An end-of-life frontier. Palliative care, ‘good accompaniment’ and doctor-patient relationship in light of a dialogical (and restorative) perspective

Author(s): Federico Reggio / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The essay proposes a philosophical-legal reflection dedicated to the end of life, with particular reference to the theme of palliative care and the so-called ‘accompaniment to death’, inscribed within the doctor-patient relationship, and its further possible articulations. This profile of investigation is read, in particular, through the gaze of the perspectives and methodologies of the search for consensual solutions and their singularity as instruments aimed at fostering an authentic dialogue between the parties. The considerations that follow have matured, in this regard, in the context of a discussion with medical personnel working in the oncological field and with oncological patients. Their underlying ethical perspective assumes a dialogical character, informed also by restorative ethics.

W zwierciadle wygnania, czyli Ja z jednej i Ja z drugiej strony naprawdę strasznej wody

Author(s): Adam Lipszyc / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2024

This article deals with derangement of identity caused by the experience of migration. First, the author proposes a number of psychoanalytical conceptions (the uncanny, the mirror self-reflection, the doppelgänger) that could constitute a point of departure for a suitable argument. Next, he focuses on an analysis of four films (“House of Sand and Fog”, “Incendies”, “His House”, “The Babysitter”), which depict the migration experience from various angles. In doing so, he extracts recurring motifs of mirror reflections and the aquatic element, which turn out to be a key to the image of identity split by dislocation and capable of communication with itself and the surrounding only under the condition of recognising the fundamental aporias of its conditio. The author devotes particularly vast attention to the manner in which this derangement is manifested in parent-child relations.

Author(s): Georgiana Lăzărescu,Adina Karner-Huțuleac,Alexandra Maftei / Language(s): English Issue: 20/2023

Previous studies concerning LGBTQ individuals’ experiences found significant challenges, including discrimination, prejudice, and violence. Given these experiences, researchers are preoccupied with the examination of the potential adverse effects on the physical and mental health of LGBTQ individuals and the effective strategies to reduce these negative outcomes. In this short narrative review, we discuss some of the specific interventions aimed to improve the mental health of LGBTQ individuals, especially among the youth. More specifically, we discuss the theoretical framework and empirical evidence related to LGBTQ – Affirmative Cognitive–Behavioral Therapy, Creative Writing, and Expressive Wiring Therapy, Attachment-based Family Therapy, and LGBTQ Relationally–based Positive Psychology.

Perfectionism and psychological wellbeing: considerations on gender and psychotherapy attendance differences on the levels of perfectionism and psychological wellbeing in Albania

Perfectionism and psychological wellbeing: considerations on gender and psychotherapy attendance differences on the levels of perfectionism and psychological wellbeing in Albania

Author(s): Bora Skreli,Blerta Bodinaku / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between perfectionism and psychological wellbeing. For this reason, 548 people completed the questionaire through social media and pen and paper. The simple and multiple regression model, the Pearson correlation, and the independent samples test were used to test the hypotheses. Correlational analysis showed a strong negative relationship between global perfectionism and psychological wellbeing. Linear regression showed a fair predictive capacity of perfectionism on the levels of psychological wellbeing with concern over mistakes and doubts about actions with greater predictive force, constituting thus a better model for explaining psychological wellbeing. The multiple linear regression model showed that age also played a role in psychological wellbeing. People who were older have higher levels of subjective wellbeing. Independent t-test analysis showed that there were no significant differences in gender regarding perfectionism and psychological wellbeing, whereas people who went to therapy or counselling showed significantly higher levels of perfectionism. The study findings are coherent with theoretical and empirical data that higher levels of perfectionism are associated with lower levels of emotional wellbeing.

Author(s): Iuliana Costea,Maria Dragalina / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The targeted objective is to identify whether there are any differences between the ownership of a pet (dog owners versus cat owners), regarding loneliness, pet attachment and perceiving positive or negative affect. The current study included a sample of 88 pet owners. Their ages ranged from 18 to 63 years. The participants came from various regions of the country, with 51.1% coming from rural areas and 48.9% from urban areas. Regarding the type of pet, 55.7% stated they owned a dog, 38.6% owned a cat, and 5.7% reported owning other animals. Participants responded to a questionnaire consisting of items measuring attachment to pets, perceived loneliness, and affects. Results: A statistically significant negative correlation was established between positive affect and anxiety, indicating that anxiety decreases as the individual experiences emotional well-being. No other differences or connections were found between our variables. These aspects can be integrated into the planning and delivery of social services to enhance the quality of life and well-being of clients. Confirmed also by other studies, pet ownership helps by Pets, such as dogs and cats, provide companionship and can alleviate feelings of loneliness. The bond between a pet and its owner can be a source of emotional support. This can be particularly comforting during times of stress or emotional distress and can be a helpful asset from the social work perspective.

Оценка социальных и личностных проявлений подростков, увлеченных молодежной субкультурой

Оценка социальных и личностных проявлений подростков, увлеченных молодежной субкультурой

Author(s): Valentina I. Spirina,Yulia A. Belous,Maria L. Spirina,Olga Belous / Language(s): Russian Issue: 4/2024

Introduction. The problem of the study is related to the idea of peculiarities of socialization as the formation of adolescents’ personality. The solution to this problem is necessary to prevent the negative impact of the subculture on the personality of the adolescent in the learning environment. According to the age specificity, an adolescent pays special attention to the reaction of their peers. Having identified themselves as members of social groups, adolescents put this identification into the scheme of self-awareness and begin to ‘bring’ themselves into ‘conformity with the group’. Deep and long involvement in the informal movement determines the interiorization of the group’s value system and changes in the adolescent’s worldview. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to identify social and personal manifestations of adolescents who are interested in youth subculture. Materials and Methods. The study follows personality-oriented and cognitive approaches. In order to achieve the goal of the study, the authors used theoretical (analysis, generalization, systematization) and empirical (testing, conversations, questionnaires, expert assessments) methods. The sample included 85 Year 10 students of secondary educational institutions in the Krasnodar Territory (Russia). Results. The article presents a theoretical analysis of approaches to the problem of studying social and personal characteristics of adolescents included in youth subcultures. The data obtained indicate personality traits and social status that determine the enthusiasm for certain subcultures. In particular, adolescents interested in youth subcultures demonstrated the following problems: dissatisfaction with social status, communication problems, adequacy/inadequacy of self-esteem, search for thrills, influence of friends, and insufficient knowledge about the content and features of the influence of youth subculture. Conclusions. Based on the theoretical analysis of scholarly literature on the problem of the research, it was found that the adolescent’s inclusion in an informal association is determined by social and personal characteristics. Adolescents who are interested in youth subcultures demonstrated the following common characteristics: the need for a higher status in the students’ group, peer approval, unstable self-esteem, etc. Understanding the characteristics of adolescents contributes to fostering an adequate personality formation and determines the content of the prevention measures aimed at eliminating negative influences of informal associations.

Author(s): Mariya Aleksandrovna Raikina,Anna V. Vorontsova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 6/2024

Introduction. The article is devoted to the analysis of the current state of psychological and educational support for building students’ life strategies within the system of moral education in universities of the Russian Federation. The purpose of the study is to identify the specifics of psychological and educational support for the process of building life strategies by students based on the analysis of the best practices in the implementation of youth policy in modern conditions. Materials and Methods. The theoretical and methodological bases of the study ware the ideas and concepts of learner-centered approach. The authors used the methods of expert assessment and content analysis. An array of empirical data was obtained as a result of the analysis of applications submitted by higher educational institutions for the Review-competition of the best practices in the implementation of youth policy and the organization of educational activities at the university. The data array consisted of 1215 applications. Results. The authors conclude that there is a contradiction between the relevance of the task of building a life strategy for student age and a pronounced lack of activities in psychological and educational support of this process. The authors emphasized the internal orientation and isolation of moral educational activities at universities, which hinders the spread of practices of supporting the construction of students' life prospects outside the university. Among the existing formats of psychological and educational support, the centers of psychological counseling, adaptation and training programs, monitoring and diagnostic programs, clubs and communities of pre-psychological assistance and mutual assistance prevail. However, educational activities and youth policy at universities have a pronounced indirect or mediated influence on the construction of students’ life strategy. The most significant potential of this activity in relation to long-term planning is an increase in the level of awareness and social orientation of the individual, his or her ability to self-knowledge and consciously build a life prospect. Conclusions. The authors identify specific characteristics of psychological and educational support for the construction of life prospects by students at the university: a pronounced lack of attention to the task of building a long-term life prospect; the dominance of practices of supporting orientation and planning in the near future; institutionalization of support for building a life strategy in psychologically-oriented formats; significant indirect influence of the university on the process of building a life perspective; deficiencies of formats that affect significant components of building a life perspective (family and career planning); deficiencies of formats that form social immunity to negative environmental influences, thereby removing barriers to building a life perspective.

Author(s): Olga Stanislavovna Shcherbinina,Irina Nikolaevna Grushetskaya / Language(s): Russian Issue: 6/2024

Introduction. The article presents the survey results, revealing the peculiarities of forming selfattitude to the inner and outer “I” by talented young people. The purpose of the article is to define the nature of talented young people’s self-attitude to the inner and outer “I” and its influence on selffulfillment. Materials and Methods. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study is the reflexivecompensatory approach. The method involves young people evaluating themselves, identifying their problems and building a program of remedial work with a teacher, which is aimed at creating conditions for successful socialization and self-development. The main methods are reviewing scholarly literature on the research problem, interviewing and testing Education students (n= 239). Results. The authors have revealed the specific features in forming self-attitude to the inner and outer "I" in talented youth. Most of the participants demonstrate excessive demands on themselves; focus on others and on the opinions of other people. At the same time, talented young people demonstrate a high level of “self-leadership” (60 %), “self-acceptance” (60 %), “self-blame” (56 %), “fairly high level of self-evaluating” (45 %), which indicates a positive perception of themselves. They have an average level of conflict. The participants are aware of their personal importance, their success and achievements, and their willingness to improve themselves is noted. They demonstrate a high level of perfectionism and are critical of their own failures. Conclusions. The study concludes that talented young people generally perceive themselves and their opportunities positively, strive for life and personal success. They are not quarrelsome. But they are not eager to be leaders with high potentials. A high level of perfectionism and criticism is accompanied by a feeling of anxiety and prevents skills of self-presentation to appear.

Author(s): Hana Mujkanović,Dario Vučenović / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 7/2023

Among the most serious consequences of drug abuse for any society, in addition to economic damage, are also health problems and criminal behavior related to illegal drugs. Accordingly, the general goal of the research was to examine the occurrence of drug abuse (determine the reason for starting drug experimentation, the average age of first taking drugs and the average age of taking the primary drug of addiction, who was the first to find out and expose the drug problem and what type of drug addicts consume ), risky behavior (to determine when criminal activity occurred and the level of risky health behaviors) and some aspects of the treatment of addicts (to determine whether there are differences in the outcome of addiction treatment depending on the type of primary drug of addiction, who referred the addict to treatment, whether he is receiving pharmacotherapy and which dominant treatment facility). The research was conducted on the collected data of 6,858 persons treated for drug abuse in the Republic of Croatia, average age M=38.02 years (SD=10.17). For the purposes of this research, the Pompidou questionnaire was used with basic data on addicts in the treatment program. Of the total number of respondents, 82.7% were men. The results show that the most common reason for experimenting with drugs is the influence of peers or partners (39.6%). The average age of first taking any addictive substance was M=16.22 years (SD=4.09). For the largest number of addicts, the first drug of addiction was cannabinoids (80.3%), while in the largest percentage (70%) heroin was the primary drug of addiction. It was found that 34.6% of addicts broke the law for the first time after they started taking harder addictive substances, and 26% after they started taking lighter addictive substances. Furthermore, 63.9% of addicts took drugs intravenously at one point, whereby the average age of the first intravenous intake was M=21.15 years (SD=4.86). 53.1% of addicts used common utensils for consuming addictive substances. Slightly more than half of addicts (55.5%) personally applied for some form of addiction treatment, and the dominant treatment institution is the service for prevention and outpatient addiction treatment (77.8%). In the end, the outcome of treatment for opiate addiction is somewhat more favorable than for treatment of non-opiate addiction. The obtained results on a practical level could be used to shape guidelines for public policies related to disciplinary measures and criminal procedures. They emphasize the need to involve educational institutions in the primary prevention of drug addiction.

Zdravstvena ponašanja na radnom mjestu: apsentizam, prezentizam i profesionalno izgaranje

Author(s): Katarina Jelić,Jelena Maričić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 7/2023

This paper provides an overview of the theories and models that explain the interdependence of individual and environmental factors in predicting burnout and negative organisational behaviour. Contemporary researchers predominantly emphasise the role of factors at the organisational level, group processes within the work collective and the broader social context (in sociological terms, mentality). We emphasise personal (socio-demographic, dispositional and socio-cognitive) factors, primarily focusing on the ones we are able to control. The introductory part describes the burnout syndrome and the two dominant forms of negative organisational behaviours - absenteeism and presenteeism. After that, an overview of the most commonly used models for interpreting health risk behaviour is provided. The third part focuses on an overview of risk and protective factors that have been consistently confirmed to be able to successfully predict the variance of the phenomena above, as well as a summary of research conclusions on risky health behaviours in the context of professional burnout and negative organisational behaviour. The final considerations bring suggestions of possible interventions and prevention strategies aimed at protecting mental health and well-being.

Provjera metrijskih karakteristika Skale motivacije za roditeljstvo

Author(s): Anela Hasanagić,Almira Isić-Imamović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 6/2020

Parenting motivation has been studied recently quite intensively, especially in the context of other factors that determine parental motivation, but also as a predictor of other criteria variables. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are number of studies in which Parenting Motivation scale Lacković-Grgin and Vitez (1997) by was used, but this scale was not tested primarily in the context of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on BiH sample, so the aim of this study is to examine the psychometric characteristics of the above mentioned instrument developed ba Lacković-Grgin and Vitez (1997) on the sample of BiH population. An available sample (N=124) consisted out of parents whose children attend one of the preschool institutions in which research took place. The results of the item analysis show the discriminant validity of each item is above the criteria of 0.3, which implies that item reliability is satisfying. The reliability of the whole instrument is α=0.956, and according to particular sub scales it is as follows: altruistic motivation α= 0.869, fatalistic α=0.868, narcissistic α=0.769, instrumental self affirmation α=0.860, instrumental extension of the family α=0.857, instrumental preservation of marriage stability α= 0.892, and instrumental patriotic motivation α= 0.870, which indicates that the instrument has extremely good reliability. The intitial solution of the exploratory factor analysis offered a solution with 12 factors and that explained total of 72.3% of variance. Such solution was not interpretable. The scree plot of this solution indicated the justification for 7 factors. And, at last, interpretable solution was obtained by confirmatory analysis with a fixed number of factors at 7 and Equamax rotation with Kaiser Normalization included, that explained 61,53% of variance. This solution almost completely confirmed the solution offered by authors of the Scale.

Perfekcionizam i depresivnost: medijacijska uloga bezuvjetnog samoprihvaćanja

Author(s): Dragana Tomić,Enedina Hasanbegović-Anić,Đenita Tuce / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 5/2019

The goal of the research is to question the mediating role of unconditional self-acceptance on the relation between the negative perfectionism and depression in students. Relying on contemporary research which sees negative perfectionism as a vulnerability factor for developing psychological difficulties, this paper is based upon the REBT theory of ego disturbance, and mediating model suggested by Flett and associates. The research was done on the appropriate sample of students from the University of Sarajevo (N=394), of average age M=21.39 (SD=1.56). Data was collected by group work method. The following psychological instruments were used: Sociodemographic characteristics questionnaire, Multidimensional perfectionism scale (socially prescribed perfectionism subscale), Unconditional self-acceptance scale, Zung self-rating depression scale, and Zung self-rating anxiety scale. The results of the mediating analysis show that negative perfectionism variable achieved a significant total (c=.08; 95% CI=.03, .12) and indirect (ab=.04; 95% CI=.02, .06) effect on depression, while the direct effect did not prove to be significant (c’=.04; 95% CI=-.01, .09). These results demonstrate that unconditional self-acceptance has the mediating role in relation between negative perfectionism and depression. Additionally, it has been confirmed that higher level of negative perfectionism contributes to lower unconditional self-acceptance, which then negatively reflects upon the level of depression. These results are in accordance with previous theoretical analyses and may serve as guidelines in creating efficient preventive and treatment interventions in working with students.

Werther vs. Papageno efekat: pregled dosadašnjih istraživanja o utjecaju medijskih izvještavanja na suicidalnost

Author(s): Zana Aziraj,Vildana Aziraj-Smajić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 5/2019

Theory about imitating mass media assumes that if modeling works in one direction (imitating suicide), than it works in another one also (positive model). „Werther effect“ is used for explaining the effect of negative media role. It has been used for a few decades. Positive effect of media role in suicides is called „Papageno effect“, and it has been discovered recently. Aim of this article Is to give review of researches about distinction between positive and negative role of media reporting on suicide. According to the researches, it has been defined that media reports about suicides are not representative, since they appeal to sensationally exaggerate suicides, which are rare in everyday life. Tendency to repeat a report about same suicide is connected with higher suicide rate among clinical and general population. It has been determined negative role of media reporting about celebrity suicides on the future suicidal behavior among population with depressive disorder. Certain social variables, especially criminal record, have been shown to be significant for higher risk of copycat suicidal behavior. Proof for the copycat effect is higher rate of same or similar suicides. Based on the researches on this subject, it has been confirmed that media has a significant role on emersion and accretion of suicidal behavior, but also on decreasing and detaining suicidal behavior. It is also important to say that there are a lot of more researches on how medias can provoke suicidal behavior, while it’s still small amount of researches potential positive effects of medias in suicidal behavior.

Građenje post-postmodernog subjekta

Građenje post-postmodernog subjekta

Author(s): Velimir Popović,Marijana Popović,Haris Bilalović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 4/2017

The image of a human being as a soulful one, i.e., as a free, procreative agency, which possesses its inner psychological side, autonomy, personal identity and self, is a product of the Modern while the followers of the Post-Modern have disputed this traditional psychological tenet of the human being and placed its self under scrutiny. Post-Modern scholars undermine, deconstruct, challenge, disavow and even reject or abandon concepts such as the subject, self, and personal identity, so precious among psychologists. They speak about the “death of man”, the “death of the author”, “the ‘death’ of the subject itself – the end of the autonomous bourgeois ego”, the “displacement of the ego”, the “deconstruction of the subject”, the “dissolution of self-identity”, and sometimes a combination of all the above. All their litanies on the death of the human subject or self were designed to dethrone the sovereignty of the Cartesian notion of man as an intentional interiorized mental essence. The traditional (i.e. Modern) descriptions and definitions of the human self – such as substance and individuation, form and matter, subject, mind, ego, personal or self-identity – have been criticized, deconstructed or denied in the Post-Modern era and, yet, still to this day psychology has not offered any reasonable answers to the accusations to which her theories and psychotherapeutic praxis were exposed. Our presentation is designed to respond to the aforementioned challenges from the originators of post-modernity. We will try to offer an analytical / Jungian response to their de/con/structive postmodern notions of subject and identity. We will not try to refute or disprove arguments by which they attack the traditional modern notion of the human subject, the self or personal identity because, and this is our principal argument, by abandoning the selfunderstood in the classical modernist substance-theory they did not abandon every sense of self. Even if everything, which remains after attacks on self, is ‘fragile’ self with ‘feeble identity’, therefore what remains is still a self. However, we assume that this leftover or residue of self and identity is what there is and yet quite enough to sketch an analytical / Jungian portrait of the post-postmodern subject and in accomplishing this task we will rely on the cherished notions of postmodernity – narrative, discourse, language, speech and narrative imagination.

Posttraumatski stresni poremećaj uzrokovan traumatskim porođajem

Author(s): Vildana Aziraj-Smajić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 3/2016

The author’s views on the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after birth are contradictory. According to some authors, there is a high probability of occurrence of PTSD after childbirth. In determined situations and under certain circumstances delivery can be highly stressful experience and terrifying event in which the mother and/or child’s integrity is compromised. For those women who, after childbirth and/or complicated pregnancy, are not able to adequately integrate these occurances into their life experience, it results in the development of PTSD. Another group of authors believes that PTSD developes only due to experiencing the adverse occurrences, while labor is traditionally regarded as a positive event and a positive life experience. The report contains a review article on research of PTSD caused by induced delivery, and the risk factors for the development of postpartal PTSD. The aim of this work is to review the former studies on this issue. Based on a review of numerous recent studies, according to available data, it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between PTSD and experience traumatic childbirth and that, as the most significant risk factor for the development of PTSD after childbirth, occurs sexual abuse in childhood.
