POTENCIÁL TRÉNINGU EXEKUTÍVNYCH FUNKCIÍ V ZLEPŠOVANÍ SEBAREGULÁCIE

Author(s): Veronika Zibrinyiová / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 4/2014

The following theoretical study focuses on a current topic of enhancing self-regulation through the executive functions training. We are building upon the ideas of recent findings (e.g. Hofmann, Schmeichel, Baddeley, 2012) suggesting that the training of executive functions has significant potential to improve the level of self-regulation. Our goal is to look at this issue from a theoretical point of view and offer some suggestions for the training implementation. Moreover we provide insight into the training program of the executive functions, its tasks, and its evaluation. We consider this issue to be relevant and important, mostly because of many benefits connected with the higher level of self-regulation and executive functions.

POSTMODERNÉ, KOGNITÍVNE, INTENCIONÁLNE, INŠTRUMENTÁLNE A SEMIO-PRAGMATICKÉ TEÓRIE DOKUMENTÁRNEHO FILMU

Author(s): Martin Palúch / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 04/2015

The author compares and contrasts theoretical approaches which contemporary film theorists and philosophers employ in an effort to capture the essence of nonfiction cinema. He explicates postmodern, cognitive, intentional, instrumental and semio-pragmatic theories of documentary film as we encounter them in contemporary theoretical reflection, especially in works by Gregory Currie, Noël Carroll, Bill Nichols, David Bordwell, Carl Plantinga, or Roger Odin. Detailed attention is paid especially to three concepts/definitions/approaches to documentary production: Documentary as Indexical Record (Currie), Documentary as Assertion (Carroll) and Asserted Veridical Representation (Plantinga). The study aims to stimulate a discussion of Slovak documentary production that would reflect the current state of thinking about documentary film.

Psychosocial Aspects of Perception and Emotional Experience of Older Adults During the First Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Slovakia

Psychosocial Aspects of Perception and Emotional Experience of Older Adults During the First Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Slovakia

Author(s): Miroslava Köverová,Beáta Ráczová / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

The older population is considered one of those with the highest risk of severe coronavirus infection (Public Health Authority of the Slovak Republic, 2020). This study is a part of research focused on the analysis of the psychosocial aspects of the perception and emotional experience of older Slovak adults as a risk group during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Objectives: The first aim of this research was to examine how older adults in Slovakia perceived and experienced the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. We were focused on their negative emotional experience – the levels of perceived stress, anxiety and concern (regarding a fear of COVID-19 infection). The second aim was to identify differences in negative emotional experience in older adults according to demographic characteristics. The final aim was to analyze the demographic and psychological characteristics of those groups of older adults who reported extremely low and extremely high levels of negative emotional experience (perceived stress, anxiety, or concern). Method: The research was conducted online during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants were 607 adults from Slovakia; 429 women and 178 men aged 61-93 (M = 68.97; SD = 4.76). They completed a State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, State version (Spielberger et al., 1983), a Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen et al., 1983), and the authors’ scales focused on the assessment of the levels of fear of COVID-19 infection (concern), satisfaction with health, powerlessness, ability to deal with the situation of pandemic, loneliness, social isolation, and perceived danger of COVID-19 for themselves, their families and friends and people in Slovakia. Jamovi 1.6.15 and IBM SPSS Statistics 25 software (t-test, Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients, one-way ANOVA, Chi-square) were used for data analysis. Results: Descriptive analyses showed that older adults experienced low levels of perceived stress, moderate levels of anxiety, and moderate levels of concern during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. They reported moderate satisfaction with health, low levels of powerlessness, high levels of perceived ability to deal with the situation of the pandemic, moderate levels of loneliness and social isolation, and moderate to high levels of perceived danger of COVID-19 for themselves, their families and friends and people in Slovakia. The second step of the analyses was focused on the differences in perceived stress, anxiety, and concern according to demographic characteristics (gender, employment status, marital status, and household composition). Between-group analyses showed only gender differences in anxiety and concern – women reported higher levels of anxiety and concern than men. The third step of the analyses was focused on the comparison of the demographic and psychological characteristics between the groups of older adults who experienced extremely low and extremely high levels of negative emotions during the pandemic. Two groups were observed only in the case of concern: group 1 with older adults reporting an extremely low fear of COVID-19 infection (n = 51) and group 2 with older adults reporting an extremely high fear of COVID-19 infection (n = 40). Regarding the demographic characteristics, the two groups of older adults differed significantly only in gender – more women than men experienced an extremely high concern that they would be infected with coronavirus. Age distribution was equivalent across both groups – the also comprised of similar numbers of older adults who were single, married, divorced, or widowed and those who lived alone, with a spouse, with a spouse and children, or with children and family. However, significant differences between the two groups were found in psychological characteristics – older adults with extremely high concern reported low satisfaction with health, high powerlessness, low ability to deal with the situation of the pandemic, high loneliness and social isolation, and high perceived danger of COVID-19 for themselves, their families and friends and people in Slovakia. Limits and conclusions: One of the limitations of the research is that no data were obtained from older adults who were clients of social service facilities; mainly due to restrictions and measures existing at the time of data collection. The research sample consisted only of older adults who lived in their home environment and communicated via social networks. Online skills could have enabled them to search for information about the pandemic or to stay in contact with other people. All this could have positively affected their perception and emotional experience during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, in contrast to the clients of the social service facilities. Despite this limitation, the research study has brought important findings. It showed that older adults did not experience the first wave of the pandemic only negatively and uncovered a risk group of older adults which was at increased risk of negative psychological effects (concern) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The identification of people who are most vulnerable in the elderly population is a key element for providing specific and effective psychological or social assistance.

THE ISSUES OF SPEECH COMPETENCE DEVELOPMENT AT FOREIGN LITERATURE LESSONS

THE ISSUES OF SPEECH COMPETENCE DEVELOPMENT AT FOREIGN LITERATURE LESSONS

Author(s): Yurii Rozhkov,Elena Syrotina / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

This article deals with the problems of speech competence development in the system of foreign literature studying. It was established that basic directions of studying in the 7th form are to comprehend the text (emphasizing the theme, main thoughts, making plans of images etc.), develop independent thinking and an ability to analyze and make own judgments. An important task of literature education of V-VII form students is to develop an ability to clearly pronounce their thoughts and to choose and use extracts from the texts in verbal and nonverbal speech properly. Based on these criteria of language development for students of each "language age" we develop our own criteria and levels that serve as guidelines for the organization of language activities at the study of literature. Thus, in the work on the development of students' speech in connection with the study of literature, it is necessary to combine three approaches: psycholinguistic, based on the theory of language activity; linguodidactic, which studies the patterns of teaching native and foreign languages and methodological-literary, which takes into account the possibilities of literary studies, criticism and theory of public speaking.

Minimum age of criminal responsibility in member states of the european union. A legal and psychological assessment of moral development theories and the minimum age of criminal responsibility

Minimum age of criminal responsibility in member states of the european union. A legal and psychological assessment of moral development theories and the minimum age of criminal responsibility

Author(s): Judit Torma / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

The consideration behind setting a minimum age of criminal responsibility and liability in criminal law is based on a scientific assumption that below a certain level of cognitive maturity there is limited ability to apprehend the wrongness or rightness or the consequences of one’s action. Jean Piaget, the first cognitive and development psychologist has established the scale model of moral development of the child ninety years ago. These age-related theories are still prevailing in setting the minimum age of criminal responsibility in most European countries; however, more recent and contemporary research question the usability of Piaget’s findings. The shift in science is reflected in three to six countries’ legislations and in the guidelines and recommendations of the Council of Europe and the European Union.

Cognition As a Natural Kind

Cognition As a Natural Kind

Author(s): Selen Fettahoğlu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

In corvids and apes, cognition evolved convergently instead of being inherited by a shared ancestor. In biology, natural kinds are classified according to common ancestry. So, if we were to apply the same strategy to psychology, cognition among corvids and apes would not be the same natural kind. However, Cameron Buckner claims that cognition is a natural kind. I suggest that by using Ladyman and Ross’s strategy of taking natural kinds as real patterns, we can support that cognition is a natural kind. Cognition seems to have the properties of predictability and compressibility, which are necessary conditions for real patternhood. Thus, convergent evolution examples of cognition, such as that found in corvids and apes, can be the same natural kind.

Medzi rurálnym a urbánnym (zbierka noviel Mila Urbana Z tichého frontu, 1932)

Medzi rurálnym a urbánnym (zbierka noviel Mila Urbana Z tichého frontu, 1932)

Author(s): Karol Csiba / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 6/2024

The collection of short prose by Milo Urban (1904 – 1982) Z tichého frontu. Časové rozprávky (From the silent front. Temporal tales) published in 1932 brought a selection of the author’s mostly magazine-published prose from the second half of the 1920s. The study recapitulates period critical and later literary-historical reflection on the book, revealing its broader socio-cultural context through parallels with Urban’s other work, especially his journalism and autobiographical prose. A key focus of the analysis is Urban’s depiction of the town-village relationship, presented as part of the modernist discourse in interwar Slovakia. Utilizing Roger Griffin’s concepts, the study examines the portrayal of disoriented individuals, whose lack of direction results from societal transformations and atomization. Another theme is the concept of ‘modernist nationalism,’ linked to the search for new certainties influencing human consciousness and sensibility. The study also addresses Urban’s ambivalent definitions of life, shaped by the relationship between regularity and coincidence, which are central themes in his novels.

Nie taki rekin straszny, jak go malują… Wywiad z Justyną Szumacher – polską podróżniczką i miłośniczką nurkowania z rekinami

Author(s): Justyna Szumacher,Justyna Tymieniecka-Suchanek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 14/2024

An interview with Justyna Szumacher – a traveler who dives (not in a protective cage!) with sharks in various places around the world – aims to show that these fish do not pose such a threat to humans as is commonly believed. Szumacher is considered an expert in diving with sharks in Poland, with extensive theoretical and practical knowledge about the behavior of these fascinating fish in their natural environment. It carries out activities aimed at raising awareness of the necessary protection of this apex predator, which is in danger of extinction, and shaping the appropriate perception of these animals by refuting the ethologically false image of a man-eating shark established in popular consciousness by the movie Jaws.

Treatment of speech difficulties and body tics secondary to childhood sexual trauma through a combination of hypnotic age regression and therapeutic coaching: a case report

Treatment of speech difficulties and body tics secondary to childhood sexual trauma through a combination of hypnotic age regression and therapeutic coaching: a case report

Author(s): Joseph Tramontana / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2015

For years, when describing his therapeutic use of hypnosis to individual clients or in various presentations to professionals, the present author has referred to hypnosis as a “tool through which therapeutic change can be enhanced.” One such presentation was titled “Hypnosis as an Adjunct to Psychotherapy”. In his book on hypnotically enhanced treatment for addictions and various CEU workshops to ASCH and other groups 3‒6 on addictions, and more recently one specifically on treatment for gambling addiction, he stressed that many therapies could be enhanced when presented hypnotically. Examples include cognitive behavioral approaches (CBT);8 Yapko9 described treatment of depression integrating CBT and hypnosis. CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), 12-step programs, healing the wounded child within, and others have been utilized in combination with hypnosis by the present author. One publication combining hypnosis with other therapies is titled “Hypnotic systematic desensitization”. In an article on hypnotic approaches to chronic pain management, Jensen and Patterson referred to a meta-analysis by Kirsch et al., They referred to “the additive effects of hypnosis” when combined with other treatments.

TEACHERS' VIEWS OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT OF STUDENTS WITH HIGH-FUNCTIONING AUTISM

TEACHERS' VIEWS OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT OF STUDENTS WITH HIGH-FUNCTIONING AUTISM

Author(s): Natasha Stanojkovska-Trajkovska,Brankica Angelevska / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

High-functioning autism is a pervasive developmental disorder whose prevalence is increasing nowadays. That opens the question about the success in the academic achievements of the students with high-functioning autism and the influence it has in their inclusion in all the aspects of everyday life. Research carried out in this field, shows that the students with high-functioning autism in all-inclusive schools achieve better academic success and therefore it is easier for them to adapt in the environment. The purpose of this research is to determine whether the inclusion, the awareness of the educators in the course of teaching the students with high-functioning autism and the collaboration with the special educators and parents, would benefit the improvement of the academic success. The research was carried out in all the elementary, secondary, public and private schools in the city of Skopje, including 115 participants throughout the period of one year. The results show that high-functioning autism students do not achieve the expected academic results throughout all the parts of education and they are not completely integrated in the community. According to the results of our research, we can conclude that even though our country provides complete inclusion of the students with high-functioning autism, the necessary conditions are not yet met to enable improvement in academic achievement and integration in society. The research was conducted with support of Questionnaire for assessing the awareness and attitudes of teachers about the academic achievement and inclusion in the community of persons with high-functioning autism and Asperger Test for Children. The interview technique was also carried out with some of the teachers from the mentioned schools.

Yaşlılık ve Dini Başa Çıkma: Ömür Dediğin Programı Örneği

Yaşlılık ve Dini Başa Çıkma: Ömür Dediğin Programı Örneği

Author(s): Abdullah Özler / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 4/2024

Old age is a period when physiological, cognitive and psychosocial changes become more evident compared to other periods of life. During this period, there is a decrease in the body’s functional capacity. Besides, memory-related cognivite problems may be encountered. However, death, which is considered a closer possibility at old age, death of family members and relatives, loss of roles and loneliness are some of the psychosocial problems encountered. In this context, the main problem of the study is to identify the psychosocial problems faced by elderly individuals and to evaluate the process of coping with these problems from the perspective of religious psychology. Due to the change in the population structure, the rate of elderly population in our country and the world is increasing day by day. In this context, what the psychosocial problems of elderly individuals are and what methods come to the fore in the process of coping with these problems are important as it will provide data to the science of psychology and religious psychology and to relevant public and non-governmental organizations that work with elderly individuals. In the study, specific to the program “Ömür Dediğin” ıt is aimed to identify the psychosocial problems faced by elderly individuals and to reveal what kind of coping activities, especially religion, play a role in the process of coping with these problems. Within the scope of this study, the “Ömür Dediğin” program, in which elderly participants appeared as guests, was handled and examined as a document. Program sections related to the purposeful sampling technique used in the qualitative research design were identified. In this context, the group of the study consists of all 315 episodes of the “Ömür Dediğin” program broadcast as of 20.10.2023 and the sample consists of 45 episodes of the “Ömür Dediğin” program. In analyzing the opinions obtained in the study, thematic and descriptive content analysis was preferred. According to the results of the research, it was evaluated that carrying out continuous care was perceived as a difficult and troublesome process by elderly individuals due to death anxiety, needing someone else, loneliness, death of spouse or children, and chronic illness of close family members (spouse, children). Although it is seen that the coping methods used may differ depending on the problems experienced, religion has been seen to be an important coping source in this process. It has been determined that belief in fate, prayer, social support, belief in the afterlife, gratitude, perception of test, and reading religious boks, patience are the main religious coping activities used. Elderly individuals benefit from religious coping elements as well as different coping methods in the process of coping with the problems they encounter. Accordingly, making an effort to socialize more, getting a job and occupation, transferring feelings and thoughts to written texts, turning to nature, memory and dreams were determined as some prominent coping methods.

Cultural Anthropology And Cognitive Science: Mapping The Environment

Cultural Anthropology And Cognitive Science: Mapping The Environment

Author(s): Jelena Ćuković / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Cognitive sciences have initiated the revolution in the interdisciplinarity of the research of the human mind, but cultural anthropology as one of the founding disciplines has gradually withdrawn from this group. The reasons for this are manifold, butthe space emptied by anthropology has since then remained as such, or has been filled with predominantly psychological content or the content of cultural neuroscience. In recent years, developments in psychology, neuroscience and AI studies (shifts to constructivism) have led to a renewed call for anthropology to contribute its findings to an interdisciplinary understanding of the human mind and cognition through culture. This shift is evident in the field of environmental and space perception, which is pivotalfor the understanding of the concept of reality. The aim of the paper is to present findings of the comparative analysis of classical anthropological theories and emerging theories in other cognitive disciplines regarding this topic, especially in neuroscience. The broader goal is to emphasize the importance of re-evaluating our categories of scientific disciplines and the separation of nature and culture as a distinguishing feature, and also to begin to fill the gap in the anthropological literature on this topic that hasexisted for almost a decade.

Roditeljski stilovi i ponašanja prema djeci tipičnog razvoja i djeci s teškoćama u razvoju: pregled suvremenih spoznaja

Author(s): Lorena Koštić,Ana Wagner Jakab,Ajana Löw / Language(s): English,Croatian Issue: 1/2024

The aim of this paper was to provide a narrative review of research on parenting styles and behaviours towards typically developing children who have a sibling with developmental disabilities. The paper presents a model of parenting styles and the dimensions that describe parental behaviours and their determinants. After defining the construct of unequal parental treatment, research on its association with developmental outcomes in children are described. The second part of the paper presents a detailed review of findings on unequal parental treatment in families with a child with developmental disabilities. A review of relevant research suggests that unequal parental treatment is often observed in families with a child with developmental disabilities and is manifested in the following contexts: in the perception of typically developing children that their parents do not devote equal attention and time to them as they do to siblings with developmental disabilities, in the involvement of typically developing children in caregiving for their sibling with disabilities, and in the lack of autonomy felt by typically developing children. Unequal parental treatment in these families is associated with the quality of sibling relationships, as well as with the development of internalising and externalising problems in typically developing children. This paper also discusses the limitations of classical theories and research designs associated with the neglect of the bidirectional paths between parenting styles / behaviours and child behaviour, as well as the mismatch between theoretical concepts and methods of measurement of constructs. Finally, guidelines for future research are highlighted, along with recommendations on how existing knowledge can contribute to supporting programmes on the parenting of children with and without disabilities.

Gender differences in repetitive behaviours in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder

Gender differences in repetitive behaviours in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder

Author(s): Matea Behin,Jasmina Stošić,Sanja Šimleša / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

Repetitive behaviours are one of the main criteria contributing to a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), along with deficits in social communication and interaction. They refer to predictable actions that the child displays repeatedly and/ or performs similarly or identically. These actions include a wide range of behaviours such as motor stereotypies, preoccupation with parts of objects, insistence on sameness, limited interests, ritualised behaviours, and sensory hypo- and hyper-reactivity. The prevalence of ASD is steadily increasing, and it is a disorder that has been diagnosed more frequently in boys than girls since its inception. Numerous studies have reported contradictory findings regarding gender differences in the quantity and quality of repetitive behaviours. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether there are gender differences in repetitive behaviours in children with ASD between the ages of 6 and 9 years, as well as to describe these differences. The participants included 50 parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (30 boys and 20 girls), who were between 6 and 9 years old and had (above) average intellectual abilities. All participants completed the Revised Scale of Repetitive Behaviours and the data obtained were statistically analysed using non-parametric methods. The results indicate that girls exhibit more self-injurious behaviours and less restricted behaviours than boys. No statistically significant gender differences were found for the other subscales of the questionnaire, suggesting that other behaviours occur equally in boys and girls. Overall, repetitive behaviours can be considered as an equally moderate problem for both parents of boys and girls.

This article makes an informative overview of a number of current problems in the philosophy of psychology. One of the aims here is to frame the problem area which characterizes the philosophy of psychology. To achieve this, the domain is compared with those of the philosophy of mind and cognitive psychology while also differentiating from them. The interface problem is in focus in the article, both as part of a bigger discussion concerning the four pictures of the mind entwined in its analysis, which influences the clarification of psychological constructs, as well as in terms of philosophy of psychology debates.

The Normativity of Language Games in the Context of Psychoanalysis and Mental Health

The Normativity of Language Games in the Context of Psychoanalysis and Mental Health

Author(s): Ines Skelac / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Language profoundly shapes human perception and social interactions. Sigmund Freud emphasized the role of language in uncovering and addressing unconscious conflicts, particularly in the treatment of mental illness. Ludwig Wittgenstein examined the everyday use of language through his concept of “language games,” thereby revealing its normative function in shaping meaning, behavior, and societal norms. This paper compares Freud’s and Wittgenstein’s approaches to language, highlighting their shared emphasis on its normativity and therapeutic potential. While their perspectives differ — Freud focusing on the unconscious structures underlying speech and Wittgenstein on the rule–governed nature of language use — they both illustrate that language is an active force that shapes human experience rather than a passive medium. Finally, the paper argues that Freud’s insights into the symbolic dimensions of language and Wittgenstein’s emphasis on linguistic practice together suggest the need for a culturally sensitive and holistic approach to therapy.

DIGITAL BELIEFS AND ATTITUDES OF ADULT EDUCATORS IN REHABILITATION AND TRAINING OF ADULTS WITH COGNITIVE NEEDS – PROPOSAL OF A SELF-ASSESSMENT TOOL

Author(s): Adelinda Candeias,George Milis,Marianna Gregoriou,Adriana Felix,Johan Warnez / Language(s): English Issue: 01/2023

Active and successful participation in society of all citizens is the ultimate outcome of an inclusive policy. For people with a disability, active participation is challenging - many conditions need to be met. This work is included in TETRA-S Erasmus´s project Training of educators for transfer of transversal skills: improving competences for real Social Inclusion of people with cognitive disabilities (2021-1-BE02-KA220-ADU-000026913). In order to implement successfully educational strategies for adults with intellectual disabilities, professionals should be aware of their Beliefs on Digital Cognitive Rehabilitation, as previously shown in other studies (e.g., van der Ham IJM, van der Vaart R, Miedema A, Visser-Meily JMA and van der Kuil MNA (2020). With that purpose we adapt the Healthcare Professionals’ Acceptance of Digital Cognitive Rehabilitation). We adapt the 17 items from the original scale focalized in cognitive treatment of patients to cognitive intervention of clients and we create more 10 items to have a more biopsychosocial perspective about digital beliefs of professionals in cognitive intervention with clients with cognitive needs. Base in a small sample from the target population we present the study of content validity of the scale based on the clarity, objectivity and appropriateness of the scale.

Multiple Realizability and Disjunction

Multiple Realizability and Disjunction for the Special Sciences

Author(s): Roque Molina Marchese / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2024

One way to secure the autonomy of special sciences like psychology is to block reductive strategies by assuming that higher-order properties in psychology are multiply realizable. Multiple realizability would then secure both metaphysical irreducibility and dependency by exploring the variety of ways in which higher-order phenomena can be realized in different systems. Originally, a promising way to understand this variability was in terms of the possible realization role played by property disjunction. However, the non-project- ability of disjunctive predicates into explanatory generalizations undermines the multiple realizability strategy mainly because a condition for these generalizations to have scientific weight is that they be based on the existence of natural kinds. Traditionally, disjunctive properties have no reference to kinds. In this paper I explore the character of disjunctive properties as cases of homeostatic property clusters sufficient to be classified as genuine natural kinds, and the consequences for the question of the autonomy of the special sciences.

The Relationship between Empathy and Social Justice from the Social Work Perspective

Author(s): Marina Alexandra Tudoran,Alexandru Neagoe / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Empathy and social justice play a significant role in social work, and the literature extensively supports their connection to this profession. The purpose of this study is to examine whether or not social work students have a high level of empathy that is correlated with their willingness to address social justice problems. The first part of the study examines the relationship between family structure, empathy and social justice. The second part investigates how the level of cognitive and affective empathy can predict students' social justice attitudes.
