Kvaišalų geografija posovietiniame mieste: nelegali narkotinių medžiagų apyvarta ir narkomanija Klaipėdoje, 1990-2010 m.

Kvaišalų geografija posovietiniame mieste: nelegali narkotinių medžiagų apyvarta ir narkomanija Klaipėdoje, 1990-2010 m.

Author(s): Liutauras Kraniauskas,Laimonas Beteika / Language(s): Lithuanian Issue: 02/2014

This study explores transformations of local drug geography in Klaipeda, 1990-2010. Using spatial analysis of geocoded data about 1351 cases of drug crime (manufacturing, storing, possession, and sale) and 1510 registered drug users, we researched spatial temporal patterns of drug crime and drug abuse in changing post-soviet urban environment. Data for this study was provided by Klaipeda Police Headquarters and Klaipeda Centre for Addictive Disorders. We found, that key changes within local drug geography started in 1997-1999 and were caused by development of new economy expanding drug sale to anonymous customers. Since the collapse of the Soviet regime, drugs were mostly manufactured, circulated and used within underground social networks of drug users. The main features of those networks were trust and direct communication among drug users and dealers, who regularly were drug users also. Therefore drugs were locally produced, stored, sold and used in the same places; places of drug abuse and drug crime regularly overlapped. Nevertheless spatial patterns of such underground networks were more accidental in their nature, they had not clear attributes of spatial identify within urban environment. But newly emerging drug economy was based on commodity-money relations between drug dealers and drug users and new market regime clearly differentiated places of drug sale and drug use. Drug sale moved from blocks to the night clubs, marketplaces and surroundings of huge shopping centres. Sociologically such change within drug economy of post-soviet city might be interpreted as a shift from subcultural networks, where local knowledge and practices of street pharmacology were transmitted to new users, to the conspicuous consumption of branded and recreational drugs .

Author(s): H. Ibrahim Okatan / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 29/2016

This article examines tobacco and tobacco smoking in the Ottoman Time. There was a continuing debate about whether or not tobacco smoking was allowed in Islam. It is interesting to see that tobacco smoking increased. During that time another issue was that careless smoking caused fire and threatened public order in Istanbul. As a result of this, the State prohibited smoking tobacco by law. This restriction was implemented strictly and those who did not obey the law were punished severely, including the death penalty. In the Ottoman poem, tobacco smoking was worked out extensively. This article reviewed 250 Divan Poems on tobacco and tobacco consumption. These poems were categorised by two groups: The firs group reviews the comfort of tobacco smoking. The second group looks at the prohibition of tobacco smoking. In this study, special focus was paid attention on the life and poems of Şeyhülislam Ebulmeyâmin Mustafa Efendi, the Chief religious official in the Ottoman Empire, who was known as died of tobacco smoking. The debate about the effect of tobacco smoking on health and the view of Islam on tobacco smoking is seen widely in Ottoman Poem.

THE IP CITIZEN

THE IP CITIZEN

Author(s): Zbigniew Widera / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2/2015

One of the most important problems of the modern world is finding a balance between the possibilities of communication technologies and the damage they bring by limiting the citizen’s right to freedom. The answer to the question how to protect a person against the aggressive conduct of corporations and services operating on behalf of politicians is one of the fundamental problems of modern civilization. The user of the Internet is gradually becoming its slave – the IP citizen with a number assigned to him in the net. He is constantly subject to close scrutiny of what he is doing, what he is interested in and what he is thinking about. In the continuous process of exerting influence on him, in the overwhelming world of information he is becoming more and more helpless.

A counselling line for problem and pathological gambling in South Africa: Preliminary data analysis

A counselling line for problem and pathological gambling in South Africa: Preliminary data analysis

Author(s): Dan J. Stein,Adele Pretorius,Heidi Sinclair / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2014

Various countries and states have established telephone counselling lines for people with pathological or problem gambling. Data from such services may contribute to describing systematically the nature of gambling problems in a particular area. To date, however, few data have been published on such a telephone counselling line in a low or middle income country. Method: Data on calls to the telephone counselling line of the National Responsible Gambling Foundation of South Africa were captured over a 6-month period. Such data include socio-demographic variables, the primary reason for calling, the source of the referral, preferred method of gambling, impairment as a consequence of gambling, and history of treatment for psychiatric disorders, comorbid alcohol abuse and illicit drug use. Results: Calls were received from a broad range of people; the mean age of callers was 37 years, the majority were male (62%) and many were married (45%). Primary reasons for calling included the feeling of being unable to stop gambling without the help of a professional (41%), financial concerns (32%), legal problems (13%), pressure from family (10%), and suicidal thoughts (2%). The majority of callers contacted the counselling line after having heard about it by word of mouth (70%). The most common forms of gambling were slot machines (51%) and casino games (21%). Fourteen percent of callers reported having received help for other psychiatric disorders, 11% reported alcohol use disorders and 6% illicit drug use. Conclusion: These data from South Africa are consistent with prior research indicating that pathological and problem gambling are seen in a range of socio-demographic groups, and that such behaviour is associated with significant morbidity and comorbidity. More work is needed locally to inform younger gamblers, gamblers using the informal gambling sector, and unemployed gamblers of the existing telephone counselling lines.

SMELLING THE GHETTO

SMELLING THE GHETTO

Author(s): Victoria Nizan / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

This article deals with allusions to smells and odours in Ruben Ben Shem's diary, an extensive journal that was written in the Warsaw ghetto from November 1940 until April 1943. The paper attempts to define the nature of the gap between allusions to smells related to by the diary writer in contrast to our understanding of the information acquired through reading the diary. The difficulty of the attempt relates to elusiveness of odours which causes them to be difficult to imagine, especially if one wasn't exposed to them beforehand. (Katz 1997: 4)

SPRJEČAVANJE MARGINALIZACIJE MLADIH SKLONIH RIZIČNOM PONAŠANJU U OBRAZOVNOM SISTEMU PRIKAZ ISKUSTVA REALIZACIJE PROJEKTA

Author(s): Sanela Pekić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 4/2019

The school, after the family, is the most important organized system that can bring together almost all children, their parents and many experts from other institutions at the level of the local community. Prevention of addiction is a special type of education for healthy and non-addictive behaviour. School failure or school inadjustment is often the first predictor of risky behavior. In order not to escalate socially unacceptable behaviour, certain measures need to be taken. In this paper it will be presented a pilot project of supporting young people prone to risky behaviour that was implemented in the High School of Transport and Communications in Sarajevo from October 2018. to the end of March 2019. The project was implemented by the Association of Social Workers of Canton Canton in cooperation with the Public Institution „Therapeutic Community Kampus“ of Canton Sarajevo and the Cantonal Centre for Social Work with the support of RIPPO fund. Overall goal of the project was to contribute to development of early detection system for young people under increased risk of addiction, crisis intervention and support in the school environment in cooperation with social welfare institutions. The significance of the project is reflected in a comprehensive approach to selective addiction prevention in the school environment in order to avoid marginalisation of students prone to risky behaviour and to provide support in overcoming of the consequences of the absences from the class and other of risky behavior. The project consisted of activities intended for teachers, professional associates of the school and social welfare services, students and parents. The content of education and the level of support were adapted to the needs of each target group. Long-term results require continuity and mutual cooperation of all participants in the educational process.

« Addictions » et comportements problématiques liés à Internet et aux réseaux sociaux. Synthèse critique des recherches et nouvelles perspectives

« Addictions » et comportements problématiques liés à Internet et aux réseaux sociaux. Synthèse critique des recherches et nouvelles perspectives

Author(s): Didier Courbet,Marie-Pierre FOURQUET-COURBET,Stéphane Amato / Language(s): French Issue: 25 (1)/2020

The explosive increase in the number of Internet users, frequencies and durations of connection, led to many scientific controversies on the question of Internet “addictions” (to online social networks, online gaming, online gambling, online pornography, smartphones). The debates are intensive to know if there are or not real addictions. This article presents a critical synthesis of models and major scientific research on these topics: how to define addictions related to the Internet and social networks? Are they new mental disorders or consequences of pre-existing psychological or psychosocial disorders? What are the risk factors predisposing to excessive and problematic uses and what are the consequences for those who suffer from them? Then we open new perspectives for multidisciplinary research to go beyond the addiction / non-addiction debate. We propose a communicational approach linking production and uses of digital devices and contextualizing problematic behaviors with the Internet. We give leads to better understand excessive Internet uses in their biological, psychological, social and economic complexity.

Zróżnicowanie regionalne skłonności do konsumpcji wyrobów tytoniowych i napojów alkoholowych

Author(s): Mariusz Doszyń / Language(s): Polish Issue: 06/2013

The article presents the issues concerning the use of models for panel data to determine the impact of the human propensity for business processes. The differences between the proposed concept of inclinations and marginal propensities were characterized. In the methodological part are presented models for panel data with fixed and random effects. The study attempted to determine the effect of propensity to consume tobacco products and alcoholic beverages on the average expenditure on these products by voivodships. The author estimated model with both fixed and random effects. The paper presents the process of selecting the explanatory variables. The estimated models were compared by the level of fit of the theoretical to empirical values, and because of the values of selected information criteria (AIC, BIC, HQC). In order to diagnose the properties of estimated models were also conducted: Doornik-Hansen, White, F, Breusch-Pagan and Hausman Tests.

Cooperation between religion teachers and police psychologists in the prevention of domestic violence

Author(s): Anna Zellma / Language(s): English,Polish Issue: 10/2020

This article aims to show the importance of cooperation between religion teachers and police psychologists in preventing domestic violence. The method of analysis of the literature and state documents (e.g. the law of education) is used. The conclusions were presented in a synthetic way. It has been noted that the cooperation of religion teachers with police psychologists serves to eliminate risk factors that can lead to domestic violence. The parties must therefore remain open towards one another, be ready to engage in dialogue and share knowledge and experience in the area of the prevention of domestic violence.
