Institutional Communication and Organizational Culture In Romanian Public Administration. A Case Study.

The present study aims to emphasize the extent to which modern management principles are known and applied in the Romanian public institutions. We also aim to identify a system of values that set a pattern of the organizational culture in the system of public institutions. The investigation technique we used is the questionnaire and the method we chose is the sociological survey. According to the standards of research methodology and in order to obtain accurate results, we have pre-tested the research tools in conditions similar to those of the study itself In this respect, the present study will test the validity of the questionnaire on a group of 41 subjects, master’s students in a specialized program at the University of Bucharest, with the purpose of undertaking the sociological survey. The pilot study conclusions will allow the methodological framework of the sociological survey to refine and adapt the models of international analysis to the actual Romanian context.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: This article aims at identifying the role of cultural intelligence in managing international project teams, in particular it focuses on virtual teams. The problem of cultural intelligence and its place in international business is relatively better developed in English‑language sources than in Polish ones. It was the reason to undertake this research. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The article is a review of different sources to present the place and the role of cultural intelligence in the context of various forms of team work, including virtual teams, in international environments. Usually cultural intelligence is examined in terms of intercultural management or managerial competencies. It was one of the reasons of choosing the topic related to international, virtual teams. Methodology applied in the article was based on analyses of the relevant literature, and other sources like publications of research institutions, consulting companies reports and participating observation as a member of international projects and a teacher of foreign students in Poland and in other countries. Descriptive method was utilized to present the results of the research. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The line of reasoning consists of three essential chapters. In the first, changes and trends in the work organisation and utilization of global talents were presented. The second chapter was dedicated to analysis of the concept of cultural intelligence and its components in the context of international team work. In the third chapter, types of inter‑national teams were described with particular emphasis on virtual teams and their communication problems resulting from the insufficient level of members’and leaders’ cultural intelligence. The argumentation was based on the relevant literature, results of empirical research conducted and published by various organizations and own international experience. RESEARCH RESULTS: Cultural intelligence, as a relatively new construct,is not sufficiently highlighted in the Polish literature related to human resource management, therefore the article was based on English‑language sources. The results of conducted research show the growing importance of international project teams, who increasingly work as virtual teams, where proper communication plays a key role. One of the most important barriers in their effective action is cultural misunderstanding. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:Management of companies operating in the global market should pay more attention to, recruitment and selection and intercultural training of managers involved in international activity. In particular, it relates to international projects performed by teams consisting of the representatives of different cultures who perform and communicate, in the main, virtually. It is recommended to include CQ tests into the selection procedures to examine the level of cultural intelligence of candidates. It would have also helped to design intercultural training and development tailored to the needs of employees. International teams, in particular virtual one should start their cooperation from initial face‑to‑face meetings of all members. They can be joined with intercultural training and integration activities that can result in establishing interpersonal relationships before the team starts working.

Narratives in STEM Education

Looking from the perspective of the requirements of the modern world, STEM education is a significant challenge related to teaching both people whose professional paths will be associated with STEM and those who will use knowledge in this area “unprofessionally” – only to solve everyday problems. Teachers and educators face a difficult challenge related to arousing the interest of learners in the subject of STEM, developing understanding of scientific concepts and processes, and strengthening the involvement in scientific activity. Narratives are becoming an important tool available to educators in the implementation of this task. They can arouse the students’ interest through an attractive form of presentation of, e.g. the figures of outstanding scientists or brilliant discoveries. Such forms of presentation can introduce both basic and advanced scientific knowledge, and, at the same time, save cognitive resources, strengthening the children’s involvement by making them actively participate in discovering not only the scientific laws, but also the meaning (including the personal one) of science. It is also important that narratives can become a useful tool for building the positive image of science as a world accessible to everyone, regardless of gender, age or origins. The purpose of this article is to indicate only a few areas of possible applications of narratives in STEM education, and to encourage the use of various narrative materials in education in this area at various stages of education.

Causation and dispositions: Towards a semantic characterization of the French causative verb laisser

The French causative verb laisser can enter two different constructions: a monoclausal one resembling the faire-infinitive construction (Kayne 1975, Alsina 1992, Guasti 1996, Folli & Harley 2007) and a biclausal one. While differences in interpretation between these two constructions have been pointed out (Kayne 1975, Enghels & Roegiest 2012), the link between structure and conceptual representation has not been clearly defined yet. In this paper, we tackle the syntax and semantics of causative laisser adopting as a background Talmy’s (1988) force dynamics model of causation. We further show that the link to the selectional restrictions of the causative verb can be made by considering forces as dispositional causal properties (Fara 2001), that is, properties that become relevant with respect to the role of an entity in a causal chain.

The paper puts forward a brief and selective overview of some theoretical paradigms delineated for the study of emotions, which take into account the prototypic dimensions of affectivity: (a) the cultural-anthropologic aspect; (b) the social/societal aspect; (c) the historical aspect; (d) the linguistic (lexical-semantic) aspect. We shall demarcate and describe some key-concepts of the anthropological and cultural-historical research on emotions: cognitive model for emotions; emotionology; emotional communities; historical semantics of emotions. Underlying the relevance of an interdisciplinary approach in the study of emotions and, particularly, the need for an historical/diachronic perspective, the aim of this paper is the delimitation of some methodological tools that can be used: (a) broadly, in the analysis of various forms of manifestation of affectivity in language, and (b) especially, in the lexical-semantic analysis of the affective lexicon.

APPLICATION OF DEEP LEARNING

In the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the number of papers related to machine learning and the application of machine learning in various fields of science. Belmonte et al. observed that between 2010 and 2018, the growth in the number of papers related to machine learning topics and big data was exponential. They analysed 4240 scientific publications from the Web of Science citation database [1]. Xu et al., in the analysis of publications in the International Journal of Machine Learning and Cybernetics, noted that from 2010 to 2017, the number of publications, the cooperation rate, the total number of authors, and the degree of cooperation had shown an increasing trend [2]. Dokic et al. analysed the publication of papers in which deep learning is applied in the field of agriculture and noticed that the first papers were published in 2014, and in the second half of the second decade of the 21st century, exponential growth in the number of published papers was observed [3].The objectives of this paper are primarily to analyze the literature related to the application of deep learning in apple growing, to propose the division of these papers depending on the area, and to analyze the observed trends in publishing papers related to this topic. In the analysis, only papers published in scientific journals were considered, and the condition is that they be found in the citation databases of the Web of Science or Scopus. The second section gives a brief overview of deep learning and its development and a presentation of the importance of apple growing in agriculture. The third section is an overview of papers that use deep learning methods and solve some problems in growing apples. The third section is divided into four parts, depending on the area the paper deals with. The fourth section is a discussion and conclusion.

Resilience levels of learners participating in the SPARK Resilience (ISKRA Odporności) pilot prevention programme

This article draws attention and describes the importance of resilience as a protective factor in both mental and social maturing processes. The topic was inspired by the SPARK Resilience (ISKRA Odporności) pilot prevention programme, whose aim is to support emotional immunity defined as the ability to control reactions to events and to cope with stress. This article presents the programme’s assumptions and the conclusions from the first part of the research that serve to evaluate it. A group of 433 students from 13 schools in Poland from the 5th to 8th grades of primary school and the 1st grade of secondary school were surveyed in the selected procedure. The surveys conducted via the Internet used, among others, the SPP-18 scale developed by N. Ogińska-Bulik and Z. Juczyński. The research demonstrated the respondents’ level of resilience, which turned out to be significantly lower in the surveyed girls than in the boys.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The scientific aim of this article is to present literature regarding physical components of trauma and possibility of treatment using Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT). THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The main research problem is the issue of DMT intervention and the use of DMT in treating physical components of trauma. The method is the analysis of chosen literature. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: DMT’s effectivity is analysed on the based of research conducted in groups of sexual abuse victims and children refugees. In these groups DMT appeared to have positive results for participants. Then, the advantages and limitations of this method are discussed. RESEARCH RESULTS: Trauma causes dysregulation in the whole body. Dance based therapy in treating physical components of excessive stress is an interesting area of research. DMT can be an effective addition to trauma intervention. DMT is a method already used in therapeutic practice. Conducted research showed that DMT has positive results. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Body based treatment in context of trauma should be still explored. Creating DMT manual and scientific measurement tools could help to confirm its effectivity. It can be an interesting alternative in Poland for treating Russian invasion victims.

Mentalisation is a multifaceted cognitive activity, which enables individuals to interpret the behaviours of others (and their own) in terms of intentional mental states. A person, who engages in mentalisation, is aware that human behaviour stems from one's mental state. The ability to mentalise begins to develop in childhood, primarily through safe relationships with caregivers, but it can be cultivated throughout life thanks to, among others, functioning in a mentalising environment, such as a school. This article aims to address the question of whether developing the ability to mentalise can support the functioning of students, parents, and teachers in the school environment. Findings from previous research and interventions conducted in various parts of the world not only provide an affirmative answer to this question, but also identify the characteristics of a mentalising school which caters to the need for future-oriented education.

Introduction. The article is devoted to the problem of developing Education undergraduates’ system thinking skills through cognitive mapping. The purpose of the article is to identify the specifics of the development of system thinking skills in Education undergraduates by means of cognitive mapping strategy. Materials and Methods. The study follows competence-based, systemic and activity-based approaches to teaching Education students. The authors used a set of theoretical (analysis, synthesis, reviewing scholarly publications) and empirical methods. The empirical research was conducted as a formative teaching experiment (action research). The empirical data were analyzed and summarized. The sample consisted of 186 Education students (State University of Education, Tambov State University named after G. R. Derzhavin). In order to verify the research findings, the authors developed and used a system thinking skills scale and A. V. Panova and M. A. Fedorova’s system thinking assessment inventory. In order to assess system thinking skills, the authors selected a set of criteria based on the analysis of R. A. Excelsa, G. K. Semiz and G. Teksoz’s studies. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used to determine the reliability of the reported statistics and the accuracy of the results. Results. Based on the analysis of theoretical studies and successful educational practices, the authors clarified the concept of developing the skills of systemic thinking in Education students, identified the specifics of this process on the basis of a formative e xperiment on the implementation of cognitive mapping strategy (setting the goal; choosing a topic for mapping; collecting information; preparing materials; definition of key terms; creation of the first level of the cognitive map; adding additional levels; analysis and evaluation; preparation for use; editing and updating). Summarizing theoretical and empirical data, the authors developed and justified diagnostic tools for measuring students’ system thinking skills (role levels include pre -aware; developing; developer and master), and identified the level of system thinking skills in future teachers. The study has proved the effectiveness of the purposeful development of system thinking skills in Education students by means of cognitive mapping strategy. Conclusions. The article concludes about the effectiveness of developing systemic thinking skills in Education students through cognitive mapping strategy. Research findings on the level students’ system thinking skills are summarized.

Introduction. The relevance of studying professional thinking in the context of higher medical education is determined by theoretical and practical significance of the problem, which has an epistemological, not ontological nature: the formation of doctor’s professional clinical thinking. The article presents the findings of an empirical study of psychological patterns underlying the correlation between styles and types of thinking among medical students, attending physicians, and doctors in academic and professional activities. The purpose of the article is to identify the dynamics of relationships between styles and types of thinking among doctors at different stages of their professional development. Materials and Methods. Stylistic and typological features of doctors’ thinking were established by analyzing acmeological and psychological mechanisms of professionals’ creative thinking in the context of a metacognitive approach. Based on the resource approach to understanding the phenomenon of professional thinking, clinical thinking is considered as the highest cognitive process of searching, detecting and resolving problems, identifying externally unspecified, implicit properties of the cognizable and transformed medical situation. The following methods were used: A.K. Belousova’s ‘Styles of thinking inventory’ and V.A. Ganzen, K.B. Malyshev, L.V. Oginets’s ‘Method of identifying the type of thinking and the level of creativity’. Results. The authors have revealed the interrelation between styles and types of thinking of medical students, attending physicians and doctors. It was established that the dominant type and style of medical students, attending physicians and doctors’ thinking are the imaginative type of thinking and the practical style of thinking. The authors clarified and described the dynamics of interrelations between thinking styles and types in medical students, attending physicians and doctors. It varies depending on the stage of doctor’s professionalization. The psychological peculiarities of typical and stylistic characteristics of doctor's thinking were revealed. The authors summarized the connection of doctors' creative abilities with leading styles and types of thinking and described the resources of professionalization of clinical thinking. Conclusions. The article presents the understanding of doctor’s professional thinking as a type of thinking, whose laws are based on general laws of thinking, but follow the specifics of medical activities. It is shown that the connections between the styles and types of doctor’s thinking acquire quantitative and qualitative peculiarities at the certain stages of doctor’s professional development.

Speculative Fiction and Pattern Recognition: Narrative Models for a Retrained Intuition

The notion of pattern recognition emerged in the late 1950s as an extension of advances in cybernetics and information theory. From the start, authors of science fiction and speculative fiction narratives made their own explorations of the concept, taking it to fields and extremes not predicted by the state of development of pattern recognition technologies. I argue that a pair of these narratives provide opportunities to observe the development of a public understanding of, and imaginaries deriving from, a vision of perception geared toward patterns, arrangements, and configurations that involve historical change. More specifically, these narratives stage questions of historical meaning and intuitive grasp of patterns of consumer behavior by modifying the notion they borrow from computational research through the intermediary of media theory. A second goal of the article is to examine literary history by taking the relevant works of Brunner and Gibson as favorable cases for observing the beginnings and transformations of the reception of pattern recognition concept by speculative fiction. The common reference they make to historical concretion serves as a constant across their differences here. Both fictions seem to stage the possibilities of pattern literacy as a human capacity that includes but is not reducible to one of its most famous and problematic avatars, which is that of a sense of conspiracy, belief gone awry, and/or paranoia (which, according to Fredric Jameson, is the “poor person’s cognitive mapping’’). Methodologically relying on a combination of media theory and close readings, the goal here is to ascertain whether such fictions constitute viable cases for a “pattern recognition from below”, as distinct from a data-intensive pursuit. In this sense, this study neither constitutes an intellectual history of pattern recognition that reduces the object of its study to mere accouterments of context nor simply a close reading of each of the texts on their own terms. It is a comparative exercise that aims to gain surplus of historical and textual intelligibility through the juxtaposition of its chronologically distant narratives. From different angles, the two close readings treat the same core problem of the possibility to retain an affirmative approach to the historical-morphological possibilities inherent in pattern recognition and not consign it to an “ideology” of the information society.

This study evaluates the characteristics of Kazakh fairy tales as a cultural phenomenon from a scientific perspective. Fairy tales are important in determining the worldview of the Kazakh people and recognizing their conceptual orientation. The Kazakh worldview as a linguistic picture of the world in Kazakh fairy tales has been studied according to the theory of reflection. In the 21st century, the global importance of quality education and training has increased significantly. Future generations’ ability to find their place in society depends on their level of education, competence and cognition. In the article, in accordance with the principles of reflection, the role of fairy tales in instilling positive qualities in a child - from an early age - is analyzed. Another important concept is the “self” of the individual. The ways in which fairy tales provide knowledge, creativity, application of established skills, social reflection, the ability of an intellectual individual to think about the meaning of life and existentialism are reviewed with specific examples. In this study, the image of Kazakh fairy tales as a cognitive and cultural phenomenon was tried to be determined cognitively. At the basis of the study of the linguistic image of the world are philosophical problems that examine the general problems of the image of the world. In world science, this concept was put forward by M. Heidegger. It is the meaning of the word “image (picture, video)” regarding the image of something that first comes to our mind. But the meaning of the concept of “world image” is deep and comprehensive. Where the world becomes a picture, general entities are seen as things that man aims at and therefore wants to present to himself, things that he opposes and literally wants to present to himself.

Visual disability (blindness or amblyopia) causes serious deviations in mental development. Visual disability disrupts the balance of the body and the environment, which creates a number of significant features in the development and manifestations of psychic processes. The defect of mental development itself in the visual disability includes a primary defect - an underdevelopment of the visual analyzer and secondary defects - disorders of perception, thinking, speech, memory, attention, special personality characteristics, changes in the behavioral-affective sphere, the reduced degree of maturation affective and social adaptation, especially at young ages, at the beginning of schooling. Thus, visual pathology inevitably leads to certain negative changes in the mental development of the visually impaired. In order for the correctional impact to be effective, and for growth and education in the family and in educational institutions to be favorable, teachers, psychologists and parents must know specifics in the psychological profile of visual impairments.

REFINING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE INFLUENCE OF CULTURE ON HUMAN DEVELOPMENT: A SITUATED COGNITION APPROACH

In the present paper, we discuss the theoretical and methodological benefits of refining the current models which are focused on the influence of culture on human development based on theoretical models and empirical findings which stem from the situated cognition approach on culture. Firstly, to illustrate the current approach on culture and human development, we review the Ecocultural Model of Development, which focuses on the manner in which caregivers’ cultural models are associated with their parental beliefs (i.e., socialization goals and parental ethnotheories), their parental practices and ultimately with the child’s development. Secondly, we explore two models based on a situated cognition approach: the Cultural Task analysis model and the Culture as Situated Cognition approach. Based on the assumptions of these models and findings from our own lab, we discuss how we can theoretically refine current models which focus on the influence of culture on human development, and what methodological approaches these refinements can lead us to. In the paper we also outline several avenues for future research that stem from the reconceptualization of the influence of culture on human development, from a situated cognition perspective.

Maladaptive behavior represents that type of behavior which prevents an individual from functionally adjusting to or coping with potentially stressing situations. Human behavior bears the imprint of personality traits that have been modeled by neuropsychological structures influenced by the early childhood times when the personality starts developing. It is the incongruence between the individual’s response to the expectations of their environment and these expectations that turns their behavior into a maladaptive one. In literature, risk factors have been operationalized in order to find what exactly leads to this kind of behavior, as well as the manner in which they interact with individual’s internal psychological structure that results in maladaptive behavior. Preventive methods have been developed in this respect and they include interventions at different levels of life, both at family, social, biological level, and psychological and educational one.

To be is to interpret, and to interpret is to live, for life ceases when the biosemiotic capacities of self-control and choice-making stop. With such an ontological premise, Miyamoto’s paper makes the case that sign processes are not disembodied, decontextualized, and isolated, but always contingent to the relational selfhood of living beings. Terminology-wise, he revises the Sebeokian concept of “semiotic self ” (SS) through the interdisciplinary lenses of Semiotic Self Theory (SST). Resuming the anti-Cartesian spirit of C. S. Peirce’s “Questions Concerning Certain Faculties Claimed for Man”, he observes that semiotic selves could be conceptualized at large as beings that are (1) value-making; (2) multi-layered; (3) communicative; (4) distributed; (5) agential; (6) anticipatory; (7) open-ended; and (8) auto -poietic. Miyamoto’s main contribution to the anthology is to sketch a non-anthropocentric definition of SS based on current advancements in Peircean phenomenology, biosemiotics, and zoosemiotics. He defines a SS as an embodied semiosis that feels, chooses, and acts by means of transient functional cycles, which are teleodynamically- and habitually-grounded on an ecosemiosphere. Such terms, he argues, should be coextensive with the definition of a lifeform. He concludes that SST should shift its focus from the psychological standpoint of a singular self (e.g., identity) to the plural phenomenology of all lifeforms (e.g., semiosis).

The human psyche can be studied indirectly by the interrogation of individuals and by the examination of behaviour and the brain. It can also be observed directly through introspection. Buddhist tradition is dedicated to the latter: Systematic first-person study of the mind. Tragel’s chapter is dedicated to exploring how meaning is unmade, and Buddhism offers thorough insight into altering one’s meaning-making processes in the direction of cessation rather than the unlimited continuance of semiosis. The specific metasemiosic awareness of the demolishing functions of signs presents semiotic selves with constructive doubt, and, consequently, a flexibility of meaning-making as it proceeds. Her paper looks into the transformation towards this flexibility, making use of epistemic access to the first-person perspective in meditation. Via discussion of “mindful meaning-breaking”, she aims to introduce a semiotic framework for analysing Chan meditation/mindfulness and to emphasize the theoretical relevance of “exemption from meaning”. Contemplation is intrinsically ethical and semiotics intrinsically contemplative. Based on this understanding, Tragel is generally wandering around the lines of what she calls contemplative semiotics. Her interests involve topics such as semioethics, introspective practices, transformation of cognitive processes, the cultural psychology of meditation, and the semiotic approach to Buddhism in theories of the Tartu-Moscow School member, orientalist Linnart Mäll.
