An occupation, which is necessary to earn a good living, is a collection of activities based on knowledge and skills that are formed by a certain education and defined by a society. The choice of profession is not just about what an individual is doing, but also about what kind of life he/she is going to live. In this context, we tried to determine the factors that are effective in the choice of the occupation of the individuals. For this purpose firstly, the related literature was examined with the aim of investigating the factors that are effective in choosing an occupation and then, a survey was conducted on 481 individuals with different demographic factors working in Istanbul. As a result of the research, five factors affecting the occupation choice of the individuals were reached. These factors are; professional knowledge and skills, high yield and liability expectations, status expectation, family and educational environment, occupational structural characteristics. It was determined that the choice of profession varies according to sex, marital status, age groups, working status and educational status. The results of the research are important in order to summarize what factors affect the individuals choice of occupation in our country.

Though historically this region of Europe was source and destination region for considerably large flows of migration, starting with the second half of the nineteenth century massive flows of outmigration from Transylvania were registered. The massive outflows were in relation both with the semi-peripheral position of this region within the expanding economic world system, the nation building strategies of the post First World War era, the failure of socialism as an economic system, and the reintegration of this region in the global economic system. Within this period of radical reconfiguration, ethnicity played a major role both in engendering and structuring emigration. The article represents a short review of these flows, (not exclusively) focusing on the mobility processes involving and affecting the ethnic Hungarian population of this historical province.

The paper is devoted to the estimation of the relationship between the types of resources’ allocation and means-ends structures of savings and investments in the households. Confirmatory factor analysis of resource allocation scale was used for development of the altruistic-cooperative and non-cooperative/competitive bi-polar dimension of allocation scale. The means – end chains approach (Association Pattern Technique) has been used to assess the relationship between means and ends of saving and investing of the households’ members. Multinomial logit models with latent variables and dummy covariates were used for testing the relationship between means-ends, allocation strategies and socio-demographic characteristic of the family members.

Since 1901, the Nobel Prize has been awarded to scientists who have made the most important discoveries for the benefit of humanity. The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded jointly to Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young “for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm.” It may be surprising to learn that those three scientists dedicated their entire careers to research on the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. However, as their studies progressed, it became increasingly clear that the mechanism of the biological clock that they discovered in Drosophila is very similar to a timekeeping mechanism present in mammals, including humans. Through interdisciplinary work between scientists performing basic research on model organisms and doctors working in medical schools, we have learned over time that daily rhythms support human health while disruption of these rhythms is associated with a range of pathological disorders such as cardiovascular problems, metabolic, neurological, and many other diseases. This short review will highlight critical milestones on the way to understanding biological clocks, focusing on the roles played by the three Nobel Prize winners.

The article deals with the evolution of the Russian emigration processes at the turn of the 21st century. Based on the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the Russian emigration flows over the past 25 years, the authors highlighted five emigration waves characterized by their main emigrant categories and emigration channels. Attention has been given not only to the size of the emigration flows but also to the emigration flow’s own compositional characteristics, especially age structure. The authors’ bench¬mark analysis of the Russian emigration data provided by the Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation and the data on Russian immigrants provided by the national statistics services of foreign countries showed the overwhelming quantitative discrepancies in the migration flows set out in the Russian statistics, thus underestimating the intensity of emigration.

We document that the slowdown in the growth of the immigrant population in the United States since 2000 is the largest observed using Census data since 1870. Non-parametric tests reveal that the sharp decline is similar in magnitude to changes in migration growth rates that followed the two major historical regime changes in U.S. immigration policy. Migration rates are slowing across nearly all age, sex, educational and country of origin categories that we examine. We find that the stock of adult migrants under age 30 is smaller in 2015 than in 2000, a potential precursor to a declining overall stock, as was seen around the introduction of the national quotas regime in 1920. Heterogenous changes have led to slower declines for men than women, and an increase in the relative scarcity of low-skilled labor. Approximately half of the overall decline is due to falling Mexican immigration.
