Author(s): Anna Kremel / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2014

Innovation in business is the key to its development, and a decisive factor as regards the level of market competitiveness. The “life” of every enterprise consists of many interdependent processes. Occupational health and safety is an area which accompanies all of those workplace processes. Innovation, i.e. broadly understood organisational and process-related changes are one way of improving the health and safety at work. Innovation in the fi eld of OHS involves ideas on how to improve the existing, and how to introduce new solutions aimed at enhancing the quality of work. Appropriate safety management, monitoring and assessment of the implemented improvements, access to knowledge and new technologies, adequate social relationships within a company all influence the internal corporate atmosphere, rendering the enterprise competitive, and strengthening its position on the market

Author(s): Radosław Kubus / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2019

Since 1816 in the newly formed administrative district of Gdańsk, the official journal entitled Amtsblatt der Königlichen Regierungs zu Danzig started to be published. One of the issues that periodically appears on the pages of the paper, is the question of crime, especially the wanted notices. Among the descriptions of height, age or body shape of the criminals, there also appears information that could indicate illnesses, defects, traumas and general weaknesses of the defendants. The analysis of nearly a thousand of wanted notices indicates that these kind of descriptions were frequent and could constitute an important help when identifying the fugitive. The mentioned source material helps us to partly illustrate the life of the lower class of society, mainly the criminal underworld. It also constitutes an invaluable resource for historians of medicine, material culture or law.

Covid-19 Pandemisinin BIST Sektör Endeksleri İle İlişkisi: Bayer – Hanck (2013) Eşbütünleşme Analizi

Covid-19 Pandemisinin BIST Sektör Endeksleri İle İlişkisi: Bayer – Hanck (2013) Eşbütünleşme Analizi

Author(s): Ayşegül Ertuğrul Ayrancı,Gizem Ari / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 4/2021

Purpose – The Covid-19 pandemic, which unexpectedly affected the all of the world, caused serious economic losses as well as death and disease. When evaluated in general, it is seen that the Covid-19 pandemic did not affect every sector equally, while some sectors turned the said negativity into an opportunity, while some sectors came to the point of bankruptcy. The main goal of this research is to investigate the relationship between BIST sectoral indexes and the number of Covid-19 cases. Thus, it will be revealed which sectors have more negative effects for the examined period. Design/methodology/approach – For the daily data including 5 days of the week between 13.03.2020 - 07.05.2021, the relations between the number of covid and BIST sector indices are considered as long and short term. Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) and Phillips-Perron (PP) tests were used to test the stationarity of the data. Final Prediction Error (FPE), Hannan-Quinn (HQ), Schwarz (SW), Likelihood Ratio (LR) and Akaike Information Criteria (AIC) were used to determine the common lag lengths of the variables in the equation system. Bayer-Hanck (2013) Cointegration Analysis was used to determine long-term relationships and error correction model was used to determine short-term relationships. Results – As a result of the analysis, a long-term significant relationship was determined between the other sector indices and the number of covid cases, except for the financial index. In addition, it was observed that the number of Covid cases affected the industry index the most compared to other indexes. Discussion – The results showed that the BIST sector indices experienced a decline during the pandemic process. Uncertainty increases due to the pandemic also brought increased volatility, leading to an increase in investors' risk aversion. However, as an unexpected external effect, the pandemic caused a recession in global financial markets. Considering the extent of the epidemic and its long-term financial effects, it is clear that measures in the form of income transfers, debt postponements, tax/credit facilities, direct funding and guaranteed debt should be increased.

İşin Anlamının İş Performansına Etkisi: Eğitim Yöneticileri Üzerine Bir Araştırma

Author(s): Nesrin Kaplan,Ahmet Yıldırım / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 3/2022

Purpose –The relationship between meaning and performance at work has become even more important in extraordinary times such as the pandemic. In this study, the effect of the meaning of work on work performance was tried to be determined.Design/methodology/approach –In the model prepared in accordance with the purpose of the research, 3 sub-dimensions of the meaning of work (positive meaning of work, creating meaning from work, the goodness of the majority), which are independent variables, and 2 sub-dimensions of work performance as a dependent variable (task performance and contextual and performance) were considered.211 education managers working in primary and secondary public schools in Isparta province participated in the study. The survey method, which is a quantitative data collection tool, was used in the research. The structural validity of the scales used in the study was obtained from the analyses performed as a result of the Amos 22.0 package program.Findings–In the correlation analysis performed between the dimensions of the variables, it was observed that there were moderate, positive relations between the variables and all of the sub-dimensions. The greatest impact of job meaning and dimensions on job performance dimensions was on contextual performance. It can also be inferred that the positive and high level of impact of the meaning of work on contextual performance basically means that teachers and education managers impose deeper meanings on their work, rather than from a professionalpoint of view. Discussion –The results of the research show that the meaning attributed to the job in terms of employees makes it possible to establish a meaningful working relationship between the employee and the job. Therefore, it becomes important to understand the job correctly for employees. Human resources units also need to determine and implement the right strategies in the context of establishing meaningful relationships between the job and the employee.

Purpose – In this study; Global Risk Index for 191 countries were taken into consideration and a data mining study was conducted on cluster analysis by evaluating the negativities faced by societies. The aim of thestudy is to ensure that countries are grouped with cluster analysis, to rank the clusters in terms of risk and to determine which cluster countries are in in terms of risk. Design/Methodology/Approach – In this study, clustering was performed with the Expectation Maximization Algorithm, and then it was examined whether there was a significant difference on the basis of variables with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov Normality Test, the Levene Statistic Test of Homogeneity of Variances and the Kruskal-Wallis Significance Test. The 18 variables used in the study were divided into 10 clusters for 2019, taking into account the literature review and expert opinions, and the clusters were evaluated in terms of risk.Findings – The Expectation Maximization Algorithm revealssignificant results in the clustering analysis and when the clustering results are analyzed, risky and risk-free countries are seen in terms of global risk indicators.Discussion –In this context, it is thought that countries can be helped to take the necessary precautions regarding risk by making their own evaluations. Covid-19, which is experienced today and continues to affect the world, is also a global risk. It has been seen how unprepared the countries all over the world are for such risks.

Author(s): Nilgün Kayalı,Mert Soysal,İsmail Aktaş / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 2/2023

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine how the financial circumstances of the industry companies exchanged in the Istanbul Stock Exchange (BIST) before the Covid-19 epidemic began and during the epidemic process affected the economic health of the auto industry, which is the locomotive of employment, R&D, sustainability, and exports in relation to the Turkish economy. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, eight automotive-related companies with stocks quoted on the Borsa Istanbul (BIST) exchange had their financial statements used to calculate 14 ratios. The rates chosen encompass the initial period of 2019 and the last quarter of 2021 and are based on factors such as liquidity, activity, financial structure, and profitability. The TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method, one of the multi-criteria decision-making techniques, was used to assess financial analyses. Findings – In this study, the trend of the determined ratios before and after Covid-19 (between 2019-2021) was examined. As a result of the results obtained, in the 1st step the Decision Matrix for each period, in the 2nd step the Normalized Decision Matrix for the periods and with the preparation of the Weighted Standard Decision Matrix in the 3rd step ideal A+ and ideal A- solutions were created in the 4th step. In the 5th step, the distance measurements between the alternatives were calculated. In the final step, which is the 6th step, closeness calculations were made according to the ideal solution. As a result, the Ci values of the companies between the periods 2019-1, 2021-3 were determined. Discussion – The study's findings are consistent with those of earlier research on the topic. During the time leading up to the Covid-19 process, the start of the process, and the procedure itself, all of the companies' financial performances remained essentially unchanged with the exception of TOASO. In this situation, evaluating investment, R&D, and export alongside the financial results of the companies may be possible.

Author(s): Şükran ARSLAN GÖZTÜRK,Ömer Emre Arslan / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 3/2023

Purpose – This article aims to reveal how work-family and family-work conflict affect job satisfaction by examining the relationship between work-family life conflict and job satisfaction through health tourism employees. Design/methodology/approach – The study has a correlational research design. The sample of the study consists of 294 employees working within the scope of health tourism. Data were collected using the "Work-family life conflict scale" and "Job satisfaction scale". Reliability, correlation, simple and multiple regression analyses were performed on the data. Findings – In the study, it was concluded that work-family life conflict negatively affects the level of job satisfaction. Among the dimensions of work-family life conflict, work-family conflict dimension is a significant determinant of job satisfaction. Family-work conflict dimension has no significant effect on job satisfaction. Extrinsic and intrinsic satisfaction, which are sub-dimensions of job satisfaction, are also negatively affected by the work-family conflict dimension. Family-work conflict is not effective on intrinsic and extrinsic satisfaction dimensions. Discussion – In the study, it was observed that the relationship between work-family conflict dimension and extrinsic satisfaction came to the forefront, and the effect of work-family conflict on extrinsic satisfaction was especially noteworthy in the effect of work-family conflict on job satisfaction. The conflict levels of individuals with their families due to work negatively affect their extrinsic satisfaction levels. The study provides a sectoral insight to understand the link between work-family conflict and job satisfaction of health tourism employees.

Surrogacy versus Artificial Womb Technology: The Future of Reproduction in the European Union

Surrogacy versus Artificial Womb Technology: The Future of Reproduction in the European Union

Author(s): Katarzyna Osmenda / Language(s): English Issue: 1(29)/2024

Author of this article discussed the issue of surrogate motherhood laws and practices in the European Union, and tried to consider whether the artificial womb technology (AWT) could constitute an alternative in terms of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and other means of treating infertility. For the purpose of answering this question, a formal-dogmatic approach was applied. In order to provide necessary context, the legislative research was supplemented by the case law and secondary source research as well. Part one provides a brief explanation of the artificial womb technology. It begins with a general understanding of ectogenesis, followed by a description of current AWT research, both in terms of medical sciences and the legal and ethical considerations carried out by different authors. Section two is dedicated to the phenomena of motherhood and surrogate motherhood. Author presents several definitions of “mother”, including a gestational, biological, genetic, social, and legal one. The attention is also drawn to the legal definition of a mother on the example of selected EU countries. In order to provide a better understanding of possible motives behind the introduction of mater semper certa est principle into the applicable law, Author refers to the amendment of the Polish Family and Guardianship Code from November 6, 2008, along with the explanatory memorandum to this amendment. Lastly, the concept of surrogate motherhood is explained. Part three discovers surrogate motherhood laws in different countries of the European Union. The diversity of approaches toward surrogacy is classified in the following manner: legalization of surrogacy (complete and partial), prohibition of surrogacy (complete and partial), and no regulation on surrogacy. Established classification is followed by examples of Cypriot, Spanish, and Belgian law. It has been furthermore emphasized that, despite the inconsistency of the EU countries’ law, surrogacy is still practiced and leads to various consequences in terms of, for example, legal recognition of parenthood. In this section, Author referred to the European Court of Human Rights’ cases. In the last part, most frequent critiques of surrogate motherhood are recalled: the high risk of commodification and commercialization of the human body, possible exploitation of women, and legal uncertainty of a child born through a surrogacy agreement. Author tries to assess whether AWT is devoid of them and therefore could constitute a less hazardous option when utilized for reproduction purposes, bearing in mind its possible consequences.

COVID-19 Fear and Psychological Distress: Mediator and Moderator Effects of Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies

Author(s): Ezgi Tuna,Haticenur Koçak,Senanur Sayınta,Başak Gürül / Language(s): English Issue: 30/2023

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a worldwide threat to individuals’ physical and psychological well-being. Empirical studies show that fear and anxiety are among the most common reactions to the pandemic. There is evidence that fear of COVID-19 (FCV) may contribute to elevated levels of psychological distress and if not regulated effectively, it might create a vulnerability for the initiation of psychological problems. The purpose of the current study was to explore the mediator and moderator role of cognitive emotion regulation (CER) strategies in the relationship between FCV and psychological distress. Data was collected from 587 Turkish adults (Mage = 37, SD = 15.25) via online self-report questionnaires on FCV, CER strategies, and measures of psychological distress. We tested a multiple mediation model predicting psychological distress from FCV with CER strategies as mediators. The model was significant and among the CER strategies acceptance, rumination, catastrophizing, and blaming others partially mediated the association between FCV and psychological distress. The moderator role of acceptance was also significant, indicating a stronger relationship between FCV and psychological distress among those with more frequent use of acceptance as a CER strategy. Our findings indicate that the use of CER strategies plays a role in the link between FCV and the level of psychological distress. Targeting the use of less adaptive strategies might be an effective way to improve psychological well-being during the pandemic.

Purpose – This study aims to research whether there was any statistically significant difference in work engagement, organizational health, and organizational virtue levels of health workers as per demographic variables such as gender, education status, position title, work format, age, work duration at the health institution, and work duration in the profession. Design/methodology/approach – This research is a study using the general survey model, and in compliance with research objectives, it was configured on the basis of the descriptive model. The research was conducted with the participation of doctors, health staff other than doctors, and administrative staff serving in hospitals affiliated with the Ministry of Health of Turkey in downtown Muş, Bitlis, and Van in eastern Turkey, and hence, the research data were collected from a total of 1023 health workers. Research data were collected with a survey form that contained demographic variables, the Work Engagement Scale, the Organizational Health Scale, and the Organizational Virtue Scale. In the context of the research, the correlation test (Spearman’s correlation) was used, and also, the t-test (the Mann-Whitney U test) was utilized in the comparison of two groups whilst the one-way analysis of variance (the Kruskal-Wallis H test) was employed in the comparison of more than two groups. Findings – In the analyses, it was found that, firstly, there were statistically significant differences in health workers’ work engagement levels as per the variables of education status and work format, secondly, there were statistically significant differences in health workers’ organizational health levels as per the variables of gender, education status, position title, and work format, and thirdly, there were statistically significant differences in health workers’ organizational virtue levels as per the variables of education status and position title. Discussion – This study introduced the concepts of work engagement, organizational health, and organizational virtue, and revealed whether work engagement, organizational health, and organizational virtue differed as per health workers’ demographic characteristics. It is discerned that the findings of this study, which was conducted with the participation of health workers, were consistent with the results of certain previous studies whilst they contradicted the results of certain previous studies.

Author(s): Mehmet Selim DİKİCİ,M. Emin Akkılıç / Language(s): Turkish Issue: Spec. Iss./2023

The aim of this study is to determine whether customer satisfaction has a mediating effect on the relationship between perceived service quality and behavioral intentions. The data required for the research was obtained by applying a face-to-face survey to 432 people selected by convenience sampling method among tourists coming to Istanbul within the scope of medical tourism. Data analysis in the research was done with SPSS 20.0 Process Macro and AMOS 24.0 package programs. In this context, descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis, reliability and validity analyzes were carried out regarding the sample. Finally, the findings were evaluated by testing the research hypotheses. As a result of the research, it was determined that customer satisfaction had a mediating effect on the relationship between all dimensions of perceived service quality and behavioral intentions. From this point of view, it can be interpreted that the high quality of service perceived by medical tourists will lead to increased customer satisfaction and, in parallel, satisfied customers will tend to have behavioral intentions such as repurchasing or recommending to others.
