Mentoring and coaching on an organizational level

Mentoring and coaching on an organizational level

Author(s): Paul Marinescu / Language(s): English Issue: 11/2010

This paper is aimed at suggesting a few of the advantages of mentoring and coaching that could be equally beneficial to employees, managers and organizations. Organizational performances can be increased if people understand the sense of their development in connection to the development of competencies that are so necessary to organizational performance. The nuances of coaching and mentoring activities emphasize two professions that, if well dosed, can provide satisfactions to both the individual (employee) and the organization. Along with other methods and techniques (NLP, social intelligence, emotional intelligence), coaching and mentoring allow for synchronized actions to be taken in order to achieve organizational development.

Postawy przedsiębiorcze młodzieży w najmniejszych miastach regionu łódzkiego

Postawy przedsiębiorcze młodzieży w najmniejszych miastach regionu łódzkiego

Author(s): Anita Kulawiak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2021

The aim of the article is to define and assess the entrepreneurial potential of young people and, against that background, to draw attention to barriers that potentially, in the future, may hinder young people from entering the role of entrepreneurs. This analysis is based on the concept of attitude by S. Nowak (1973). Therefore, the study took into account its three components – cognitive, emotional-evaluating and behavioural. The article is based on the analysis of the literature on the subject and field research with the use of a questionnaire. The research group consisted of high school students from selected cities of the Łódź region (Poland) where there is at least one public secondary school. The research revealed that the respondents are characterised by a well-balanced level of the individual components of their attitude, which means that both the level of their knowledge about entrepreneurship, their emotional attitude to this phenomenon, and the willingness to undertake their own activity are at a balanced level. The local environment remains the greatest barrier to the full development of entrepreneurial attitudes of young people in the study area.

Denominal verbs and creativity in child Romanian

Denominal verbs and creativity in child Romanian

Author(s): Adina Camelia Bleotu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

The current paper looks at the meaning of denominal verbs, i.e. verbs derived from nominal roots, through an experiment testing how Romanian children (Mean age: 4, Age range: 3-5) and adults understand nonce (non-existent) denominal verbs created from existing nouns such as a cireşi ‘to cherry’ or a vulpi ‘to fox’. We show that children tend to be more “literal” in their interpretation, understanding such novel denominal verbs as actions/processes involving the actual entity denoted by the nominal root. In contrast, adults prefer ‘figurative’ interpretations in certain contexts, for instance, when the nominal root refers to an animal (a vulpi ‘to behave like a fox’). The results can be explained either cognitively, through children’s preference for literal interpretations at this stage in language acquisition, or structurally, through a preference for a structure which is simpler from a lexico-syntactic point of view, combining mostly action “light” verbs (rather than a whole range of light verbs) with nouns (rather than roots or OBJECT like N entities). In addition, we notice that both children and adults show an animacy bias, mostly producing sentences referring to animate entities, as well as an intransitivity bias, using intransitive verbs more than transitive ones.

Mine or Alien? The Experience of Body and Corporeality in Sudden Vision Loss

Mine or Alien? The Experience of Body and Corporeality in Sudden Vision Loss

Author(s): Kornelia Czerwińska / Language(s): English Issue: 62/2023

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The goal of the article is to describe the specific perceptions of corporeality of an adult who experiences sudden loss of vision. Special emphasis is put on the process of creating a new representation of one’s body. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The text focuses on the issues of deconstructing one’s self-image due to the change in experiencing one’s body, temporary incapability of performing daily activities, and problems with avoiding pain and discomfort. A literature search and analysis were conducted. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The main consequences of vision loss in adulthood are presented. A process of creating a new representation of one’s own body is described in reference to the concept of the stages of adjustment to vision loss. RESEARCH RESULTS: When comparing the current appearance and functionality of their body to the situation from before vision loss, persons with acquired vision impairment have a sense of alienation of their body. Along with the loss of vision as a basic cognitive tool, they experience disintegration of their physical “self,” loss of confidence in their other senses, and overall bodily inadequacy. The negative approach to their own corporeality tends to be reinforced by reactions of other people. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The attitudes and emotions towards one’s body influence the dynamics of adjustment to vision loss, including the motivation of a blind person to actively participate in the rehabilitation process. Psychological rehabilitation should support a person who is losing vision in deconstructing the corporeal ‘self’ and reintegrating a new body image. The issue of the changing body image in the situation of sudden vision loss in adulthood has not been sufficiently researched. There is a need to undertake studies focused on this issue.

Particularități ale limbajului și comunicării în TSA

Particularități ale limbajului și comunicării în TSA

Author(s): Ioana Dârjan,Loredana Al Ghazi,Mihai Predescu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2023

Autism spectrum disorders (AST) are a complex and puzzling cluster of disorders in which social isolation, communication difficulties, and the presence of peculiar and/or repetitive behaviors, in various degrees, are the main characteristics. These characteristics are interlinked and share similar brain and cognitive functioning specificity. This paper focuses on communication and language disorders, their particularities in persons with AST, and their impact on differential diagnostic and specific interventions. Efficient therapeutic strategies and techniques for persons with ASD should address these strong correlations and overlaps between the specific social behavior development and the particularities of using language and communication in an ecological paradigm.

Program de intervenție logopedică pentru dezvoltarea limbajului la preșcolarii din grupa mare

Author(s): Iulia-Maria PAȘCALĂU (SICOE) / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2023

This paper aims to identify the developmental characteristics of language in preschool children, capturing the impact of the speech therapy program on language development, and utilizing the principles of the TALK program in speech therapy intervention. The study sample consisted of 22 preschoolers, aged between 5-6 years, from a kindergarten in Cluj-Napoca. After dividing the participants into two groups, control and experimental, the evaluation was performed using three assessment tools: the Curriculum TALK, Portage (Language subscale), and the Logopedic Album. A speech therapy intervention program was implemented for the experimental group, followed by a final evaluation conducted using the same assessment tools. After collecting the results from pre and post-tests, all data were centralized in an SPSS database for processing. Thus, by using the paired samples t-test (hypothesis 1), the independent samples t-test (hypothesis 2), and Pearson's bivariate correlation (hypothesis 3), it was found that all research hypotheses were confirmed.

The Socialization of Stay-behind Children in the Republic of Moldova Following Labour Migration of their Parents

Author(s): Elena Vaculovschi,Galina Ţurcan / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The labour migration of parents influences stay-behind children, their state of mind and their socialization process. The influences can be both positive and negative. This article analyses how the labour migration of parents from the Republic of Moldova to the European Union influences the process of socialization of stay-behind children and explores the involvement of public authorities in the socialization of these children. Data on which the paper is based were collected in the Republic of Moldova from December 2021 through April 2022, in the course of the development of the CASTLE project. The paper reflects the opinions of members of the transnational families on stay-behind children's socialization. The socialization process of children left at home following the labour migration of their parents faces several challenges. The knowledge of these challenges and their causes can contribute to the establishment of directions and mechanisms for the realization of public policy oriented towards solving children’s social challenges. Given current conditions, organized efforts are required from all socialization agents for the effective socialization of stay-behind children.

A Cognitive Semantics analysis of David Goggins’ idea of “transforming” mindset

A Cognitive Semantics analysis of David Goggins’ idea of “transforming” mindset

Author(s): Anna Drogosz / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

The objective of the paper is an analysis of how David Goggins describes his life in his book Can’t Hurt Me. The analysis was conducted within the methodological framework of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Blending Theory. It has been established that the metaphors life is a journey and aspects of the self are individuals at war provide coherence to the story of his life, while conceptual blends are a mental tool used to reframe a situation and himself. As a result of implementing those blends in his thinking, David Goggins has developed a mindset that allowed him to transform from a broken teenager to “the strongest man alive”. This case study reveals how specific conceptual blends may impact not only cognition and language in general, as is argued in Cognitive Semantics, but also one’s emotional state, and consequently one’s physical performance.

Особенности становления социально-культурной активности дошкольников как условия когнитивно-эмоционального развития в новом цифровом обществе

Author(s): Yulia Valerievna Batenova,Sergey Vladimirovich Tipushkov,Oksana Gennadievna Filippova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 5/2023

Introduction. The article presents a theoretical review and an experimental study of preschoolers’ cognitive and emotional development in the digital era. The purpose of the research is to identify and clarify the synergetic effect of creating an event–organized educational space for joint activities of children and adults in the implementation of a complex of various types and forms of cultural practices aimed at developing agency and initiative in preschool children within the framework of socially transformative activities in digital society. Materials and Methods. The study follows the basic principles of the synergetic approach. In order to obtain empirical data, the following methods and techniques of psychological assessment were used: (1) structured observation of children’s joint activities, (2) social emotions inventory, and (3) G. A. Uruntayeva and Yu. A. Afonkina’s ‘Studying the effectiveness of social and personal motive’ inventory. The sample consisted of 56 preschoolers. In order to detect the randomness of the results and track the dynamics, the experimental data were subjected to mathematical processing (Wilcoxon's Ttest, which ensures the validity and reliability of the results obtained). Results. The research findings show that the use of a synergetic approach and a complex of various types and forms of cultural practices, such as a creative workshop, a research quest, game simulation modeling, design, collecting, and studio work have a significant impact on the indicators of older preschool children’s social agency as a condition for their cognitive and emotional development. The study confirms the assumption that achieving a high level of preschoolers’ social agency is possible provided that an event-organized space of joint activities of children and adults is created in the educational process of the kindergarten. Conclusions. The article concludes about the effectiveness of the synergetic approach in the implementation of a set of different types and forms of cultural practices as conditions for preschoolers’ cognitive and emotional development in the new digital society. The authors emphasize that the use of a synergetic approach and a set of cultural practices in educational practice increases the level of initiative, independence, and responsibility in children, and contributes to redirecting their attention from digital devices to the peer-group and developing positive relationships based on verbal communication and cooperation between peers and adults through the amplification of the creative experience of cognition, application the surrounding objects in a new quality and transforming them.

Роль насилия и фальсификаций при подготовке протоколов допросов эпохи сталинизма

Роль насилия и фальсификаций при подготовке протоколов допросов эпохи сталинизма

Author(s): David Brandenberger / Language(s): Russian Issue: 43/2023

This article shows the problematic nature of modern studies that consider interrogation protocols of the Stalinist era to be reliable sources in their analyses. To begin with, these studies use primitive and inconsistent methodologies in their analysis of the interrogation protocols. Most of them approach the problem without the appropriate level of criticism, expressing little or no doubt about the content of these documents. Others, which claim to have adopted more specific methodological approaches, often base them on unverified hypotheses instead of empirically-proven principles. Secondly, these studies ignore recent work in neuroscience and cognitive, social, and clinical psychology that shows that coercion and torture undermine the ability of those under interrogation to give credible testimony. Biomedical studies have demonstrated that extremely stressful conditions (torture, coercion, blackmail, fear, deprivation of sleep and food, etc.) impair the function of the mind and erode its ability to retrieve reliable information from memory, especially affecting the accuracy and clarity of these recollections. Such techniques can significantly distort the testimony of detainees and even force those under interrogation to change their testimony, to repeat false information provided by the investigator or to falsely incriminate themselves. Thirdly, these studies overlook the fact that state security officials of that period systematically falsified interrogation protocols. Protocols, as a rule, were drawn up by the investigators and then were simply signed by those under interrogation — a practice that raises questions about how accurately these protocols convey the actual words, expressions and meanings contained in the elicited testimony. What’s more, many investigators are known to have often added details or to have embellished the confessions, while others made up entire conspiracies from scratch, before forcing the suspects to sign protocols recording their false confessions. This article illustrates these theses with evidence from the case of A. V. Putintsev, a state security investigator between 1941–1954.

The Relationship Between Digital Game Addiction, Executive Functions and Impulsivity in Early Adolescents

The Relationship Between Digital Game Addiction, Executive Functions and Impulsivity in Early Adolescents

Author(s): Tuğba Bozyiğit,Selin Yılmaz / Language(s): English Issue: 28/2023

The current study was largely concerned with the association between digital game addiction, specific cognitive functions especially, three components of executive function (inhibition, set shifting and working memory) and impulsivity in early adolescents. Sampling consisted of 6th (55.1%) and 7th (44.9%) grade middle school students (36 females and 62 males). The mean age of the students was determined as 12.35 years (SD =0.75; age range, 10–14 years). Digital game addiction, inhibition, set shifting, working memory, and impulsivity were evaluated via Digital Game Addiction Scale (DGAS), Stroop Test TBAG Form, Trail Making Test (TMT), Wechsler Memory Scale-III Letter-Number Sequencing Subtest (WMS–III/LNS) and Short Form of Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS- 11-SF), respectively. According to the correlation analysis results, selective and complex attention, inhibition, set shifting, and impulse control were diminished with increasing digital game addiction. There is no significant relationship between digital game addiction and working memory. Consistent with the correlation analysis, structural equation model results revealed that digital game addiction significantly predicts inhibition, set shifting and impulsivity [x2 (15, N = 98) = 7.476, p > 0.5; x2/df = 1.246; RMSEA = .05; CFI = .95; GFI = .97]. As a results, it can be concluded that digital game addiction should be controlled in order to manage impulses and develop high-capacity cognitive skills in children.

REDUCTION OF ATTACHMENT TRAUMA THROUGH THE THERAPEUTIC PROCESS

REDUCTION OF ATTACHMENT TRAUMA THROUGH THE THERAPEUTIC PROCESS

Author(s): Gabriela Leuțanu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 35/2023

Psychological trauma represents an injury to the mind that occurred as an effect of a stressful event, it can be the consequence of the effect of an experience in suffering or recurring events. Jealousy is a universal trait and is an attachment trauma, generally referring to thoughts and feelings of fear, insecurity, worry about a relative lack of safety or possessions. The rehabilitation program had as its general objective the promotion of the individuality of people who manifest trauma from jealousy and the optimization of interpersonal relationships. It took place during 12 sessions, carried out in the office, the first two consisting of individual screening, the others being group therapies. Compared to the initial situation, mean jealousy scores decrease strongly following the therapeutic intervention, which may anticipate the existence of a strong effect.

Intervenţii în situaţiile de criză din cadrul şcolii şi practica bazată pe date edificatoare

Author(s): Carmen Palaghia / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 3/2023

Nowadays, it is impossible to turn on the TV or browse the Internet without being exposed to tragic events happening in the world: the war in Ukraine, the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria with almost 50,000 deaths, tsunamis, floods, hurricanes, sudden deaths, apocalyptic scenarios with nuclear weapons, and the list goes on. Young people are also among those who daily "come into contact with the raw details of such terrifying events", and school staff are daily confronted with increasingly unusual situations, where prompt interventions to solve them or smoothen them out are necessary. These events can range from minor incidents involving one or two students to major crises affecting the entire school community. Broke and Jimerson (2004) note the need to distinguish between potentially traumatic events that require crisis intervention and events that may be merely stressful and can be managed with fewer resources. The term "crisis situation" refers to a potentially traumatic event, which by its nature exceeds the adaptation capacity of some individuals or groups of people. Events are "extremely negative, uncontrollable, depersonalized and/or unpredictable" (Broke, 2002). Evidence-based practice facilitates decision-making processes, in an approach in which the beneficiary becomes the expert who, following successive empowerment processes, becomes "the central element in self-care management, being considered to have the best expertise on his own condition" (Sandu, 2021).

Notes on modal semiotics

Author(s): Herman Tamminen / Language(s): English Issue: 24/2023

Tamminen’s prefatory article discusses modal semiotics. Its aim is to describe thinking and behaviour in/of different cultures and their modalities three-dimensionally from an impartial third-person metalevel standpoint. By adopting the structural approach in accordance with Algirdas Greimas’ theory of modalities, the becoming of a base value from its paradigmatic-virtual mode of existence to its consequent syntagmatic-actual existence viz. the axiologization and consequent ideologization of value will be described in the first part of the text. The second part provides a thorough overview of modal methodology as developed by David B. Zilberman, so as to propose their mutual methodological complementarity, and to suggest future pathways as to their reconciliation and further development. The description of modal structures, values, and categories can be used as a “shortcut” in attaining to understand differences in types of thinking and behaviour per (cultural) tradition as a metaphysical frame of reference for (a) the norms, values, and ideas objectified in culture; (b) the temperament, character, and interest observable in phenomenal behaviour; and (c) the significance, signification, and meaning subjectified in consciousness. Academically, Tamminen is devising the construct for modal semiotics, a project of which the paper at hand is also a part of; other texts concerning the same topic include “Body ground ‘red’ – integrating Peirce, Kristeva, and Greimas” and the upcoming “Blood gilded time – reflections on the sublogical bearings between passion, possession, and perish”. His many interests include, but are not restricted to, consciousness, dreaming, the symbol, thinking, culture, the analogous structure and function of the individual and collective intellects, modal semiotics, and the inevitable.

Opposing associations of Internet Use Disorder symptom domains with structural and functional organization of the striatum: A dimensional neuroimaging approach

Opposing associations of Internet Use Disorder symptom domains with structural and functional organization of the striatum: A dimensional neuroimaging approach

Author(s): Fangwen Yu,Jialin Li,Lei Xu,Xiaoxiao Zheng,Meina Fu,Keshuang Li,Shuxia Yao,Keith M. Kendrick,Christian Montag,Benjamin Becker / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

Background: Accumulating evidence suggests brain structural and functional alterations in Internet Use Disorder (IUD). However, conclusions are strongly limited due to the retrospective case-control design of the studies, small samples, and the focus on general rather than symptom-specific approaches. Methods: We here employed a dimensional multi-methodical MRI-neuroimaging design in a final sample of n 5 203 subjects to examine associations between levels of IUD and its symptom-dimensions (loss of control/time management, craving/social problems) with brain structure, resting state and taskbased (pain empathy, affective go/no-go) brain function. Results: Although the present sample covered the entire range of IUD, including normal, problematic as well as pathological levels, general IUD symptom load was not associated with brain structural or functional alterations. However, the symptom-dimensions exhibited opposing associations with the intrinsic and structural organization of the brain, such that loss of control/time management exhibited negative associations with intrinsic striatal networks and hippocampal volume, while craving/social problems exhibited a positive association with intrinsic striatal networks and caudate volume. Conclusions: Our findings provided the first evidence for IUD symptom-domain specific associations with progressive alterations in the intrinsic structural and functional organization of the brain, particularly of striatal systems involved in reward, habitual and cognitive control processes.
