European Union Directive of 2011. Since in the US such a clause does not exist, therefore some states are looking for other ways to protect child victims from arrest. One of the instruments of such protection is the institution of “safe harbor”. This legal regulation allows to avoid negative criminal consequences of a violation of the law. Typical for economic and financial regulations, this institution is nowadays used by some states to protect child victims “from law enforcement”. The article examines the process of creating legislation relating to children who are exploited in the sex business and who are victims of modern slavery. Analysis of such legislation in Colorado serves as a case study. Despite negative attitudes of some policymakers and part of the society, under pressure from experts and non-governmental organizations, the relevant law was prepared only in 2019. Ultimately, the legislative procedure could be finalized thanks to the agreement between the Republican and Democrat representatives, and the law came into force thanks to the firm stance of a progressive Governor of the state.
