The study investigated the relationship between students’ perception of teachers’ communication behaviours and performance in Basic Science in Anambra State, Nigeria. Three research questions and three null hypotheses tested at 0.05 alpha level guided the conduct of the study. The study adopted the correlation survey research design. The population comprised of 26,261 upper basic nine students in the 261 state government-owned secondary schools in Anambra State. A sample of 540 upper basic nine students obtained using multi-stage sampling procedure was used. The Teachers’ Communication Behaviour Questionnaire (TCBQ) adapted by the researchers with reliability coefficients of 0.80 was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by three experts from Faculty of Education in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. Data were collected by administering the instruments to the students with the aid of four research assistants. The upper basic eight promotion results of the students in Basic Science were used as performance scores of the students. Data collected were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and t-test of correlation analysis. The findings of the study revealed that a significant low positive relationship exists between students’ perception scores of their Basic Science teachers’ communication behaviours and performance scores in Basic Science. Also, findings of the study revealed a significant low positive relationship exist between students’ perception scores of their Basic Science teachers’ communication behaviours and performance scores in Basic Science with respect to gender. It was recommended amongst others that sufficient strategies be deployed by government, school authorities and the teachers in improving the classroom communication behaviours of teachers.

Although the use of innovative instructional methods in teaching in the 21st century has been recognized to promote the acquisition of the skills needed by individuals to survive in the modern globalized society, these methods however to an extent have failed to achieve their main aim which is geared towards helping students excel in various aspects of examination, as in using these methods alone, students tend to acquire these skills but to an extent not easily recall the simple facts needed to pass most external examinations. In this light, the researcher sought out to find out if the integration of mnemonic instructions into these teaching methods will help students recall facts easily and hence perform better in examinations. To achieve the purpose of the study, two research questions and three null hypotheses tested at 0.05 alpha levels guided the study. The study adopted a quasi-experimental research design, specifically, the pretest posttest non-randomized control group design.

Oskar Loorits (1900–1961) is an Estonian folklore researcher, who is primarily known as the researcher of the folk tradition and religion of the Livonians, and as the founder and the first director of the Estonian Folklore Archives, founded in 1927. His connections with the University of Tartu have been discussed to a lesser extent. The article is based on the materials of the University of Tartu, mainly personnel records, stored in the National Archives of Estonia. Loorits was admitted to the University of Tartu in 1919, i.e., the same year the university adopted Estonian as the language of instruction instead of Russian and German. This involved the opening of new chairs, including the Chair of the Baltic Finnic Languages and the Chair of Folkloristics. Loorits specialised in Baltic Finnic languages and graduated with a master’s degree in 1923. Thereafter he started doctoral studies, while also changing his specialisation. In 1926, he presented his research on Livonian folk religion, for which he was awarded a doctoral degree in folkloristics. In 1927, he submitted the papers required for habilitation to the university and received the right to work as a lecturer at the university. From 1927 to 1942, he worked as an associate professor of folkloristics at the University of Tartu. In 1944, he left Estonia for Sweden. The article looks at the activities of Loorits at the University of Tartu in the period 1919–1942. As he received a scholarship from the university for both studies (1921–1923) and research (1923–1927), he had to present a report of his completed work to the university’s Faculty of Philosophy and to the university’s government at the end of each term. As he worked at the university at an hourly rate, he continued reporting until the Soviet power was established in Estonia in the summer of 1940. Besides factual information, his reports contain a remarkable amount of information on his personal development. These reports reflect Loorits’ keen eye for research problems and opportunities and reveal his great work ability and strict self-discipline. He was able to manage large research fields as he saw possibilities for organising them. He was a strict lecturer, although supportive of young researchers when they were successful. Loorits’ reports and the accompanying documents also provide an insight into the everyday life at the university of the 1920s–1930s. One can see that at the beginning of the period, the comparative method was predominant (this research method was represented by the professor of folkloristics Walter Anderson), and then the research methods based on the tradition group and presentation (Loorits) and the poetics of folklore (August Annist) were added. This was a period of significant advancement of research and science. While Loorits was able to see potential research perspectives and apply new research methods, his work was also theoretically innovative and shaped the future folklore research.

The election, education and ordination of future ministers has always been a responsibility of church officials, such as teachers, ministers, deans, respectively the assembly of the deanery. Teachers and ministers have also had the responsibility of identifying bright and talented students and church youth who can be directed to higher education to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for pastoral ministry. In addition to the usual biblical and theological subjects, they had to learn Latin grammar, dialectics and rhetoric, and after completing their secondary education, they had to consolidate what they had learned at university level. Young people applying for the ministry first had to acquire the necessary practical skills as assistant ministers under the guidance of ordinary ministers, and only then were they ordained as ordinary ministers in a congregation.

Over the past seven years, archaeological outreach activities and participatory research have increasingly been incorporated into different archaeological projects in Sudan while sites have faced growing threats from economic activities, mining, and climate change. To respond to such disciplinary shift and challenges in site protection, a training course on collaborative archaeology and heritage management planning was designed and offered to Sudanese archaeologists and students at Old Dongola in early 2021. This article assesses the course based on evaluations submitted by participants and the instructor’s self-reflection and observations. It explores an improved approach to capacity building in the two specialized fields in the context of Sudan, and concludes with the proposition that the approach and objectives of collaborative archaeology should be foregrounded in courses of this kind. Rather than just offering training per se, courses should be set up in collaboration with local communities and produce, by design, meaningful outcomes for communities, while training the participants.

To date, little is known about the short-term dynamics of perfectionism in undergraduate students, especially in certain potentially activating contexts, such as the proximity of the exam session. The aim of the present study was to address this methodological limitation and literature gap by conducting a latent growth curve model analysis of students’ perfectionistic concerns and strivings in the proximity of exams, to detect and explain the potential heterogeneity in their growth trajectories. The study sample consisted of 242 undergraduate students who participated at four-time points (228 at T0, 171 at T1, 225 at T2, and 146 at T3), spaced four weeks apart, between the beginning of the first academic semester and the beginning of the exam session. The results showed that while perfectionistic concerns displayed a significant overall growth trajectory during this period of time, perfectionistic strivings were rather stable personality traits, less dependent on contextual factors. Regarding the individual differences in perfectionism dimensions, the findings showed that there was a significant inter-individual variability around both the initial level and the overall growth trajectory of perfectionistic concerns. However, only the perceived teachers' expectations explained significantly part of the variations around the initial level of perfectionistic concerns.
