Od woli wiedzy do troski o siebie. Filozofia podmiotu Michela Foucaulta w latach 1976–1982

Od woli wiedzy do troski o siebie. Filozofia podmiotu Michela Foucaulta w latach 1976–1982

Author(s): Przemysław Suchanecki / Language(s): Polish Issue: 68/2021

The following article is an exploration of the intellectual journey of the French philosopher Michel Foucault in its latest period, from the Will to Knowledge, first book of the History of Sexuality, up to the later idea of care-of-the-self. The idea of the care-of-the-self is treated here as the culmination of Foucault’s philosophy, as well as its most mature expression. Maturity here means that, according to this concept, the subject is not perceived as the passive outcome of games played between the forces of knowledge and power, as it was presented in the writings of Foucault from the 1960s and 1970s, but, thanks to his own actions, directed at himself, so called practices of the Self, the subject is able to create itself, in separation from the outside influences that bind him. In the context and in contrast to the idea of the care of self is the idea of self-knowledge, a solely intellectual perspective, for which – according to Foucault – the care of the self was abandoned by philosophers for many centuries. A part of the goal of this study is to demonstrate that the concept of the care of the self was introduced through a conceptual evolution, in which certain ideas, gradually changing their meanings, morphed into other ideas, to arrive at the point where the ancient Greek idea of epimeleia heautou, care of the self, was necessary to be introduced. The principal sources for Foucault’s analyses were the writings of Stoics and Epicureans from the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D., as well as the Plato’s dialogue The First Alcibiades. A method of close-reading of the published works of Foucault and the transcripts of his lectures from a period of 1976 to 1982 was used to prove the above mentioned argument. The central goal of this thesis was largely accomplished – it has been demonstrated that Foucault, by examining various Stoic and Epicurean practices of the Self, showed that the subject is not determined to be formed solely as a result of the games of knowledge and power. Thanks to the concept of care of the self, Foucault had drawn a much larger margin of freedom for the individual, than he did in his earlier works.

Porozumenie a produkcia slovnej zásoby v ranom veku: komparatívna prípadová štúdia

Author(s): Daniela Slančová / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 2/2023

The study deals with a longitudinal comparison of speech development through early age vocabulary acquisition between two siblings, girls. The age difference between them is three and a half years. As a research instrument, the Slovak adaptation of the Test of Communicative Behaviour (TEKOS I, II) was used, which made it possible to set uniform assessment parameters. Both children were observed from 8 to 35 months of their age, i.e. the full of scope of possibilities that TEKOS provides. The longitudinal aspect was observed on the basis of the mean index of vocabulary acquisition in each of the observed months on the one hand, and with respect to the individual lexical items on the other. A particular emphasis was given on the comparison of active and passive vocabulary with respect to its quantity and qualitative differentiation of its acquisition. The results of the comparison confirmed the thesis about predictability, stages and individual differences in early speech development. At the same time, it confirmed the fact that the later onset of production and smaller active vocabulary at early age, considering a higher degree of comprehension is present in one child, draws level with the other child who showed higher values for active vocabulary, but was characterized by a smaller degree of qualitative differentiation of comprehension. The lexical linguistic worldview of both girls was similar in my ways; although, it also reflected their individual life experiences, and there were also overlaps with regard to the linguistic worldview of children who were in the earliest stages of acquiring the Slovak language, determined on the basis of a large TEKOS I sample.

The article focuses on the influence that online discussion comments have on the character of reactions made by pupils in the discussion thereafter. The research tool included an online article with discussion comments in four different versions: A) positive comments supporting the ideas of the text, B) comments questioning the information in the text, C) negative comments evoking fear, D) offensive comments primarily directed at the author of the text. The results show that pupils react differently in the discussion. There actions depend on the nature of the preceding fictional comments. Pupil comments vary in terms of the expressions and degree of media literacy and critical thinking, as well as the manifestations of positive or negative emotions.

IDENTIFYING THE LEVEL OF EXPERIMENTATION AND EXPLORATION OF THE PHYSICAL REALITY OF THE PRE-SCHOOLER

IDENTIFYING THE LEVEL OF EXPERIMENTATION AND EXPLORATION OF THE PHYSICAL REALITY OF THE PRE-SCHOOLER

Author(s): Eugenia Nadia Ungureanu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 37/2024

The cognitive structure of an individual is an organized complex that results from the cognitive processes through which he acquires and uses knowledge. New ideas and information can be learned and retained to the extent that relevant or appropriate concepts are clear and available in the individual's cognitive structure and serve as an anchor for new ideas and concepts. When the new information discovered acquires meaning for the child through interaction with existing concepts, learning is meaningful. Using discovery learning in preschool groups, as the predominant type of learning, we noted that discovery learning is most successful when children have preliminary knowledge and go through some structured experiences. The important idea is that preschoolers are more likely to remember the concepts they discover on their own. If the didactic strategy is specific to learning through discovery, the child has a personalization of learning, he will express his points of view, he will ask questions to understand, he will cooperate in an exchange of ideas with his peers, he will be a partner in learning, he will demonstrate what he can do with what he knows.

COPING MECHANISMS AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS

COPING MECHANISMS AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS

Author(s): Victoria CONDREA / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 37/2024

Recent technological advancements have paradoxically led to spiritual discomfort and stress due to rapid changes, potentially causing severe mental illnesses. This study explored the link between psychological mechanisms and the quality of life in type 2 diabetes patients. Diabetes mellitus is a major medical issue characterized by high blood glucose levels that damage various organs. Effective management requires both medication and psychological intervention. This research assessed defense mechanisms and quality of life in 33 type 2 diabetes patients, divided into two groups based on disease duration. Using the SF-36 questionnaire and the Lifestyle Index, the study found that intellectualization and denial were the primary defense mechanisms. Patients using intellectualization focused on theoretical aspects of diabetes to avoid emotional distress, while those using denial ignored symptoms and delayed medical consultation. SF-36 results indicated that patients rated their quality of life as below average, with physical functionality scoring highest and role limitations due to physical and emotional problems scoring lowest. Adopting substitution as a defense mechanism positively impacted perceived quality of life by promoting engagement in activities that enhance well-being and social interactions. The findings emphasize the importance of psychological support in managing diabetes, aiding patients in accepting and adhering to treatment.

Educational and Therapeutic Intervention in the Context of the Profile of Characteristics of Children with Down Syndrome

Educational and Therapeutic Intervention in the Context of the Profile of Characteristics of Children with Down Syndrome

Author(s): Renata Biernat / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

This article addresses issues concerning the nature of the most common chromosomal disorder. It indicates the causes, characteristics, behaviors and problems that make up trisomy of chromosome 21. The learning and functioning process of people with Down syndrome (DS) is not determined solely by an extra chromosome. The need to identify the factors and conditions that need to be taken into account in the process of activating individuals burdened with an extra chromosome seems therefore legitimate. Theoretical inquiries into the similarities and differences of children affected by Down syndrome have important implications in the areas of education and rehabilitation. The cooperation of parents with the school promotes the dynamization of the child’s development in both environmental contexts. The choice of the form of special education (in an inclusive, integrative or segregated stream) should be an expression of a  thoughtful decision by parents, taking into account a  number of factors, such as: the profile of the characteristics of the child with DS, the effects of previous support for his development, parental involvement and expectations, and the availability and conditions offered by a particular school. As more and more pupils with Down syndrome are being placed in mainstream institutions, it seems that the need to promote knowledge of their development and how to take educational and therapeutic measures is still relevant.

The findings obtained regarding collaboration emphasize the need for initiatives aimed at identifying knowledge levels in relevant interdisciplinary subjects and areas, as well as addressing potential issues, to propose recommendations. Therefore, this research aims to determine the knowledge, awareness, attitudes, and opinions of final-year psychology students regarding language-speech therapy/disorders and collaboration. In the first stage of the study, 67 participants (60F [89.6%]; 7M [10.4%]; mean age = 22.85) were involved, while in the second stage, 65 participants (59F [90.8%], 6M [9.2%]; mean age = 23.28) participated. Two equivalent questionnaires were developed to be administered before and after the course following a review of the relevant literature for data collection purposes. The data were collected online but with the assistance of a researcher. Descriptive analysis was used for the quantitative data obtained in the study. It was found that participants had knowledge about language and speech therapy and disorders before the course, but this knowledge was not sufficient to enable collaboration. After the course, an increase in participants' knowledge level and a better command of the terminology used in the field of language and speech therapy were observed. It is believed that the training provided will be beneficial in improving the understanding of their professional roles in the collaborative process, understanding the role of other professionals better, and fostering a more cooperative collaborative attitude.

In defense of psychoanalysis

In defense of psychoanalysis

Author(s): SAM Vaknin / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2020

Storytelling has been with us since the days of campfire and besieging wild animals. It serves a number of important functions: amelioration of fears, communication of vital information (regarding survival tactics and the characteristics of animals, for instance), and the satisfaction of a sense of order (justice), the development of the ability to hypothesize, predict and introduce theories and so on. We are all endowed with a sense of wonder. The world around us in inexplicable, baffling in its diversity and myriad forms. We experience an urge to organize it, to “explain the wonder away”, to order it in order to know what to expect next (predict). These are the essentials of survival. But while we have been successful at imposing the structures of our mind on the outside world – we are less successful when we try to cope with our internal universe.

'Consciousness, science and spirituality: the broad conceptualization of consciousness through the prism of extending to the new physics

Author(s): Vernon M. Neppe / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

Consciousness’ cannot adequately be conceptualized unless we apply several different prongs. This paper is divided into three sections. 1. A perspective on Consciousness: Improving on the EPIC prongs. Section 1. 2. The 12 prongs of Consciousness: PIERCED MOCKS. Section 2 linked with WH adverbs. 3. The Elusive Mystery Solved: The Gimmel of Consciousness Section 3. Ultimately, Consciousness can be an important component of understanding not only psychology and medicine but physics and the new discipline of Dimensional Biopsychophysics. We likely cannot understand consciousness without recognizing that there are multiple dimensions. In this paper, I’ve extended these concepts to more than just the EPIC prongs. Journal of Psychology and Clinical Psychiatry Perspective Open Access Each prong necessarily comes with further inter-related prongs making up a dozen different ways of conceptualizing consciousness and ensuring it is remembered by the new more extensive mnemonic “PIERCED MOCKS.” (Paradigmatic Level; Information —Meaning; Essence; Relative to— From framework of; Cybernetic; Experience—Existence; Dimensions; Medical; Overlapping dimensions; Covert—Overt; Kind of psychological consciousness; and Summation. In this paper, I propose for the first time, 54 examples of CORD, standing for Consciousness Overlaps through Relative Dimensions (CORD). Essentially CORD applies overlaps across dimensional domains of SpaceTime-Consciousness extending to the 9 finite dimensions plus the infinite continuity. There are now 41 States of Consciousness, with 12 Traits, plus 1 mixed condition. Additionally, medically, some conditions are ‘normal’, some ‘pathological’ mainly ‘neurological’, some involve altered consciousness, and some events involve the spiritual or other kinds of extended consciousness, with some not classifiable. ‘Any of these 54 might vary significantly in classification in individual instances.

Emotional intelligence within the framework of the ability model: A nomological network analysis of a situational judgment test

Emotional intelligence within the framework of the ability model: A nomological network analysis of a situational judgment test

Author(s): Sabry M. Abd-El-Fattah / Language(s): English Issue: 6/2018

This study utilized a nomological network analysis approach to empirically validate the Arabic version of the Situational Judgment Test of Emotional Intelligence (SJTEI-AR). A nomological network analysis includes a within-network and a between-network construct validation. The sample of the study consisted of 236 Egyptian undergraduates. The within-network construct validation confirmed the multidimensionality of the SJTEI-AR. The three correlated factor model of the SJTEI-AR fit the data better than the one factor model and the hierarchical model and it was invariant across gender. Females scored significantly higher than males on the utilizing own emotion factor of the SJTEI-AR. The between-network construct validation showed that the SJTEI-AR significantly predicted academic achievement and personality dimensions. The predictability of the SJTEI-AR was evident by significantly predicting academic achievement after taking into account the effect of gender and personality dimensions.

An unusual case of recurrent cannabis induced flashbacks

Author(s): Alexander Maksymenko,Kodjovi Kodjo,Adenike Ishola,Oluwole Jegede,Khandaker Taher,Tolulope Olupona,Ayodele Jolayemi / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2018

Flashbacks are sudden, involuntary, and vivid memories of past personal experiences. In many cases, these powerful memories are closely linked with traumatic events.1 The association of psychedelic drugs such as Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) or Phencyclidine (PCP) with flashbacks is well documented.2 Although the association of Cannabis with flashbacks is well known, such phenomena are not well documented and its pathophysiology still appears elusive.3 The nosology of Cannabis induced flashbacks in the DSM-54 describes such phenomenon as “Unspecified Cannabis related disorder” which by definition does not meet the full criteria of any specific Cannabis related disorder. The use of Cannabis is considered illegal under federal law, however according to the 2013 surveys of National Institute of Health (NIH), Cannabis use has increased dramatically over the past decade. Although, about 9.5 percent of Americans reported use of Cannabis, 30 percent of users meet the criteria of Cannabis use disorder.5 Cannabis induced flashbacks can be misdiagnosed as symptoms of psychosis. With increasing prevalence of Cannabis use, there is a need to provide mental health professionals with the awareness of this phenomenon. The topic of Cannabis causing flashback is of clinical interest, as well as its prognosis and treatments.

The broader autism phenotype: expanding the clinical gestalt of autism and broadening DSM V criteria of autism spectrum disorder

Author(s): Michael Fitzgerald / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2018

The clinical gestalts of autism are very broad and much more heterogeneous than professionals realise. The diagnostic and statistical manual of the American Psychiatric Association DSM V,1 gives a more narrow and condensed description of what autism is in the twentieth century. DSM1 focuses on problems with socioemotional reciprocity, non-verbal communication and difficult interpersonal relationships, restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, early onset and functional impairment. First, it’s necessary to flesh out the autism spectrum disorder gestalts as it presents to experienced clinical practitioners. It is the opposite of the, “tick box”, approach to diagnosis, so common today. It focuses on the phenomena, the clinical gestalt as they would have been focused on in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, an approach that has faded into the background in the late twentieth and early twenty first century.2 It is critical at this point of the twenty first century that we re-engage with phenomenology and with the clinical gestalt of psychiatric conditions neurodevelopment disorders, which show a great deal of overlap with much mixed phenomenology.

Kompetencje percepcyjne osób młodych w zakresie muzyki artystycznej a wiek badanych. Refleksje nad edukacją muzyczną

Author(s): Beata Bonna / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

The paper analyses two preliminary epistemological problems in Robert Spaemann’s philosophy that have not yet been addressed as mutually linked. The common root of both problems lies in the way Spaemann specifically applies Kant’s statement “being is not a real predicate”. The first problem concerns the criteria for distinguishing between waking and dream cognition, the second the criteria for distinguishing a living being from a simulation. The analysis shows, among other things, the broader context of Spaemann’s epistemological position, its three main characteristics, and Spaemann’s specific use of the term Anerkennung (“acknowledgement”), which he adopted from German idealism.

Doubt and Suspicion among the Deaf and its Relationship to Social Skills

Doubt and Suspicion among the Deaf and its Relationship to Social Skills

Author(s): Mu'tasem M. Al-Masa'deh,Hanan M. Takash,Omayya M. Al-Hassan / Language(s): English Issue: 7/2024

This study aimed to explore the relationship between feelings of doubt and suspicion among deaf students in deaf schools in Zarqa city and how these feelings affect their social skills. It also aimed to understand the extent to which these feelings affect students' ability to communicate and interact socially and to determine the prevalence of this phenomenon among deaf students. The study sample comprised 45 deaf children from deaf schools in Zarqa city, aged 12 to 18 years. The pupils were randomly chosen from Al Amal School for Deaf Education in the city to guarantee diverse representation within the sample. The researchers used the Doubt and Skepticism Questionnaire and the Social Skills Questionnaire. In this respect, there is a strong negative relationship between doubt and suspicion and the social skills of deaf students; for example, the correlation coefficient is -0.68 (p= 0.01), which states that for any unit increase in the level of doubt and suspicion, social skills decrease. Where the mean score was 4.2 for those students whose level of doubt and suspicion was low, the mean score is 2.8 for those with high levels of doubt and suspicion. A high level of doubt and suspicion was expressed by 35%, and a moderate level by 45%. The effect of age on levels of doubt and suspicion was significant at p = 0.02, with a higher mean score across the older students: 4.0 for those aged between 16 and 18 years and 3.1 among the younger age group. The communication effectiveness also decreased when the levels of doubt and suspicion were higher: the students scored 4.3 at low levels and 2.9 at high levels.
