"По-русски говорите": сообщение информации и обратная связь во взаимодействии врача-генетика и Пациента

Author(s): Aleksandr Shirokov / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 2/2019

The article is devoted to the analysis of interactions between geneticists and patients through the perspectives of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. The focus of the research is on how geneticists deliver medical information to their patients and how patients are involved in this process. The primary data are audio recordings and ethnographic observations of genetic counseling sessions conducted in July–December 2018. The study also uses materials from interviews with geneticists and from genetics textbooks that deal with issues of patient-provider communication. The author criticizes some features characteristic of the research on “information delivery” in a medical context. First, such studies are often one-sided: although they analyze how the patient understands information and what it means to him/her, the patient is represented as a passive recipient of information. This article, conversely, argues that the patient is also an active participant in the process of formulating information through various kinds of promptings, clarifications, and responses. Thus, communication of information is a joint achievement of doctor and patient. Secondly, when analyzing information delivery, various expressions, for example, “yes,” “aha,” “ooh,” and such, are considered signals of epistemic status change in conversation analysis. That is, it is assumed that these are signals that the recipient has received the information and understood the message. The question of which part of the message the recipient understood is hardly addressed. This article highlights a specific feature of the interaction between geneticist and patients: the difficulty of achieving mutual understanding. For the doctor, a description of the patient’s condition and his/her diagnosis is “packed” into abstract medical concepts, the explanation of which is problematic during the consultation process. Hence the difficulty of reaching an understanding, which happens either when the doctor himself/ herself begins to use everyday language or when the patient begins to ask for clarification in everyday language (although this can lead to tension). Using medical terms, the doctor gives a report, but it does not explain everything to the patient, and because of the problematic nature of the demonstration of misunderstanding, the patient has almost no way to tell the doctor about it.

(INTER)AKTIVNA NASTAVA ISLAMSKE VJERONAUKE – NOVI PRISTUP UČENJU

Author(s): Hikmet Hekić / Language(s): Bosnian / Issue: 76/2018

Considering variety of pedagogical approaches and methods of educational and upbringing activities in the teaching class of the Islamic religious studies a question comes to mind: Should we persist on approach and method that is primarily oriented towards the content or should we support the approach and the method that is oriented towards students? Contemporary pedagogical theory and practice often point out the weaknesses and deficiencies of classical approach and organisation of teaching process and it stresses upon the need to make improvements therein underlining the necessity to create a contemporary teaching technique that is based upon material and technical possibilities of educational and upbringing institutions and upon capabilities of students. In order to make improvement in education and upbringing process it is needed, among other things, to create methods of learning and teaching that develops freedom and independence in students that will, in turn, enable them to creatively partake in the process end reach solutions for adopting the teaching content on their own. This requires a research study of characteristics and efficiencies of innovative teaching methods. Further, the empirical findings of this study should then be applied in order to create bases for the new methods. This article studies possibilities and the scope for innovation within teaching Islamic religious studies using the (inter)active teaching methods and new approaches to learning that can be built upon rigid, traditional teaching forms, with aim to establish adequate basic processing qualities in the process of adopting information, skills, practices and attitudes that are inspired by religious teachings.

A COMPARISON OF MODERN SCIENCE WITH VEDIC SCIENCE

A COMPARISON OF MODERN SCIENCE WITH VEDIC SCIENCE

Author(s): Subhendu DAS / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2019

THIS IS A REVIEW OF MULTI-DISCIPLINARY RESEARCH ARTICLES ON THE TITLE SUBJECT; PUBLISHED IN VARIOUS PEER REVIEWED JOURNALS; PROFESSIONAL CONFERENCES; AND SCIENTIFIC BOOKS; INCLUDING THE BOOKS OF RELIGIONS. (A) THERE WAS A TIME WHEN VEDAS WERE KNOWN ALL OVER THE WORLD. YOU CAN SEE THE INFLUENCES OF VEDAS IN THE BOOKS OF ALL MODERN RELIGIONS. FOR EXAMPLE; YOGA AND YOGIC POWERS ARE DESCRIBED IN BIBLE AND ALSO IN THE BOOKS OF JUDAISM. THERE ARE MANY HIGH LEVEL MODERN YOGIS ALL OVER THE WORLD WITH MAGICAL POWERS. SAINT JOSEPH OF CUPERTINO HAS DEMONSTRATED LEVITATION; DEFYING GRAVITY; AND HIS CASE IS MOST WELL DOCUMENTED IN THE WESTERN WORLD. YOGIC POWERS SHOW US THAT YOU CAN DISCOVER THE TRUTH; ONLY BY OBSERVING THE NATURE; JUST LIKE GALILEO DID. (B) UNFORTUNATELY; MODERN SCIENCE HAS ABANDONED THE APPROACH OF OBSERVING THE NATURE; AND HAS GONE ON A TRACK DEFINED BY HYPOTHESIS; ASSUMPTIONS; EXPERIMENTATIONS ETC.; TO DISCOVER THE TRUTH. AS A RESULT WE CAN SHOW THAT THE MODERN SCIENCE LACKS THE TRUTH. WE DO NOT KNOW EVEN GRAVITY CORRECTLY. WE DO NOT KNOW WHY PLACEBO MEDICINE WORKS. (C) WE SEE THAT VEDIC SCIENCE GIVES US A VERY MEANINGFUL AND UNIVERSAL DEFINITION OF TRUTH. WHEREAS THE MODERN SCIENCE LACKS ANY SUCH DEFINITION; CAUSING A MAJOR CONFUSION IN RESEARCH ACTIVITIES. (D) THE VEDIC SCIENCE ALSO HAS ANOTHER VERY CRUCIAL DIFFERENCE – IT HAS OBSERVED TWO TYPES OF CAUSES: (I) EFFICIENT CAUSE AND (II) MATERIAL CAUSE; BEHIND EVERY PHENOMENON. ON THE OTHER HAND MODERN SCIENCE CONSIDERS ONLY THE MATERIAL CAUSE. THIS IS WHY VEDIC SCIENCE IS VALID FOR THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE AND FOR ALL TIME; PAST; PRESENT; AND FUTURE. WE WILL ILLUSTRATE ALL RESULTS OF VEDIC SCIENCE WITH OBSERVATIONS IN NATURE. SUCH EXAMPLES WILL BE BEYOND COMPREHENSION OF MODERN SCIENCE. (E) THIS RESEARCH WILL SHOW THAT THERE IS A HEAVEN AND HELL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MODERN SCIENCE AND MODERN ENGINEERING. MODERN SCIENCE THEREFORE IS NOT AND CANNOT BE THE FOUNDATION OF MODERN ENGINEERING

Author(s): Jarosław Lira / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2015

The study analyses the possibility to measure the scale of disproportion in the development of the synthetic feature between spatial objects over a period of time on the basis of relativised values of diagnostic features. The study also proposes the construction of taxonomically relative indices of development according to the approach based on spatial median and it compares this approach with the classic approach proposed by Wydymus (2013). Both approaches are illustrated with a numerical example referring to the economic infrastructure in rural areas of the counties in Wielkopolskie Voivodeship.

A Comparison of Variables Selection Methods and Their Sequential Application: A Case Study of the Bankruptcy of Polish Companies

A Comparison of Variables Selection Methods and Their Sequential Application: A Case Study of the Bankruptcy of Polish Companies

Author(s): Mikhail Zanka / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2020

Research background: Even though in recent decades, a lot of new techniques were developed, there is still a lack of studies aimed at comparing the performance of variable selection methods. Bankruptcy prediction is an excellent example of the conservative research field with the tendency to use classical approaches. Although the results of studies in this field are directly applied in banks and other financial institutions, variables selected for these models can be biased by the author’s preference for one technique. Purpose: This work aims to compare different variable selection approaches and introduce a new methodology of sequential variable selection that can be applied when the low-dimensional model is preferred. Research methodology: This study has been conducted on Polish companies’ insolvency data from the period of 2007–2013. The risk has been modeled with logistic regression; hence variables have been selected with approaches suitable for linear models. Results: The one-step methods did not lead to sufficient dimensionality reduction, while the sequential approach provided compact models keeping the high-performance level. Also, this method allowed us to identify the main financial determinants of insolvency for studied companies, which are the volume of total assets and the ratio of profit to total assets. Novelty: This paper compares different variable selection methods and demonstrates the effectiveness of their sequential application for dimensionality reduction.

A Consequential Contingent Valuation Referendum: Still Not Enough to Elicit True Preferences for Public Goods!

A Consequential Contingent Valuation Referendum: Still Not Enough to Elicit True Preferences for Public Goods!

Author(s): Ewa Zawojska / Language(s): English / Issue: 49/2017

Whether respondents disclose their preferences truthfully in surveys that are used to assess the values of public goods remains a crucial question for the practical application of stated preference methods. The literature suggests that in order to elicit true preferences, respondents should see a valuation survey as consequential: they must believe in the actual consequences that may follow from the survey result. Drawing on recent empirical findings, we develop a model depicting the importance of the consequentiality requirement for truthful preference disclosure in a survey that evaluates a public policy project based on a referendum-format value elicitation question. First, we show that a respondent’s belief that his vote may influence the outcome of the referendum plays a central role for revealing his preferences truthfully. Second, we find that the subjectively perceived probabilities of the successful provision of the public good and of the collection of the payment related to the project implementation not only need to be positive but also to be in a particular relationship with each other. This relationship varies in respondents’ preferences towards risk.

A critical review of “Internet addiction” criteria with suggestions for the future

A critical review of “Internet addiction” criteria with suggestions for the future

Author(s): Antonius J. Van Rooij,Nicole Prause / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2014

In the last 5 years a deluge of articles on the topic of Internet addiction (IA) has proposed many candidate symptoms as evidence of this proposed disease. We critically reviewed the current approach to the measurement and identification of this new excessive behavior syndrome. Methods: Three popular models of IA were discussed: Griffith’s components model; Young’s Internet Addiction Test (IAT); and the criteria by Tao et al. (2010). We selected these models because they are widely cited and propose specific criteria for IA disorder. Our approach is not meant to provide an exhaustive review, but to discuss and critique the most salient trends in the field. Results: The models of Internet addiction share some criteria, including feeling a loss of control over Internet use; ensuing psychological, social, or professional conflict or problems; and preoccupation when not using the Internet. Other criteria inconsistently mentioned include: mood management, tolerance, withdrawal, and craving/anticipation. The models studied here share the assumption that the Internet can produce a qualitative shift to a diseased state in humans. Conclusions: We critically discussed the above criteria and concluded that the evidence base is currently not strong enough to provide support for an Internet addiction disorder. Future research areas are suggested: (1) Focusing on common impaired dimensions, (2) exploring neuroimaging as a model building tool, and (3) identifying shifts in the rewarding aspects of Internet use. Given the lack of consensus on the subject of Internet addiction, a focus on problem behaviors appears warranted.

A Disequilibrium Model for Lei-Denominated Non-Governmental Credit in Romania

Author(s): Cristian-Florin Dănănău / Language(s): English / Issue: 07/2015

We empirically investigate through an econometric approach the Romanian credit market, namely the lei-denominated part of it, and the factors that interact with it. The main goal is to assess whether a credit crunch occurred in Romania during the economic crisis. To this end we employ the disequilibrium model framework, set up in economic literature some 40 years ago. Our investigation takes into consideration the main macroeconomic determinants of this market, that interact with demand and supply. Our approach has in view the macroeconomic variables such as output, interest rates and foreign currency credit. The demand and supply function are estimated through the maximization of a certain maximum likelihood function. The final conclusion is that, based on the estimated model, one cannot detect a credit crunch in the after-crisis period. This paper’s results show that empirically-constructed disequilibrium models can be used to properly describe the behavior of the lei-denominated credit market, by taking necessary precautions.

A Dynamic Approach to Manage the Production Capacity

Author(s): Ion Năftănăilă,Ilinca Hotăran,Georgiana Cioană / Language(s): English / Issue: S1/2009

The purpose of the article “A Dynamic Approach to Manage the Production Capacity” is to identify the main elements that are “overlooked” by the classic literature in this field. After a short inclusion into the definition and methods of capacity planning, we complete this article with our own research. We accentuate the importance of defining bottlenecks, in order to define the relationship between possible production and actual production capacity. The entire article underlines the importance of the governing link, suggesting the necessity for the dynamic approach of the production capacity. In order to face our time challenges we must compare the links within the capacity planning with what is requested of them and not just between themselves. This article provides a classic solution but also opens new ways for future developments.
