The Cognitive Value of Hallucinations

The Cognitive Value of Hallucinations

Author(s): Tomasz Sikora / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2015

With beginnings probably dating back to the end of the Middle Paleolithic period, shamanism seems to be predominantly connected with the use of hallucinogenic agents and the experiences resulting therefrom. For this reason it is worth asking how the shamanistic cultural complex could function over such a long period of time in adaptive terms if the substance of its practice and ideology included the processing of information based on hallucinations. In the light of contemporary nomenclature, the latter are understood as inadequate erroneous perceptions. Accepting such a concept of hallucinations, it is possible to explain the long currency of shamanism on the basis of evolutionary cognitive error management theory, costly signalling theory, or evolutionary psychiatric group-splitting theory. However, the dominant approach to the phenomenon of hallucination may be questioned, and it is conceivable that at least some of its contents constitute a mediated projection of subliminal precepts preceding an experience of hallucinations or co-occurring with them. Transformations of hallucinations preceding their entry to the field of consciousness may be governed by the rules of association described by Herbert Silberer’s theory of self-symbolization and those brought to light by such researchers on subliminal perception as Otto Pötzl, Charles Fisher, or Norman Dixon. From this new perspective, a new definition of hallucination must be developed – a definition that will take the actual cognitive value of this phenomenon into consideration and be more adequate for providing a description of the full cognitive dynamics of the shamanistic complex.

Problem notyfikacji przepisów technicznych w związku z ustawą z dnia 19 listopada 2009 r. o grach hazardowych

Author(s): Jakub Pawlowski,Martyna Pawlowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 26/2017

The aim of the article is pointing and presenting methods connected with the usage and the interpretation of the European Union law in accordance to colliding with it Polish law, regulating the games of chance to 3rd of September 2015. Moreover in the paper the problem of possibility of determining the criminal responsibility of the persons establishing or arranging the games of chance in accordance with the Article 107 § 1 of Polish Criminal Fiscal Code and the provisions of the law about the games of chance was presented. Entering into force the law from 19th of November 2009 about the games of chance instead of terminating the notion of administrative limitations of economic activity in the scope of games of chance caused enormous problems with its usage. Another issue which emerged was the lack of notification of technical provisions (among others referring to the products offered by enterpreneurs), what effected also the lack of possibility of establishing the criminal responsibility of persons establishing or arranging the games of chance. Framing of criminal responsability in accordance with the blanket provisions (Article 107 § 1 of Polish Criminal Fiscal Code) does not meet the requirements of transparency and certainty of law. Thus it would be reasonable to reconsider the reformulation of the principles of the criminal fiscal responsibility for illegal establishing or arranging the games of chance.

Zabrana i sankcionisanje dopinga u sportu u državama Evropske unije

Author(s): Dejan Šuput / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1/2008

Legal framework regulating the prohibition and sanctioning of doping in sport in the EU countries is a very interesting topic for research, because of the variety of legal, organizational and financial problems that have to be solved in order to organize and establish effective and efficient mechanism for counteraction of doping in sport. Nowadays, more than ever before in the history, laws and regulations in the most of the European countries treat doping in sports and activities related with production and trafficking of doping substances as a crime. In recent years, it is widely accepted that sport doping is only a part of the wider problem of drug abuse within modern societies. The relation between the international drug trade, doping substances trade and organized crime is obvious. The convergence of doping in sport and organized crime demands a new approach to research and fight against that phenomena. During the past thirty years, all of the EU member states enacted the laws and regulations that have placed a ban for usage of doping substances and methods in sports. Such a laws and regulations comprise variety of sanctions and preventive measures for the sportsmen and sportswoman whose sports activities are involved in doping substances trafficking, smuggling and usage. Besides that, all of the EU countries (except Belgium) ratified the Council of Europe Convention against doping. The new legal framework regulating the prohibition and sanctioning of doping in sport in the Republic of Serbia has been created after the enactment of Anti-doping Law in November 2005. The passage of the new legislative framework regulating the work and jurisdiction of the Antidoping Agency of Serbia was a decisive step in the process of strengthening state capacities aimed at creation of organizational framework needed for systematical fight against doping in Serbian sport. Now, a more challenging and difficult task lies ahead state and sports organizations. That task is a proper implementation of the new regulatory framework and its harmonization with EU legal standards.

Early adulthood is a critical life period in the perspective of choosing lifestyle and searching for meaning in life. Moreover, this period is of high risk to one’s health. Addictions, destructive behavior, accidents, transport crashes and violence, as the most common causes of death and disability among young people, are also associated with lifestyle factors (WHO, 2009). In planning this study, the authors formed the research question whether the stronger meaning in life can predict the healthier lifestyle? Attempting to answer this question, the authors set the goal to evaluate relationships between health-related lifestyle and different dimensions of meaning in life in early period of adulthood. Method. 218 adults (136 women and 82 men), aged 20 to 30 years (M=24,13; SD=3,35), participated in the study. Participants completed three questionnaires: Lifestyle Questionnaire created by the authors, measuring six lifestyle areas (nutrition, physical activity, alcohol and substance use, smoking, sexual behavior and risky behavior); Purpose in Life Test (Crumbaugh and Maholick, 1964) and Purpose in Life Questionnaire (Steger et al., 2006). The information of subjects’ demographic and social status was also recorded. Results. The purpose in life is an important predictor of the healthy lifestyle, i.e. healthier nutrition, less alcohol and other substance use, less tobacco smoking, weaker risky behavior and safer sex. Presence of meaning predicts higher physical activity and weaker risky behavior. No significant associations between health-related lifestyle and search for meaning in life during early adulthood have been determined. Female gender is an important predictor of healthier lifestyle and healthy behaviors. Young women (compared with men) tend to eat healthier, use less alcohol or other psychoactive substance, and demonstrate safer sexual behavior.

The Extent and Distribution of Gambling-Related Harms and the Prevention Paradox in a British Population Survey

The Extent and Distribution of Gambling-Related Harms and the Prevention Paradox in a British Population Survey

Author(s): Natale Canale,Alessio Vieno,Mark D. Griffiths / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2016

To examine whether the “prevention paradox” applies to British individuals in relation to gambling-related harm. Methods: Data were derived from 7,756 individuals participating in the British Gambling Prevalence Survey 2010, a comprehensive interview-based survey conducted in Great Britain between November 2009 and May 2010. Gambling-related harm was assessed using an adapted version of the DSM-IV Pathological Gambling criteria. The previous year’s prevalence of problem gamblers was examined using the Problem Gambling Severity Index. Gambling involvement was measured by gambling frequency and gambling participation (gambling volume as expressed by time and money spent gambling). Results: The prevalence rates for past-year gambling harms were dependence harm (16.4%), social harm (2.2%), and chasing losses (7.9%). Gambling-related harms were distributed across low- to moderate-risk gamblers (and not limited to just problem gamblers) and were reported by the majority of gamblers who were non-high time and spend regular gamblers than high time and spend regular gamblers. Conclusions: The prevention paradox is a promising way of examining gambling-related harm. This suggests that prevention of gambling might need to consider the population approach to minimizing gambling harm.

Addictive use of social networking sites can be explained by the interaction of Internet use expectancies, Internet literacy, and psychopathological symptoms

Addictive use of social networking sites can be explained by the interaction of Internet use expectancies, Internet literacy, and psychopathological symptoms

Author(s): Elisa Wegmann,Benjamin Stodt,Matthias Brand / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2015

Most people use the Internet in a functional way to achieve certain goals and needs. However, there is an increasing number of people who experience negative consequences like loss of control and distress based on an excessive use of the Internet and its specific online applications. Some approaches postulate similarities with behavioral addictions as well as substance dependencies. They differentiate between a generalized and a specific Internet addiction, such as the pathological use of social networking sites (SIA–SNS). Prior studies particularly identified the use of applications, personal characteristics, and psychopathological symptoms as significant predictors for the development and maintenance of this phenomenon. So far, it remains unclear how psychopathological symptoms like depression and social anxiety interact with individual expectancies of Internet use and capabilities of handling the Internet, summarized as Internet literacy. Methods: The current study (N = 334) investigated the interaction of these components in a structural equation model. Results: The results indicate that the effects of depression and social anxiety on SIA–SNS were mediated by Internet use expectancies and self-regulation. Discussion: Thus, Internet use expectancies seem to be crucial for SIA–SNS, which is in line with prior models. Conclusions: SNS use may be reinforced by experienced gratification and relief from negative feelings. Individual competences in handling the Internet may be preventive for the development of SIA–SNS.

The effects of belief in good luck and counterfactual thinking on gambling behavior

The effects of belief in good luck and counterfactual thinking on gambling behavior

Author(s): Myoung-Ho Hyun,Young-Sil Kwon,So-Ra Kim / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2015

One’s belief in good luck, and belief that it is a personal trait, could play a crucial role in gambling behavior, and can lead gamblers to have an irrational anticipation to win and to over-generalize their subjective sense of control. And upward counterfactual thinking has been considered to be a factor that offsets those irrational beliefs. This study examined the effects of belief in good luck and of upward counterfactual thinking on gambling behavior. Methods: The subjects of the study were 52 college students who had been classified as nonproblematic and non-pathological gamblers. They were assigned into one of two groups, distinguished by having either high (n = 25) or low (n = 27) levels of self-perception of luck, as determined by their scores on the Belief in Good Luck (BIGL) Scale. The subjects were assigned to different groups according to their reported experience of upward counterfactual thinking. Results: We found that those who had high BIGL scores spent more money on gambling than those who had low BIGL scores. Moreover, after taking into account the upward counterfactual thinking, the subjects with high BIGL scores showed a dramatic decrease in their expectations of winning. Discussion: The results indicate that to perceive luck as a personal and internal trait could affect gambling, which is one of the cognitive errors for gambling addiction. On the other hand, given that upward counterfactual thinking plays an important role in reducing cognitive errors, it could act as a protective factor against gambling addiction.

Hatching the behavioral addiction egg: Reward Deficiency Solution System (RDSS)™ as a function of dopaminergic neurogenetics and brain functional connectivity linking all addictions under a common rubric

Hatching the behavioral addiction egg: Reward Deficiency Solution System (RDSS)™ as a function of dopaminergic neurogenetics and brain functional connectivity linking all addictions under a common rubric

Author(s): Kenneth Blum,Marcelo Febo,Thomas Mclaughlin,Frans J. Cronjé,David Han,Mark S. Gold / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2014

Following the first association between the dopamine D2 receptor gene polymorphism and severe alcoholism, there has been an explosion of research reports in the psychiatric and behavioral addiction literature and neurogenetics. With this increased knowledge, the field has been rife with controversy. Moreover, with the advent of Whole Genome-Wide Studies (GWAS) and Whole Exome Sequencing (WES), along with Functional Genome Convergence, the multiple-candidate gene approach still has merit and is considered by many as the most prudent approach. However, it is the combination of these two approaches that will ultimately define real, genetic allelic relationships, in terms of both risk and etiology. Since 1996, our laboratory has coined the umbrella term Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS) to explain the common neurochemical and genetic mechanisms involved with both substance and non-substance, addictive behaviors. Methods: This is a selective review of peer-reviewed papers primary listed in Pubmed and Medline. Results: A review of the available evidence indicates the importance of dopaminergic pathways and resting-state, functional connectivity of brain reward circuits. Discussion: Importantly, the proposal is that the real phenotype is RDS and impairments in the brain’s reward cascade, either genetically or environmentally (epigenetically) induced, influence both substance and non-substance, addictive behaviors. Understanding shared common mechanisms will ultimately lead to better diagnosis, treatment and prevention of relapse. While, at this juncture, we cannot as yet state that we have “hatched the behavioral addiction egg”, we are beginning to ask the correct questions and through an intense global effort will hopefully find a way of “redeeming joy” and permitting homo sapiens live a life, free of addiction and pain.

Стигматизација на лица болни од шизофренија и на зависници од дрога и алкохол

Author(s): Mihajlo Popovski / Language(s): Macedonian Issue: 3/2009

The stigma of mental illness is common in the general population, including students. This paper presents results from a study on the features of stigma among students towards people with different mental health disorders, i.e. schizophrenia, drug addiction and alcohol addiction. The results show that students generally stigmatize addiction more severely than schizophrenia. They tend to attribute higher personal responsibility and blame the addiction, as a result of which they express increased anger and fear of addicts, as well as avoidant behaviour towards them. In contrast, students tend to attribute less personal responsibility and controllability to schizophrenia, thus feeling increased pity for people suffering from this disorder, although at the same time they believe that segregation and coercion are most appropriate for them. The study also found two opposing tendencies among students: a concurrent preparedness for helping behaviour as well as a tendency towards discriminatory behaviour against people with different mental health disorders.

SENIORS AND GAMBLING : PLEASURE OR ADDICTION? A FRENCH EXAMPLE

SENIORS AND GAMBLING : PLEASURE OR ADDICTION? A FRENCH EXAMPLE

Author(s): Maryse Gaimard,Matthieu Gateau / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2016

The gambling industry has grown steadily in France, in particular since the new regulation of the online gambling in 2010. Seniors are commonly regarded as a high-risk population. Gaming indeed constitutes one of the most frequent leisure-time activities for seniors, who are an attractive target group for the gaming operators. If they have been much less described and analyzed than those of the younger generations, the seniors’ playful practices can be as problematical. A sociological study was carried out in the Burgundy and Franche-Comte region to investigate the seniors’ behaviors towards gambling and games of chance, through their representations, misbeliefs and intensity of their practices. The results of the survey demonstrate that if seniors can be regular gamblers, their practice is rather often contained and controlled. The transition from work to retirement and reduced incomes can bring about a change in the behavior of high-spending gamblers and make them restrict their practices.

Author(s): Dražen Erkić / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian,Serbian Issue: 2/2017

Drug abuse, whether or no appeared in conservative or liberal societies or any other form it might bespeaked, has always been a serious security problem for mankind. Drug crime represents very complex and dangerous form of crime that involves drugs. That complexity and its harmfulness can be seen in its tight connection with other forms of criminal behavior, for example: human trafficking, money laundering and terrorism. Consequences of drug crime are not only harmful but present in all levels of citizen organizations, especially in local community where citizens in the most direct way realize their rights and interests. Consequences of drug crime in local community are the most direct and very visible so they can be seen as a security, medical and socio-pathological problems. This paper is trying to point out the significance of juxtaposition of drug crime in local community by subjects of security acting in the field. Also for more efficient overview and juxtaposition of drug crime in local community it is necessary to point out its phenomenological and etymologic characteristics and diapason of its manifestations.

PSIHOLOŠKI PROFIL OVISNIKA O HEROINU

Author(s): Nejra Zejnullahu Suljagić / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian,Serbian Issue: 2/2017

Addiction to psychoactive substances is a serious problem in today’s society. It impairs both physical and psychological health, reduces working ability, changes personality traits, shortens life duration and affects an individual and their family and their community. The aim of this research is to define whether there is a specific psychological profile of psychoactive substance addicts and to examine the differences between profiles in terms of socio-demographic characteristics. The research was conducted on the sample of a hundred examinees, all of which were male heroin addicts of average age of M=33.8 (SD=4.9) who were going through a drug addiction treatment to psychoactive substances. The research was conducted in Public Institution Therapeutic Community “Kampus” in the Sarajevo Canton, in the period from 2010 to 2014. The examinees came from the whole country (Bosnia and Herzegovina). The following measuring instruments were used: MMPI-2 and POMPIDOU questionnaire. The sample was taken with reference to the consumed psychoactive substance and the period of the conducted research. Every examinee had an individual approach one month after their coming to the treatment. The examinees were in the state of abstinence, which had been confirmed by regular tests to psychoactive substances. The results gained point to the fact that heroin addicts in most cases have clinically significant increases in the following scales: Psychopathic deviation (Pd), Hypomania (Ma), Psychasthenia (Pt), Schizophrenia (Sc), Depression (D), Posttraumatic stress disorder (PK), Health anxiety (HEA) and Masculinity-Femininity (Mf). When it comes to socio-demographic indicators, the results have shown that certain socio-demographic indicators have a significant influence on the profile of heroin addicts and the differences between them. The results of this research in the area of addiction to psychoactive substances contribute to a better understanding of this complex phenomenon, and they offer a deeper and wider perspective of the structure of the addict’s personality. They can be used in planning preventive addiction programs, in early identification of persons who are prone to addictions, and they are especially useful for rehabilitation and resocialization of addicts, because knowing the structure of the addict’s personality contributes to a better psychotherapeutic treatment.

Author(s): Dragan Todorović,Dajana Perišić / Language(s): Bosnian,Serbian Issue: 2/2017

In this paper we deal with the problem of institutional treatment of addicts on psychoactive substances, with particular reference to the treatment of this population within penal institutions. Addiction treatment is a complex process that involves different phases and activities, and a multidisciplinary approach to this problem. We will briefly outline the most common forms of addiction that we encounter in our environment, as well as the methods and forms of overworking with dependents who are serving prison sentences. In this paper we will also look at our own experience in treating addicts on psychoactive substances that have served the prison sentence in our institution, as well as the difficulties we encounter in everyday work in this field.

INFLUENCE OF DIFFICULT MINING LABOUR ON THE INCREASE OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

INFLUENCE OF DIFFICULT MINING LABOUR ON THE INCREASE OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

Author(s): Felicia Andrioni,Ion Hirghiduş / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

Alcohol drinking in the mining environment is demonstrated by certain researches that were conducted in areas with this socio-economic profile. In this study we want to highlight the following aspects: the socio-cultural determination of alcohol consumption; the worship of alcohol as the expression of a popular culture; the motivation of excessive alcohol consumption through hard physical work that requires such a "therapy" for the recovery of forces; the negative influences of alcohol drinking on the family. This study is based on a socio-anthropological research performed in several stages. The methodological aspects are explained in the study based on the statistical results obtained by applying a sociological questionnaire to a sample of 843 subjects (active miners, all male). The study hypothesis is the following: difficult mining labour causes an increase in temptations to consume alcohol over the levels generally acceptable in the social environment. It is necessary to analyse the phenomenon of alcohol consumption because it has turned into a "cultural" pattern, hiding a reality with serious medical, family and social consequences in general. This survey aims at raising the awareness of community-level decision makers, but also at reducing alcohol drinking. Professional prevention campaigns are required, but they are still lacking. There are no specialists able to change the distorted collective perception of alcohol consumption, but they have to be trained and involved in a specific social work activity.

The first part focuses on the problems of the modern family, especially on the disorganization of family life due to the social situation in our country. Raised issues around unemployment, hovering around family, pervasive alcoholism, violence, aggression, disability-all these “everyday-unusual domestic affairs” may be present in the life of each of the average family. The second part is an evaluation of mentioned above ideas of our native politicians to the improvement of quality of life. Pro-family policy? Indeed, but for whom? I invite to read the article.
